Hey, look, the Sox are playing! Kason Gabbard tries to stay undefeated this season against the vaunted Tiger offense, which showed us why we should not be trusting in Julian Tavarez any more than a fifth starter deserves the rest of the season.
Buehrle… Buehrle… Buehrle…
Comment away!
Papi with a homer in the bottom of the 1st that followed a Pedroia triple.
Ramirez walks, Drew singles.
Lowell K’d and Tek K’d to end the inning. I think stranding Manny and Drew could potentially by devastating for us tonight.
Detroit goes down 1-2-3 in the Top of the 1st.
Hinske goes down swinging.
After making Bonderman work in the 1st inning, the Sox hitters go on a “the fewer the pitches we see the better” type of inning. Bonderman throws 9 pitchs to include a 3 pitch strikeout to Coco.
Ordonez singles to left to lead off the 2nd.
Guillen lines out to right.
Pudge lines into the double play. Inning over.
Pedroia grounds out to 3rd.
Papi walks after falling behind 0-2.
Ramirez then promptly takes the first pitch and hits into an inning ending double play. Again letting Bonderman throw minimal amount of pitches.
Thames grounds out to third and Monroe K’s looking.
Inning ends as Inge strikes out swinging.
Drew pops out to short.
Lowell grounds to short, Guillen with an error allows Lowell to reach safely.
Tek strikes out and Lowell gunned down stealing. It would appear that the ole hit and run did not go according to plan.
Uh-oh, the wheels seem to be coming off the Gabbard bus in the bottom of the fifth… Two walks to first two batters. He’s been great up ’til now.
iRod grounds out, but the runners move over to 2nd and 3rd… Just one gone.
Now Thames makes a harmless out (pop to Hinske), 2 away…
Gabbard does seem to have worked himself into apickle this inning.
Ugh, trouble not avoided as a Monroe double ties it up.
Two friggin walks that come back to hurt him. The Sox bats need to start doing something. Bonderman should have a higher pitch count than what he has.
Another extra base hit tonight for Papi.
Now if only Manny would do something.
Papi doubles to lead off the sixth… The Big Man is back on form, today at least.
Long fly-out to center puts Tiz on third with one out…
Well at least Manny moved Ortiz to third.
Drew K’s
Lowell fouls out to 1st. Ortiz on third with one out and we starnd him.
it’s funny how much a single game off can revitalize a player. these have been the best swings papi has made since may.
I really am wondering/questioning why Papa Jack was fired after last year. The hitting this year just seems weak from when he was here.
I keepo reading it was cause he wasnt helping all the hitters and they wanted someone who spent more time watching video
Tek leads off with a single
I know the Sox are big on video, but Mags just doesn’t have the bats going like PJ did.
Some hitters just can’t be helped either.
Hinske hits into the DP.
Cora grounds out to 1st. Inning over, leadoff single wasted.
MDC in to pitch. Gabbard gives up a single and Tito goes and gets him out of the game.
Really a shame for Gabbrd, 2 hits the Tigers and all we can manage is two runs to help the kid out.
Guillen steals second.
MDC gets out of the inning with the score still tied.
Bonderman at 96 pitches. He should have a real short leash if he comes back out.
There’s little more frustrating than watching someone swing at a pitch, and then watching that person swing at the very next, exact same pitch, to strike out.
Wily Mo does it all the time with low-and-away breaking balls, and Drew just did it on two consecutive sliders in the dirt.
Polanco is hurt??? Give Pedroia his roster spot :)
This is just frustrating, no situational hitting on the team at all.
Oki gives up the walk to Ordonez
Guillen grounds out. Extra innings we go.
Crisp then Lugo followed by Papi.
leadoff double for Crisp.
Crisp with a leadoff double.
The question of the night, do we sac bunt him to third with Lugo?
The Yanks made the mistake earlier today of not doing it and it cost them the game.
Crisp in to third on Lugo’s ground out to short.
Intential pass to Papi. Manny please, make them pay.
For the second time tonight, Manny takes the first pitch and grounds into an inning ending double play.
Mags really has this team hitting the ball real well.
A runner stranded on third with one out..AGAIN.
Pudge leads off the inning with a single.
Thames singles, Pudge to second.
This got ugly
Monroe sacs, Pudge to third, Thames to 2nd.
Note to Sox: This is how you win a game by advancing runners.
Now we are going to IBB Inge to get to Granderson. I think Granderson hit a GS yesterday.
Tito checking out the book “Managers guide for idiots” today.
Granderson grounds to first, Sox take the force out at home.
2 down
“Note to Sox: This is how you win a game by advancing runners”
Now I look like an ass as Infante flies out to center. Massive tip of the cap to Oki who pitched himself into trouble and out of trouble.
that was a heart attack inning….Oki dun do that to me again lol
Drew flies out, Lowell grounds out, Tek singles and then Bailey PHs for Hinske and he grounds out.
Timlin in to pitch.
I assume we are saving Paps for IF we get ahead? I predict this ends badly
Pinchrunning for Pedroia was also a bad call
I guess Timlin walking Thames on four pitches was a good idea.
Nice single by Cora to lead off the twelfth.
There has been so many insane moves this game it is not funny.
Manny has killed us all night with his inability to do anything after Papi has been walked.
Seven Tigers join on the mound when Leyland visits to ask Miner, “why did you duck like a wuss when it was 30 feet away from you?”
Wow.. Crisp almost beat that bunt out when Infante covered for Miner. Lightning fast.
Crisp bunts Cora over to 2nd, one gone.
Funny how this game mirrors the earlier Yankees game.
If the Sox pull off this win that’s a big win, holding one of the better teams to just two runs through 12 with the defacto 6th starter beginning the game? Pretty damn good.
Ouch. Lugo can’t bitch there; gotta defend.
I predict a three run shot.
I swear to GOD Manny…
An IBB to Papi to get to Manny… says it all.
Hope they pay for it, but I expect it’ll work out for Detroit.
Miner pitches he is throwing with a wedgie.
Bases loaded to Drew.
… like he is…
He walks Manny. Huh.
I will do ANYTHING for a run, Drew
According to the Tigers’ announcers, Manny is tied for the most game-winning RBIs in the majors… Surprising.
I would have made Manny hit, as sorry as his a** has been tonight.
“According to the Tigers’ announcers, Manny is tied for the most game-winning RBIs in the majors… Surprising”
More surprising, Manny only has 7 more RBI’s than Lugo who is hitting .190
Youk PHing for Drew?
You have got to be kidding me. Now we strand the bases loaded?
Fly out, Sox squander the chance.
When your team leaves so many runners on in extra innings, it feels like a near-certain death sentence… Not hopeful for the bottom of the 12th.
I give up.
Well that didn’t work, though I like the idea. I’d take Youk’s ability to make contact over Drew in that situation.
That was a nifty play by Lowell.
Lotsa free baseball today.
WMP in right field…they are trying to make me have a tourette’s meltdown.
You’re right AG…4 or 5 extra inning games today.
Tek with a weak looking swing there on strike 3
I have only one question:
WHY DO YOU BUNT CRISP, ONE OF THE FEW GUYS WHO HAS GOTTEN A HIT, WITH JULIO LUGO COMING TO BAT!? WHY!?!??!
And Gerb: Drew has been as good, if not better, than Youk for the last 45 days. Questionable move. Also, is Paps available?
That is all.
SF: A) yes, Paps is coming on, and,
B) You really like Drew over Youk in that situation? i’m surprised.
Paps in and immediately plunks Sheffield.
Damn Sheff gets hit, _a lot_.
pap hits sheff to lead off the bottom of the 13th.
Snyder only RP left in the Pen. Wake down there warming up.
it must be Sheffs magnetic personality.
All I can say is:
Thank God the Yankees and Blue Jays already lost and also, Thank God it’s the All-Star break. Rest is needed, on all fronts.
Oh, and any other Sox fans worried about Manny yet? Isn’t it getting late for Manny to get it into gear, as everyone has saying is inevitable? Count me concerned.
> Count me concerned
If I were a Sox fan, I’d be concerned too, if the Sox really needed him, but right now, they don’t.
SF, I have something that might interest you and your fellow soxers, but I’d like to run it by you first. Is there somewhere (other than this game thread) that I can submit something?
yanksfansoxfan at hotmail dot com
I thought that strike three looked away, but there’s no way Guillen should be taking that pitch in that situation.
Ball game as IRod singles to right center. Ouch. 13 is not a lucky number of innings for the Yanks or the Sox tonight.
thanks… sending shortly.
Yuck…
Manny who is a DP machine and as a team 1-12 tonight with RISP.
Miserable performance by both offenses–especially Boston’s–and Papelbon ought to be embarrassed for giving up anything to a guy with a sub-300 OBP. Pathetic.
And I’ve been worried about Manny since May. But it’s weird, because even though I feel like he’s been truly abysmal this year…his splits don’t really bear that out. He was awful in April, this is true…but his OPS in May, June, and July (before today’s game) is in the mid-900’s. Factor out April, and his season is actually pretty similar to what he did in 2005, but with a lower SLG and higher OBP. Still qualifies as a down-year by his standards, but not a disaster. But yeah, given his spot in the lineup and the fact that he’s put up a truly pathetic .256/.333/.397 against righties, and I’m fairly concerned. (He’s at .380/.520/.684 against lefties, which is as ridiculous as his line against righties is bad.)
Still enough there to expect something of a bounceback though…at least I think there is. His GB%, LD% and BABIP are within their typical range, and he’s not striking out more then usual…he’s just not hitting the ball out of the ballpark as often. Part of that is age, but the more I look at the numbers the more I think he’s pretty likely to bounce back a bit. Over his career, he’s basically been as good against lefties as righties…those lines should normalize a bit.
Oh…I consider Ivan Rodriguez a truly awful offensive player. He’s actually been substantially worse then Varitek with the bat this year, nevermind Posada…it’s a travesty that he gets to start the AS game.
I was just watching the game on mlb.com the Tigers announcer said of the “diminutive second baseman”… “he’s tough to strikeout, but with that slider that Bonderman features, we may see Mr Pedroia punch out a couple times today”
One word……
IDIOTS
whoop de doo
what an awful way to end such a long drawn out game that the sox should have won…it never should have even gone into extra innings
