Beckett is appealing the suspension, so hopefully he can get it lowered to 3-4 games. If so they might be able to schedule it so he doesn’t miss a start at all.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 9:39 pm
Joe C sez Papi’s ground-ball out would have been a DP in a normal defensive alignment.
It would have, Bill. When Nomar went to his left to field the ball there wasn’t anyone there to cover 2nd.
Because of that Youk gets an RBI single. Let’s see if we can keep this lead for once.
Damn, who will win batter of the week in the AL? Swisher, Longoria or Youk?
AndrewYFApril 14, 2009, 10:18 pm
Bay walks and then Lowell singles in another run. Our offense has needed a game like this to raise their confidence.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 10:22 pm
Bay walks, Lowell singles in another run. Action in the Oakland bullpen. If Eveland survives this, he’s at 33 pitches, who get to 50 pitches first, him or Dice-K?
Even when the Sox have a good inning they still manage to strand the maximum possible number of runners.
Let’s go Daisuke.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 10:27 pm
Dice-K’s fastball is hovering around 88. That’s Igawa-speed. Is he injured, or is this his way of trying to get some measure of control over his fastball?
AndrewYFApril 14, 2009, 10:36 pm
How the hell’d Ellsbury miss that? Coco woulda had it.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 10:38 pm
If it’s him trying to get control of his fastball he’s failing miserably, Andrew.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 10:38 pm
Cust with a broken bat single. I swear the Sox have had more cheap hits against them in the past week than they’ve had in the last two years.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 10:40 pm
Didn’t you just know that after scoring three in the first, Matsuzaka would turn right around and give it all back?
Man, this sucks. Where the hell did our starting pitching go?
The Red Sox could play 500% better baseball and they’d still suck dogballs.
This is shaping up to be a really long season. Small samples keep getting bigger, every day.
Buchholz in his first start the other day: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 2.45 ERA.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 10:52 pm
Does Ellsbury really suck this bad? I’ve read his projections and they seem pretty optimistic, but I don’t see it. He can’t hit an inside pitch to save his life.
I wish Gerb would get our predictaroo up and running, we wrote them a good ten days ago and I would be looking awfully prescient right now w/r/t the Sox.
Youk made it back to the bag in time, but he tripped and fell off, and Giambi then tagged him. Youk then ran his mouth off to the base coach, for reasons unknown.
Wow, this team is bloody pathetic. Bay hits a double, but waits about 3 seconds before running because he thought it was going to go foul. The right fielder dove and missed it and it rolled to the wall, but Bay only got to 2nd on it since he didn’t run out of the box.
I think Ellsbury is what I worry most about, long-term. It’s too bad, it’s a (possibly) thunderous 2-6 in the lineup. Speaking of 2-6, that might be the Red Sox’ record soon.
DevineApril 14, 2009, 11:37 pm
This team is a trainwreck right now. Who’s our ace again — Penny?
That interview with Beckett was hilarious:
“Soscia said I wasn’t remorseful enough,” said Beckett. “What should I have done, gone up and given him a hug after the benches cleared? I wasn’t in a hugging mood.”
WHAT THE FUCK DREW? Lazily fields the ball and it goes right under his glove. Horrible.
AtheoseApril 14, 2009, 11:41 pm
Masterson works out of a jam. Well, that’s something. This team needs a win badly tonight.
The Red Sox offense: 3rd fewest runs scored, 7th worst batting average, 7th worst OBP.
The Red Sox pitching: 9th worst ERA, 7th most HR given up, 3rd most HBP
By the way, I hate and have always hated these late West Coast games… And anecdotally, I feel like the Sox always do worse in games starting after 10 pm EST. Probably impossible to check that.
Ellsbury! A line drive hit! Right up the middle. Nice. 2 out, he should try to steal, fo’ sho.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 12:57 am
Didn’t happen, great play by Ellis on the foul pop-up. Can the bullpen continue to hold, hold, hold?
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:00 am
Inauspicious start: Buck BB by RR.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:03 am
Slightly more auspicious follow-up: K (Ellis helped him with two crap bunt attempts, though).
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:07 am
DP! Can we get a run?!
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:10 am
Nope!
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:23 am
Ortiz pops up on 2-0 with the bases loaded and 2 down. What an effing bummer.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:43 am
Nine innings of scoreless ball from the pen.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 1:53 am
Ten innings.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:10 am
Giambi, Holliday, Cust due up. Lopez about to pitch, I think. That sounds like a recipe for Game Over.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:17 am
Bottom of the 12th. Sheesh I need a drink.
rootbeerfloatApril 15, 2009, 2:18 am
Lopez can’t find the strike zone. He’s at 2-0 on the batter after walking two guys already (one out).
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:27 am
3-0, then 3-1…walked him. 1 out, bases loaded on balls. Just go ahead and walk him or hit him, Lopez. Make the shame complete.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:28 am
Hey rbf, nice to see ya.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:29 am
The K! Still fighting. I’m dying here.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:30 am
Game ends on a high chopper Pedroia can’t quite get to first in time. What a backbreaker. Matsuzaka has really fucked up his first two starts royally to join Lester. This game blew.
DevineApril 15, 2009, 2:33 am
The Sox season is slowly turning into a nightmare.
SoxFanApril 15, 2009, 3:05 am
Wow, glad I went to bed at 12:30. And now our entire bullpen is worn out, with Wake on the mound today. Good thing we have an off day tomorrow.
Beckett is appealing the suspension, so hopefully he can get it lowered to 3-4 games. If so they might be able to schedule it so he doesn’t miss a start at all.
Joe C sez Papi’s ground-ball out would have been a DP in a normal defensive alignment.
Youk drives in Pedro with the game’s first run. Youk now batting .536.
Wait, a lead?!?!
It would have, Bill. When Nomar went to his left to field the ball there wasn’t anyone there to cover 2nd.
Because of that Youk gets an RBI single. Let’s see if we can keep this lead for once.
Nancy w/RBI double to left. 2-0.
Drew doubles in another run!
That’s two two-out RBIs.
Damn, who will win batter of the week in the AL? Swisher, Longoria or Youk?
Bay walks and then Lowell singles in another run. Our offense has needed a game like this to raise their confidence.
Bay walks, Lowell singles in another run. Action in the Oakland bullpen. If Eveland survives this, he’s at 33 pitches, who get to 50 pitches first, him or Dice-K?
Tek walks to load ’em. Green up.
Batting around in the first. I like it!
Let’s get more than 3 here.
Borderline strike on strike 2, Green then Ks on the 40th pitch.
Even when the Sox have a good inning they still manage to strand the maximum possible number of runners.
Let’s go Daisuke.

Man, this sucks. Where the hell did our starting pitching go?
And there’s only one frigg’n out.
Daisuke looks so lost out there now. Something isn’t right.
Wait, where’s the lead?
Only 350+ days until Opening Day, 2010!
Daisuke’s fastball has been around 86. What the fuck? 4-3 now.
This is a damn embarrassment.
5-3 on a grounder that Lowell can’t field.
5-3. Pardon me while I go punch my couch.
Does Ellsbury really suck this bad? I’ve read his projections and they seem pretty optimistic, but I don’t see it. He can’t hit an inside pitch to save his life.
Masterson is warming up hard, I think he’s going to start the 2nd inning. Daisuke looked injured out there.
Looks like Matsuzaka is done. I almost hope he is hurt because if he isn’t he/we are in trouble.
Ortiz displays his warning track power.
Dice-K’s done.
Remy and Orsillo confirming it, Daisuke is out. Remy said Daisuke was grabbing his leg earlier.
WTP from Ortiz.
One thing that has gone unnoticed is how great Green’s defense is. He has really impressed me so far this season.
Nomie’s gone with a leg injury, too.
Nomar leaves the games due to tightness in the calf. Ahhh, some things never change.
Anyone else thinking Ortiz should be fitted for a gold watch?
I wish Gerb would get our predictaroo up and running, we wrote them a good ten days ago and I would be looking awfully prescient right now w/r/t the Sox.
Hey Youk, shut your mouth and go sit down. He falls off the bag and then yells at the Boston first base coach.
What the hell happened on that alleged double play?
And the Cs beat Philly by 2. Yech.
Youk made it back to the bag in time, but he tripped and fell off, and Giambi then tagged him. Youk then ran his mouth off to the base coach, for reasons unknown.

Who wants a beer?
All six retired by Masterson.
Um, offense?
That was the worst bottom of the 1st ever.
Welcome to the party, Devine. Grab the complimentary gut-punch at the door.
Ellsbury SB.
Pedro?
Thanks, Ath. It hurts! It all hurts!
Pedro out, 4-3. This is craptastic.
Eveland needs 40 pitches to end the 1st. Somehow makes it through the fourth.
This makes me sad.
I think Ellsbury is what I worry most about, long-term. It’s too bad, it’s a (possibly) thunderous 2-6 in the lineup. Speaking of 2-6, that might be the Red Sox’ record soon.

Masterson works out of a jam. Well, that’s something. This team needs a win badly tonight.
It sure feels like Ortiz will never homer again.
Youk getting aggressive on the bases trying to make something happen with one out.
“Who’s our ace again — Penny?”
What’s Tiant doing these days?
Youk is the only one on the team playing 100%. Way to leg it out to 3rd.
I’m conditioned so far this season to think this attempted rally will fail. Come on, Bay!
Not what I intended, but a run’s a run.
Finally, a break. Game tied.
Eveland is done. Can’t believe he made it this far.
Yeah! Lowell! That was a bullet off the 3B.
The Red Sox offense: 3rd fewest runs scored, 7th worst batting average, 7th worst OBP.
The Red Sox pitching: 9th worst ERA, 7th most HR given up, 3rd most HBP
The offense comes alive! Tie game!
E cheater.
Bay a chance to be a hero.
Bailey BB to Bay.
2 on 2 out, Lowell up.
Lowell pops out.
So much for that.
By the way, I hate and have always hated these late West Coast games… And anecdotally, I feel like the Sox always do worse in games starting after 10 pm EST. Probably impossible to check that.
Valiant fight by the bullpen.
Ellsbury! A line drive hit! Right up the middle. Nice. 2 out, he should try to steal, fo’ sho.
