Enigma: Sox-Braves Gamer VI

I must confess I don’t know what to think about these Boston Red Sox.

First they wowed us with their seemingly invincible start, riding sterling pitching and surprisingly good offense to the league’s best record.

Then they shocked us with a shockingly sudden slump, keeping up the good pitching but failng to score with any consistency.

Now they seem to be rebounding, but they continue to mix wins and losses to the point where it’s unclear if they’re slowly working out of the slide or merely settling into a pattern of .500 baseball.

To top it off, the lineup seems unable to click at the same time. First Manny, Crisp and Lugo were cold, then Drew, Crisp and Lugo were cold, then Crisp, Lugo and Lowell were cold. Now it seems it’s back to Drew (worst batting performance in the game last night), Lugo and Lowell.

One guy who has not been cold is Julian Tavarez, who has been so good, it’s scary to think about considering him as a reliable part of this rotation. The problem is the Sox now need him to be reliable, thanks to Curt Schilling’s placement on the DL today. My fear is the moment he’s actually depended on is the moment he crumbles into the three-inning, six-run pitcher we kept expecting this past month or so.

Nevertheless, it’s him against Buddy Carlyle, whose 4.44 ERA in limited time this season belies an excellent .239 BAA and 1.19 WHIP. Seeing as how he’s a marginal pitcher whom the Red Sox have never seen, he’ll probably throw a perfect game. The Sox will try to avoid such a fate,  win the series — and maybe even return to 10 up on the Yankees –with a victory tonight.

  • So the team with the best record in baseball is an enigma because it isn’t playing .750 baseball at all times?
To quote my favorite show, “This is the least amount of power I’ve ever seen go to someone’s head.” :D

  • Yes yes, we all watch Office.. =P
On the flip side, the Sox are not holding their end of the collapse. C’mon, lose more already!

  • It just seems like it’s going to take .750 ball to beat the Yankees…

  • espns radar gun has buddy at 53 mph on the overhand 12-6 curveball. i can see that giving our guy’s trouble. fortunately his fastball has been flat and up. drew, manny, and pedrioa all smoked fastballs after getting ahead in counts.

  • Oh, thank you, Crisp. Thank you for clearing the bases so that shortstop dude didn’t up his LOB and end the inning on a complete downer.

  • How’s that IBB looking now, Braves?

  • I could use a game where the exact same thing as this 1st inning essentially happens every inning.
    Clean start for Senor Tavarez.

    Devine June 20, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • I don’t miss Willie Harris- he batted .156/.250/.200 for the Sox last year

  • he got his quota for hits for the game lol

  • ATLANTA – Interesting development.
J.D. Drew has been replaced in right field by Wily Mo Pena.
Drew homered and doubled in his first two AB’s.
Don’t know if this is because of an injury or because they’re resting Drew early up 7-0 in the second inning.
The Sox have not made an announcemnet yet. We’ll get it to you as soon as they do.

  • where’s SF? his boy coco has come alive.
I have been a Coco booster, so I am thrilled about this. I didn’t expect it, he really looked cooked, but man, it makes me happy.

  • drew removed from the game. wily mo in. drews starting to find a groove, so i guess it’s time to sit him. i’m all for calling off the dogs, but drew is one dog that could use some ab’s.

    sf rod June 20, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • LMAO they sent him back out for another inning!

    TJ June 20, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Drew must be hurt- it’s way to early to take him out for a rest.

    Ayuh - SF June 20, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • Uh-oh, with Drew. I can’t imagine yanking a player in the 2nd, even in a blowout. The game is too long and runs get scored. He’s gotta be hurt. Hopefully he just “felt something” and it’s precautionary. Ugh.

    SF June 20, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • I’m with you there, SF. Drew’s always been prone to nagging injuries, I don’t like that he’s out so early.

    Ayuh - SF June 20, 2007, 8:27 pm
  • tightness in his right quad is the early report. “precautionary” is the term being used.

    sf rod June 20, 2007, 8:32 pm

  • rain delay in toronto. don’t they have a roof?

    sf rod June 20, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Man, this is the team I signed up for. Knock on wood.
Rod, I didn’t see a rain delay, but I know if they think it’s going to pass right over, they don’t bother to close the roof.

    LocklandSF June 20, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Tavarez has yet another sterling inning in the 6th.

    Devine June 20, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • espn commentators are certain julian is back to doctoring the ball again. certain because julian has been taking the third out ball back to the dugout with him, as well as wipping his brow and touching his hat. thanks for that added insight guy’s.
ps…he left the ball on the mound after the 6th….and it’s humid…and he always goes to the cap. but go ahead and make something up, it’s a blowout.

    sf rod June 20, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Manny. First pitch.

    Devine June 20, 2007, 9:29 pm

    But then again, it’s Manny.

    LocklandSF June 20, 2007, 9:29 pm

    TJ June 20, 2007, 9:58 pm
  • Perfect AL vs. NL illustration tonight, AL dominating or have already won 8 games, 4 games 0-0, one tied, NL has won 2 and both were close.

    LocklandSF June 20, 2007, 10:10 pm
  • So far tonight the AL has scored 79 runs and NL has scored 39.

    LocklandSF June 20, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • Sosa hit #600 against Chicago Cubs

    TJ June 20, 2007, 10:32 pm
  • so far the AL leads 109 to 93 out of the possible 252 interleague games played. which says to me…thank god there’s only 50 more interleague games left.
