Ebb Tide: Sox-Royals Gamer II

All three AL East leaders faltered last night in games outside their division, with the Rays and Sox losing to the cellar teams of the central while the Yanks lost more than the game in Anaheim. Tonight, Josh Beckett looks for a victory in Kansas City. He’s been knocked around his last three times out, facing the powerhouse lineups of the Halos and Bombers. In his defense, the Sox mustered only four runs in those outings. It will be tough to make excuses tonight for the Boston bats if they don’t bash Brian Bannister to bolster Beckett; Bannister has given up one run per inning in his last seven starts.

Lineups follow, comment away.

  • Still not sure how I feel about having Drew leadoff. Good thing lineups don’t matter!

  • Good news guys: I’m here from the start, so I can’t come in mid-game and jinx things!
The announcers are already jinxing Beckett with “The Royals have never beaten Beckett.” Son of a bitch!

  • Relatedly, I’ve got a big soft spot for Bannister because he sees himself as a bridge between players and sabrmetric types. Joe Posnanski a great job covering him.

  • Wait, Lowell is back and Drew is still leading off? I really liked the Elf-Youk combo at the top!

  • Francona likes Youk hitting clean up for now, Ath.

  • Besides, with Pedroia hitting second, we’ll get to see the laser show anyway, right?

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 8:10 pm
  • That’s the point stuck, I want the laser show to be the main attraction! I don’t want to wait through Drew’s at-bat.
That article made me love Pedroia so much.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:11 pm
  • Drew singles to right field, it gets passed the fielder and Drew goes to 2nd. Obviously Tito knows more than I do.
Wow, scorekeepers rule it a double. I’m fine with that.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:12 pm
  • WHY THE FUCK IS PEDROIA SHOWING BUNT? We want the fricken laser show!
…unless it’s a distraction, which would make the laser show all the more exciting and lasery!

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:13 pm
  • Pedroia grounds out to the pitcher, Drew out in a run-down. Pedroia is fucking awesome though and makes it to 2nd. He’s sneaky!

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:14 pm
  • Cleveland up 3-1 over Tampa after 3. Somehow, Tampa’s lost all 5 games against them this season.

  • I would feel a lot better about Ortiz’s wrist if he got a delicious RBI here.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 8:16 pm
  • Announcers: “What does ‘walk-off’ mean? Does it refer to the losing team walking off the field, or the winning team walking off the field?”
It was coined by Eckerseley, and it means the losing team walks off the field. Idiots.
Ortiz grounds through the shift, Pedroia scores.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:16 pm
  • Thank you for obliging me, Papi.

  • HEY Ortiz was stealing 2nd! And he got a HUGE lead! Too bad Youk fouled it off.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:19 pm
  • Youk singles on an infield single, though it looked like the pitcher tagged 1st with his glove.
Replay shows Youk safe by 1/4 of a step.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 8:29 pm
  • Was at Pettitte’s last start in the Bronx, he gave up some absolute bombs. Maybe he’s aging right before our eyes. That would be far tastier than the Joba injury, which was, for me, a sad sight. I don’t necessarily feel that bad when an older rival declines, though it can be sad in theory. I do feel terrible when a young wunderkind gets injured. At the least, Pettitte has had a tremendous career, whereas Joba was just getting started. Certainly no tears for Pettitte if he’s going downhill.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:30 pm

  • Seriously, what happened to the calm, bored-because-it’s-too-easy Beckett that would mow down the likes of Kansas City?

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Tampa leading now.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • And now we reach the “noone can hear you scream in space” portion of our lineup. See you in a couple of innings.

  • Joba to visit Dr. James Andrews, and Cashman extremely non-committal about what might be wrong, quite understandably.

  • Varitek is REALLY good at striking out. It’s a shame that’s not the goal of baseball.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:41 pm
  • Tek angry about a call, but frankly he’s so bad at the plate how does he get off complaining about anything? I guess the only way he can get on is to walk…
    And he strikes out.
We’ll miss Tek when he’s gone, but he really isn’t a viable player with his bat anymore.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:43 pm
  • I stand by my comment last night that we should let our pitchers hit and DH for ‘Tek. Our pitchers can at least bunt runners over.
Wow that was a shitty little bloop hit. Second one tonight.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:45 pm
  • Leadoff single on a pitch well off the plate. Little looper to center, decent hitting there and bad luck for Beckett, it was a pitch that was either a squib or a foul ball or a ball.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:46 pm
  • Now Beckett quickly behind Buck 2-0.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:46 pm
  • FANTASTIC catch by Lowrie.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • If I remember correctly the Sox went to KC in 2006 and got swept, that was basically the beginning of the end that year. Or maybe it was in the middle of the end, I can’t remember.
Wow, what a play by Lowrie. Stay in bed, LFRS.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:48 pm
  • Yep, on August 8th, after losing two to the Rays, the Sox went to KC and were swept into a five game losing streak. They went 7-14 the rest of the month.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:50 pm
  • Deep fly ball advances the runner to third, now Beckett squeezed on a nice pitch on the inside corner, and he’s pissed.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • That should’ve been the inning, frankly. Now a foul ball does end it, Lowell catches one near the dugout. On to the third, still tied at 1.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Yep SF, we went into KC and got swept; 4-6, 4-5, 4-5. However we went on to sweep the Orioles at home after that, before dropping 2 of 3 to the Tigers. After that we played a 5-game series against the Yanks. Can’t remember how that one turned out.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:51 pm
  • Bah, way to beat me to the stats SF.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • Hahahaha they’re interviewing Rusty Kuntz, who has the greatest name in the history of sports. Yes, it’s better than Dick Pole.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:53 pm
  • Jacoby seeing more pitches lately, but his contact is generally atrocious. When was the last time he hit a ball solidly? Every single thing he puts into play is a grounder or a popup.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Or Dick Trickle, Nascar hack.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • When was the last time Ellsbury got a hit, much less an extra-base hit? Seems like ages.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 8:55 pm
  • Bannister gets the same pitch that Beckett didn’t last inning on Drew. I hate inconsistent strike zones. If the plate is wide, fine, but let it be wide for everyone.

  • I see we’re also on the same wave length, SF.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 8:56 pm

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:56 pm
  • Bannister already at 53 pitches with that walk. Up next, Gabbo.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • Drew walks.

    SF August 5, 2008, 8:57 pm
  • Ellsbury 3 for 4 against the Yanks on July 27, one of those was a double.
He has 7 XBH since June 16, with 2 SB. He hasn’t had a SB since July 1, over a month ago.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:58 pm
  • SF you asshole stop beating me to the punch with statistics!
LASER SHOW, Pedroia a few feet shy of a homer.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 8:58 pm
  • Ortiz hits a laser to right-field but it’s right at some dude with “KC” on his hat. What a dick.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:00 pm
  • Another rope by Papi, RIGHT AT THE RF. This luck is insanely bad, frustrating. I’d like to think that BABIP will right itself, we’ll certainly score if this keeps up, and a bunch, but logic and sanity don’t always rule.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • Beckett’s stuff is looking really nasty this inning.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:04 pm
  • Very strong inning from Beckett.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • Beckett strikes out the side. That was the best inning I’ve seen all season; he looked bored, lazy, because it was just so easy.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:08 pm
  • Andy Marte at the plate for Cleveland, flies out to center. Remember when it seemed like a big deal that the Sox traded him? Turns out that he and Coco are just about of equal (low) value after all.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 9:10 pm
  • Jason Bay! He misses a homer by a foot or two, but the double scores Lowell.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:12 pm
  • Another bomb from Bay, double scores Lowell.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Wow, announcers complaining about the HBP call, because it “hit Lowell’s jersey.” I guess they’ve already forgotten that the Royals had the same thing happen for them with the bases loaded last night.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • Bay to third on a wild pitch, not good technique from the catcher on that one.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:15 pm
  • More tough luck – Lowrie hits one quite hard, but right at the first baseman, Bay has to stay at third. Not the best situational hitting there. Now Tek is up to end the inning.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • SF, are you getting the Royals announcers on mlb.tv? These guys keep getting worse and worse.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Tek misses a hanger. Fouls it straight back. I think if he was told what pitch was coming he’d still struggle. Someone get that man a lighter bat.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:16 pm
  • Sound off, watching Mad Men DVD…

Tek’s game log. On June 21st he slid into the .230s, it’s been 40+ games since he cracked the .225 mark. Only four of the last 30+ days has he been at .220 or just above.

  • Liner to Ellsbury covering a lot of ground. That’s the upside of Jacoby in the field, his speed certainly took the edge off that inning.
    Time for more runs!

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • HEY, an infield single by Ellsbury! How about we f*cking steal 2nd?

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Does he go here? Been a long time since the last SB.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 5, 2008, 9:28 pm
  • Solid contact for Jacoby, right off of Bannister. The deflection allows Ellsbury to leg out a single.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:29 pm
  • Lowell hitting almost EXACTLY at his career averages:
    Career: .280, .344, .467
    2008 : .280, .342, .462

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:29 pm

Stuck posted this at the end of last night’s gamer. FANTASTIC article about Pedroia.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Bah, Papi does nothing useful, shallow popup. Runners stuck at 1/2.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • The specific quote I’m referring to is:
Day after day, in these pregame hours, Pedroia stirs the pot, dishing out threats and insults and mixing in bold predictions about his performance at the plate. He has already texted Millar, “Did you bring your glasses for the laser show tonight?”

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • Ha, Manny even calls Ped “crazy”. Isn’t that like Manson calling someone “a bit easily angered”?

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • JFC, another hard hit sinking liner and a good grab by the CF. The Sox have had absolutely terrible luck.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • I also love Millar’s response that Pedroia “has very little natural ability. When you think of the amount of swagger he’s got, at 5’3″, how can you not love a guy like that?”

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 9:41 pm
  • Exactly, SF. If Manny thinks someone’s crazy they REALLY must be crazy.
I’d like to be a fly on the wall in the dugout for a few games, just to hear Pedroia trash talk for 9 innings.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:42 pm
  • Another annoying inning. Par for the course these days. More hits, more LOB, only one run. The Sox should be up by three, maybe four runs right now. At least they are into the bullpen early. We should see more scoring on our side.

    SF August 5, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • I miss Millar.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:44 pm

Uhhh, Beckett doesn’t throw a slider.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 9:47 pm
  • Np SF, it makes me like Pedroia even more. It also means I’m going to scream “LASER SHOW” from now on whenever he gets a hit.

  • Woah woah woah how is that not a homerun?

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:17 pm
  • Two more baserunners.
What a crazy play…that ball ROLLED ALONG THE WALL for about six feet! Gload then pushed it back in the field, costing Bay a three run jack. Unreal!

    SF August 5, 2008, 10:18 pm
  • Bay AGAIN just misses a homer… Off glove, rolls along top of wall, “just” a double.

    Paul SF August 5, 2008, 10:18 pm
  • I don’t care what the rules are; that should be a homerun.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:19 pm
  • The centerfielder almost made the catch, in fact he probably should have. The ball then sat on top of the wall, actually rolling about six or seven feet towards left field. The top of the wall at KC is about 15″ deep, a ledge, and then Gload jumped and knocked it back in the park.
    6-1 Sox.

    SF August 5, 2008, 10:19 pm

    Paul SF August 5, 2008, 10:33 pm
  • course i say that and look, and he actually had great numbers. still, i recall some brutal three-pitch ks in key spots during games 4 and 5…

    Paul SF August 5, 2008, 10:35 pm
  • Is that sarcasm Paul? He batted .379 in the ALCS.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:36 pm

  • Beckett pulled, argues about it with Tito. He’s only at 90 pitches, and with a 7-run lead I would have left him out there.
Timlin in. He’s been really good lately, thankfully.

  • Theo on EEI today, saying Sox have lost 18 straight (I think it was 18. I was at work. It was a high number) 1-run road games.
He also refuted claims that Papi’s OPS is better when he’s batting ahead of Manny. He said the numbers are almost identical.

  • So here’s a dilemma for me: I’ve come home from work several times lately and noticed things moved around in my room, so I set my webcam up with motion-detection software that will record a 10-second video whenever it detects motion. Today, sure enough, my roommate’s girlfriend (who is a huge bitch) comes in my room, snoopes around my books, and gets on my computer for over an hour.
How should I handle the situation? My girlfriend and I already don’t get along with her because she acts like she lives here, and is generally as unfriendly as possible. Should I let it slide unless it happens again? Should I confront her calmly and cooly and give her a warning? Or should I get even with her by walking into their room when they’re having sex, and saying “Oh I’m sorry, you go in my room whenever you want so I figured I could do the same.”
It’s taken a lot of willpower to keep from confronting and screaming at her. Any ideas?

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:51 pm
  • Brian Bruney gives up a 3-run double. Sweet. Texas up 8-2. Man, I *never* would have expected the Yanks to lose two in Arlington.

  • Ath, it might be passive aggressive, but can you put a lock on your door?

    I'mBillMcNeal August 5, 2008, 10:52 pm
  • It’s an apartment, so I don’t think they’d let me replace the door lock. Unfortunately there’s not one on there now.
I’m trying to think of creative ways to get payback, rather than just yelling at her. Anyone have any good tricks up their sleeves?

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:54 pm
  • TO clarify: at this point I’m pissed off enough that I don’t just want her out of my room: I want revenge.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:55 pm
  • Texas leave MLB in runs scored at 640 (RS, Det tied at second wwith 560). Cubs only other team over 600 at 604.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 5, 2008, 10:55 pm
  • Texas has always been a fantastic offensive team… they just need some pitching.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 10:57 pm
  • That’s some pretty impressive ingenuity there, Ath, with the webcam set-up. I’d definitely just talk to her calmly and make it clear that she’s not allowed in your room. I’m not a big vengeance guy generally, but you definitely have to at least talk to her first before you go beyond that.
Also, put a password on your computer. Like I said, I don’t think revenge is a good idea, but it would be harmless enough to set up your computer with a message to her the next time she tries to use it. If she has any capacity to feel shame, that might activate it.

    stuck working August 5, 2008, 10:58 pm
  • As much as you want revenge, don’t do it. Lord only knows what you might pull that could injure her. You don’t want her to call the cops. So much shit is against the law these days.
My wife just read your tale of woe. She says, “She’s his guest so bring it up with him first.”

    I'mBillMcNeal August 5, 2008, 10:58 pm
  • Password on the computer is a good idea, too.

    I'mBillMcNeal August 5, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • To be fair the motion-detection software came with the camera, so I didn’t do anything special. It’s the “Creative Webcam Center” and it’s free, and I think it works with any camera (not just Creative ones). Check it out if you ever need some cheap home security.
I’ll let myself cool down before I make a decision I think… no use letting anger get the best of me. My girlfriend has been out of town for the last few weeks so maybe I’ll just let her kick her ass when she gets back.

    Atheose August 5, 2008, 11:02 pm
  • Jason Bay says, ”Oh, so Manny can get four hits with his new team? Well, so can I…”

    Paul SF August 5, 2008, 11:04 pm

    I'mBillMcNeal August 5, 2008, 11:05 pm
  • Wow Jason Bay is awesome… two doubles and two singles tonight.
Yeah, I went ahead and put a password on my computer as soon as I saw that things were amiss in my room. So at the very least they can’t screw with that anymore. And good point about the revenge Bill; she’s the type of person that would call the cops for something stupid.

  • From mlb.com:
Chamberlain underwent an MRI on his stiff right shoulder Tuesday in New York, but the Yankees did not immediately announce what that exam showed. The team revealed only that Chamberlain will travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday to receive a second opinion from renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
That’s unusual… if they’re not releasing the results of the first MRI it must be bad news.
