First Place is (Half) Ours for the Taking!: Sox-Twins Gamer III

Well, the Sox’ bats breathed new life into Brad Radke’s sagging career, after doing similar things for Jaret Wright and John Wasdin. Now they’ll try to work their magic on Carlos Silva (yes, that’s a 7 at the front of his ERA). The Yankees lost already today, so first place is back within reach. There’s no better time than now for our new-look team — goodbye, David Riske; hello, Javier Lopez — to realize that this collection of talent has no business winning just six times in 15 games.

  • Wakefield’s not getting the same corner Silva got…

  • I thought all that insanity about getting Mirabelli back was to avoid moments like this, no?

    yankeemonkey June 15, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • Don’t get me started on that… We lost Bard’s good bat and his youth to get Old Man Mirabelli’s better (but still not perfect) glove and nonexistent bat…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • 1-0 on the squeezed walk, passed ball and two groundouts…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 8:29 pm
  • One hit through two innings for the Sox. Not a single ball hit hard in the 2nd…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 8:34 pm
  • whoa whoa whoa, Mirabelli is far from nonexistant at the plate!

    airk June 15, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • … it just takes 30 games (6 Wakefield starts) for him to emerge from normal slumps.

    airk June 15, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Damn you, Kubel!

    airk June 15, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • lol, airk
Kubel HR makes it 2-0 Minnesota. What the crap?

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Wake’s pitching pretty well tonight. As usual, our offense (minus Loretta and Varitek tonight) is nowhere to be seen..

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • yeah, the good news is that the twins will probably not score another run in the next 5 innings.

    airk June 15, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • You guys would all agree that “minus Varitek” might not be a bad thing?

    walein June 15, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • wwell, yet another instance of me being flat-out wrong.

    airk June 15, 2006, 8:55 pm
  • Not likely, when the alternative is ‘Belli, Walein….

    yankeemonkey June 15, 2006, 8:55 pm
  • no, i don’t agree walein. Tek is picking up his average every day now. He’s just had bad luck so far this year — essentially a normal start minus any token hot streak. It happens.

    airk June 15, 2006, 8:57 pm
  • Also, Morgan just put it down on you guys!!!! Wakefield, right after Joe says that the “twins will do this to you, move people all around” Wakefield got a pitch out and they threw the guy out!

    walein June 15, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • Tek’s definitely been more of an asset than a burden over the past two weeks. Two out of the last three weeks, he’s led the team in BA. His average is roughly the same as Papi’s now…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 8:59 pm
  • 2nd passed ball for Mirabelli. No harm though, next pitch is the K.
    3-0 Minnesota :-\

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 9:02 pm
  • People at work are fighting me for control of the remote… Something about some championship series game or somesuch nonsense…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • Watch out Paul SF…Isolanationism is king!

    walein June 15, 2006, 9:09 pm
  • Crisp out on the first pitch…how do the coaches and Tito make him stop? I would love to see a stat comparing his pitches per ab when the bases are empty compared to p/ab with men on.

    Tom sf June 15, 2006, 9:11 pm
  • Well this game is zipping along nicely…

    yankeemonkey June 15, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • Wow, Coco is hitting .194 with runners on base. Only 36 at-bats, so there’s some sample size issues, but wow…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • I am in Sox Detox. Back in a day or two or so. I need a break. Enjoy.

    SF June 15, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • WTF?! I have Wake throwing today in my fantasy league. This is probably one of the few times I’m rooting along w/you guys.

    bloodyank78 June 15, 2006, 9:29 pm
  • this game has the feel of one where Wakefield pitches a complete game, giving up 4 runs, yet the Sox still lose.

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • Not the offense though, just Wake.

    bloodyank78 June 15, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • Now 4-0. I’m not even watching anymore, and I still feel suckerpunched. What happened to this team over the last two weeks?

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 9:31 pm
  • They spent too much time hanging with the Yanks ;-)

    yankeemonkey June 15, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • This is Bullshit! Ortiz smokes a home run that hits off a speaker dangling from the roof, and it’s a single.
Remy is right. The Metrodome is a joke. These games shouldn’t count, says I!

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • When the Twins come to Fenway, an enormous plane (not an airplane, mind you) should be held, via crane, over right field.

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • 63 pitches for Silva through 6.

    yankeemonkey June 15, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • you have to like that its 4-0 twins, but you can still hear the sox fans chear Trot’s single.

    mattymatty June 15, 2006, 9:48 pm
  • Remy mentions that Silva has thrown first-pitch strikes to 19 out of 23 batters. Impressive.

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • This injury is horsepoo. The Sox are going to win this game, I’m telling you.

    mattymatty June 15, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • hmmm

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • The Twins need to lose the pinstripes and adopt a Sox-esque home jersey. I feel strongly about this.

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • Their “TC” hat is aces, I must say.

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Tavarez warming up…..

    airk June 15, 2006, 9:55 pm
  • Men on base, Crisp out on the first pitch AGAIN. Learn from your mistakes, Coco.

    Tom sf June 15, 2006, 9:57 pm
  • That was impressive. Two singles, then two shots to drive them in and both guys screw it up. Coco got a first pitch fastball he should have driven, but he popped it up. Mirabelli got a hanging curveball he should have hit out but couldn’t wait quite long enough to do so. In short: ARG!

    mattymatty June 15, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • yeah, Covelli is over-anxious

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • Tavarez pitching — someone just hold the chloroform over my mouth, please.

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • Francona just couldn’t wait to get This Guy (you know who I’m talking about) into the game, huh.

    mattymatty June 15, 2006, 10:04 pm
  • He’ll strike oth the side three straight innings, now that there’s no pressure, thus ensuring a spot in a high-pressure situation where he’ll choke…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:05 pm
  • Not quite, but what was that? Three outs on eight pitches?

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • Youk starts the rally!

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • Wow, E-3 loads the bases… Makings of a big inning here,…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:17 pm
  • Let’s go Manny!

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:19 pm
  • Manny K’s w/ sacks packed….

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:23 pm
  • … until Manny strikes out…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • argh….Trot, not what we needed…

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • Lowell comes through in the clutch! 4-2 Twins.

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • Hope lives on! Lowell single makes it 4-2…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • Coco loads em up again! This is more like it…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • Tek, first pitch swinging……

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • leaving three stranded…..and swinging on the first pitch…you are KILLING me tek…KILLING me

    TheTree1918 June 15, 2006, 10:31 pm
  • Tek fouls out on the first pitch… I’d be pissed, but I doubt Mirabelli would have done better…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:31 pm
  • and in a PINCH HIT situation!!! WTF!

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • Now that its only two runs, I wonder if we’ll see Tavarez blow up…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:34 pm
  • Right on cue, the base hit…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:35 pm
  • In comes Javier Lopez, so I guess we’ll see early what the kid’s got…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:36 pm
  • Walk on four pitches, none of them close… This sounds familiar…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • Lopez issues a walk on 4 pitches. ummmmm

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • Bleck, base hit, and we get an out thanks to Morneau’s greediness…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:40 pm
  • And the double play. No ER from him, just Tavarez’s on 1st.
I gotta take optimism out of this where I can, right?

    Anonymous June 15, 2006, 10:42 pm
  • Then the DP… So not too too bad. But not good either…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:42 pm
  • That was me.

    Devine June 15, 2006, 10:42 pm
  • Last chance for the bats… We’ll have some good hitters in this inning…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:43 pm
  • Blech.

    Devine June 15, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • Alex Cora is our last chance…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • At worst, Cora will go down fighting.

    Devine June 15, 2006, 10:49 pm
  • Cora keeps it goin!

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:50 pm
  • A breath, but still quite a-ways to go.

    Devine June 15, 2006, 10:50 pm
  • He’s really done a good job for us. Would it be so terrible to start him at short more often? He’s sure-handed on defense…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:51 pm
  • It’s up to Manny Ramirez.

    Devine June 15, 2006, 10:54 pm
  • Papi RBI!!! Don’t give up!

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:54 pm
  • Yah Papi! Still clutch…

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:54 pm
  • Aww, Manny!! :-(

    Paul SF June 15, 2006, 10:57 pm
  • K. twins swwep Sox for first time since ’94.

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:58 pm
  • *sweep

    airk June 15, 2006, 10:58 pm
  • Oooof, nice gut punch at the end there. Ick.

    Devine June 15, 2006, 10:58 pm
  • What a lousy stretch. The only thing I can think to say is I’m glad they’re getting it out of the way now…
Sure am glad we got Javier Lopez though. Really turned this game around :-P
