Get By With A Little Help: Royals-Sox Gamer III

The Red Sox face off against the Jays with Julian Tavarez hopefully (not) remembering he is pitching to one of the worst teams in baseball. Odalis Perez is on the bump for the Royals. Line-ups in the extended. JD leading off? Hmm. Comment away..

  • Manny makes a great catch on Dejesus to start out the game.. Looks like he’s finally playing deeper tonight.

  • Obviously Perez has us befuddled tonight.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • DPed with a two-out double in the bottom of the third…

    Hudson July 18, 2007, 7:52 pm
  • Ortiz strands him. This could be a quick game for both sides, at this rate.

    Hudson July 18, 2007, 7:57 pm
  • Tavarez in trouble. 1st and 2nd w/no outs.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • It’s about that time when the wheels to come off Julian Tavarez, and sure enough KC starts the inning with two singles.

    Hudson July 18, 2007, 8:00 pm
  • Groundout moves the KC runners to 2nd and 3rd.

    Hudson July 18, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • This is getting old. Lester should be close enough for us to move him up to the big club and put Tavarez back in the pen.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • Sac fly, 1-0 KC

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:04 pm
  • Gordaon singles, another run scores. 2-0

  • oh, my head hurts

    rootbeerfloat July 18, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Brown singles. 1st and 2nd. For the love of god, can Tavarez pitch in a game without completely coming unglued?

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:06 pm
  • KC is slapping us around and taking our lunch money.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:07 pm
  • We have Manny on 2nd and Youk on 1st with no outs.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:15 pm
  • These are the Royals, correct? Can we do more than ‘threaten’ Don?

  • Bases loaded after Lowell singles.

  • Tek grounds into a FC at short. Ramirez scores, Lowell out at 2nd.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Crisp walks, bases loaded AGAIN for Lugo.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Lugo jumps on the first pitch with a double to left that scores Youk and Tek.
Finally, someone that delivers a clutch hit with RISP.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:24 pm
  • Drew sith a sac fly that scores Crisp.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • 4-2! Shoot, if that’s the final score I’ll be a happy girl.

  • so will, I NSTB- and I’m a guy

    Anonymous July 18, 2007, 8:28 pm
  • Pedroia grounds out to end the inning. We manage to plate 4 runs. Not bad, but considering that we had the bases loaded twice that inning you should expect more.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:30 pm
  • “4-2! Shoot, if that’s the final score I’ll be a happy girl”
NSTB…remember we have TAVAREZ on the mound.
I just hope that the Sox did not spend themselves completely that inning.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:31 pm
  • And Tavarez manages to give back a run already.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Teahan safe with another LowEll error. Just seems like we try to find a way to throw games away.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • please doubleplay, please.

no sleep til brooklyn SF July 18, 2007, 8:39 pm
  • Tavarez gives up a double to Butler that scores Grudz and Teahan. KC is back out in front again 5-4.
Tavarez seems to miss the plate completely with his pitches or leaves them hanging over the plate so scrubs can raise thier BA’s. Again I have to wonder why he is still starting games. Lester should be ready by now.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:41 pm
  • Shocking development…Timlin is up in the pen. I guess that Tito finally figured out that Leather Face is in trouble out there.
If you are getting slapped around by the bottom of the AL you should not be in the starting rotation.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:43 pm
  • I’m going to vomit. I hope the bats have many more runs in them.

no sleep til brooklyn SF July 18, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • Gordon’s .240 hitting knocks another run in. KC has scored 4 runs this inning… &*%^&*NH pathetic.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • KC sent 7 batters to the plate last inning, they are at 8 right now.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:46 pm
  • Timlin relieves Tavarez. Someone needs to smack the cooler of Tavarez’s head in the dugout. Better yet, punch somehting down there and break your hand again.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • Hold the line at 6 runs and hopefully we can make up 3 runs in the next 5 innings.

no sleep til brooklyn SF July 18, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • I made a mistake last night. I said that the Sox had two players who were barely of major league quality on their roster. I should have said three.
If the Sox trot Tavarez out for another start in five days then Theo Epstein has some serious questions to answer. In fact, he already has questions to answer, in my opinion.
This was a good team turned into a mediocre team that is now turning into a flat-out bad team.

    SF July 18, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • We manage to catch a guy stealing. Tek must have felt that was necessary giving the ability of pitchers to actually get outs.
Dead on SF, three people who do not even belong in a T-ball league.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Manny homers, someone is atleast trying to make up for this crap.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • Wow, so I just read the game summary and see that Tito allowed Tavarez to face FOURTEEN guys in 1.1 innings between the fourth and fifth before pulling him.
Did Tito catch Torre’s narcolepsy? That’s jus incompetent, considering Tavarez’ recent struggles and his difficulties the second and third times through orders..

    SF July 18, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Youk grounds out, Lowell grounds out.
Inning over. Youk seems to have done nothing lately.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • Well…Manny’s hit three homers in six games…that’s cool, right?

    Devine July 18, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Riske up in the pen for KC.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Youk is 7 for his last 38, Rob. He hasn’t done anything lately.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • I’d say a clean inning here is not just needed, but mandatory.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Youk: four RBI in his last 10 games. He’s been crap.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:03 pm
  • Yes SF, 14. Not sure what the mindset was, but this isn’t s September call up out of the race where you decide to leave the kid in for some “seasoning.”
It isn’t just Torre and Tito. I went to see the Kinstin Indians Monday night and watched the Indians manager leave a pitcher in the top of the ninth who promptly walked the bases loaded with no outs, before pulling him for the closer. Must be a special bottled water for Managers.
    Kinston is where Tavarez started..btw.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • More Youk (thanks, Baseball Reference) –
    Last 28 days: .231, 12 for 52 with 11 RBI
Late and Close for the season: .171. This is a big black mark for such a solid hitter.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • “Well…Manny’s hit three homers in six games…that’s cool, right?”
Under the same guidelines that we judged ARod on last year, HRs in losses mean nothing (personal stat padding). Manny needs to have quite a few more of those in some wins to start to overshadow that poor start to the season.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Now utter ugliness is the Jays tonight. They have managed almost two base runners an inning and only scored 1 run.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • Holy Crap…a 1,2,3 inning for us.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:08 pm
  • .171? Moneyball is full of shit.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • I know that the whole “I could manage better than that guy” claim is ludicrous – we can’t. It’s the baseball version of someone looking at a Pollock or a Rothko and saying “my kid could do that”. It’s kind of insulting.
But I don’t understand the moments where failures are glaringly obvious, where struggles are evident in real time, where patterns that have manifest themselves are repeating, where clearly poor statistical matchups are posed despite the facts being available. Tito leaving JT out there for that many guys despite utter futility is beyond explanation. There’s not a chance I’d be 1/50th the manager that Tito is, but I don’t get how things like what just happened occurred while a guy who is immersed in baseball (and surrounded by guys immeresed in baseball and on a successful and relatively smartly run team) watches idly.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Here comes the 12 outs in easy succession, and heads banging against walls.
    There’s one.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • There’s two. 10 to go, guys.
You can do it. Ruin our year in July and early August. Please. I can save a lot of time not having to blog in September, do something much more productive for society.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:13 pm
  • I agree. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see that your pitcher is playing the stunt double of Tina Turner out there and evry batter is Ike. I wonder what is going through these guys heads when this is happening. I am sure they are concerned with the bullpen and all, but where do you stop the bleeding and still give yourself a chance to win the game?

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Nine to go. The deathly silence of our bats is so utterly predictable.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Oh, and it’s a one run game now, so we’re dead meat.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • Don’t forget, a former Sox pitcher last inning for them with an axe to grind against us.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:18 pm
  • Timlin with another 1-2-3.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • Drew grounds out. That is another guy getting ready to enter T-Ball status.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • 8 to go, Drew out on a grounder.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • Pedroia legs out an infield single, and luckily (for the Royals) the bad throw hits Dustin passing the back, otherwise Droid might have been at second. Bad luck for our squad, surprise surprise.
Ortiz needs to do something late and close, for once this year.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • Ortiz was pathetic against Gobble last night, picking up where he left off.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • And, pathetic tonight, no contact made on any of his three swings. Right now, I f*cking hate this team. They are barely watchable.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • Papi is not delivering this year at all.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • And like clockwork, the Yankees are coming back in NYC. This lead will be down to six in the loss column within an hour. My proclamation might have been way too generous, 45 days seems like nothing.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • The Yanks have now taken the lead. Pretty sady that they even lead that game giving the inability of Toronto to make Clemens pay for another mediocre pitching effort.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Grudzy just committed larceny on that grounder by Youk there.

    attackgerbil July 18, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • Youk grounds out on a nice play by Grudz to end the inning. Sox now 3-19 with RISP this series. Against the ROYALS.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • Youk grounds out with two men on.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:34 pm
  • Ok, I am outta here. In fact, I think I am putting myself on a baseball moratorium for a little while, I am simply not deriving any enjoyment from this at all right now.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • Is it me or is the first-base umpire calling everyone out on close plays?

    Atheose - SF July 18, 2007, 9:38 pm
  • aaaaaaaaand right on time ARod drives in 2 runs to put the Yankmees up 2-1. Anyone got a razorblade for me to borrow?

    Atheose - SF July 18, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • A K and nailed runner trying to steal second for a DP.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Delcarmen with another strikeout to end the inning. Still down 1

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • The Royals are 32-5 when leading going into the 8th.

    SF July 18, 2007, 9:48 pm
  • Lowell flies out to left.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:50 pm
  • Tek: 1 for 14 vs. KC this year.

    Hudson July 18, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Tek K’s

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • KC 8-45 otherwise. What a difference.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • Crisp triples. Lugo, now is your time to sieze the moment.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:55 pm
  • Lugo flies out to center. Crisp stranded at third.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 9:59 pm
  • Papelbon pitching.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • All up to Papi now with Drew and Pedroia both grounding out.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • Papi singles, Manny to the plate with one on, two out.

    Anonymous July 18, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • Cora PRs for Papi.

    Rob July 18, 2007, 10:16 pm
  • We are now 20-21 over the past two months. Maybe SF has the right idea of checking out for a few days.

    DW-sf July 18, 2007, 10:20 pm
  • Manny pops out to second to end the game. How friggin pathetic this team has become. We have lost a series to the Royals, one loss to Odalis Perez and another loss to a kid on a pitch count.
Theo needs to clear the three T-Ball players we have on the roster and get some replacements.
The funny thing is that most writers are saying that we can’t go in the tank long enough to blow the lead because of our starting pitching. Well the SPs are not getting the job done, and when they do, the bats do jackshit at the plate. We have to many players getting paid big money for not producing in a little over a month.
