Back To Business: Halos-Yanks gamer I

AngelsFan did a great job bringing us up to speed on the state of baseball affairs in Anaheim. It’s the first meeting of the year between the Bombers and the Halos as the Angels visit The Stadium for a three-game set starting tonight in the Bronx. The Yankees outscored their west coast nemesis 55-50 last season but lost the split, four games to six. Rookie Tyler Clippard gets the ball for the Yanks; hopefully we’ll see more of that fantastic combination of location, speed and composure that he showed in his debut against the Mets. Jered Weaver gets the ball for the LA of A. As far as the Yankee state of affairs, New York got a day of rest after their desperately-needed series win earlier in the week, which gave Steinbrenner time to speak, describing their status and needs: “We just have to get out there and compete, compete hard, and win.” Pedestrian? Maybe. Accurate? Damn straight. Lineups in the extended, comment away.

  • Picking nits, but I’m pretty sure Clippard’s debut was vs that other NY team.

    Nate=Soxfan May 25, 2007, 6:34 pm
  • ESP, gerbil?

    Nate=Soxfan May 25, 2007, 6:36 pm
  • Yeah, Nate, fixed it before I even saw your reply, I’m rushing these gamers out the door; sorry about the brevity in both. I’m Mr. Mom right now and the rest of the staff are all on holiday.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 6:36 pm
  • …the rest of the staff are all on holiday.
Slackers. Your tireless dedication is appreciated.

    Nate=Soxfan May 25, 2007, 6:37 pm
  • Thanks. :) I don’t know that they are all actually on holiday, but none of them ever return my calls. Paul once muttered something about left-handed, red headed step something or other on a voice mail, but I couldn’t quite make it out.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 6:43 pm
  • 1-0 Angels on two doubles.

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Yankees needs to get New Centerfielder next year. Damon’s can’t cover any ground in the outfield more… Good job by Cashman signing this bum…

    Hg_Yf May 25, 2007, 7:55 pm
  • HG- I just saw that post on LoHud Yanks. How many other blogs did you post that on?

    Ayuh - SF May 25, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • Hg, us Sox fans feel the same way about Crisp – opnly with regards to his hiting insstead of his fielding. :-)

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:01 pm
  • lohud and this one.

    Hg_Yf May 25, 2007, 8:03 pm
  • That homerun from ARod was to right center.
Top of third: Clippard is solid and retires the Halos in order.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:03 pm
  • I’d have to disagree with you Hg. Damon’s arm (or lack thereof) was a known item. Even though is power is down this year, his OBP and baserunning have been a real asset. He’s a great leadoff hitter.
Typepad is currently down for maintenance. Notable events during the outage:
Bottom third: Matsui hits a two strike pitch the other way for a GRD to the left field corner.
ARod up with two away, Hideki on second; takes two strikes, then a ball. The 1-2 was a hard shot to short. Great sliding backhanded stop by Cabrera to threw across the diamond where Kotchman made a good scoop to retire Alex by half a step. Very nice play to end the inning.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • Appears like its goign to be a Bullpen Night for both teams.
    After 3
    Clippard – 62 pitches
    Weaver – 57 Pitches

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:14 pm
  • Kotchman leads off the top of the fourth with a home run to right field on a 1-0 fastball up. 3-1 Angels. Kendrick follows that with a single to left field just by ARod.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • DeSalvo and Vizcaino up in the pen for NY.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Please God, no Vizcaino!….

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Tryign to pickoff Kendrick a lot. Is he really that fast? He’s only stolen two bases in three attempts

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Napoli pops an 0-2 to left for the first out. Hillenbrand up.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:20 pm
  • Two away as Shea grounds out to Doug unassisted.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • Hillenbrand is an idiot and swigns at the first pitch. I don’t know what teh result is as Gameday hasnt told me yet.
Oh.. he grounded out, but no DP. Kendrick at Second.
Still… swingign at the first pitch? Waws it a hit and run or something?

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:22 pm
  • WP advances Kendrick to third.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:23 pm
  • Dio – yes. Doug looked but didn’t have a good angle on the throw.
Murphy gets suckered by a change on the 3-1. Ballsy pitch there.
Then gets him to pop out to ARod on another change. Nice.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • Tommy Murphy is a horrible batter and Clippard escapes with minimum damage.
He actually only threw 14 pitches in that inning, despite the two hits and a run.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • Posada down swinging to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
Giambi singles on a line drive up the middle. Abreu up.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • Bobby takes three consecutive balls. The 3-0 is a fastball strike. 3-1: floats away and high to make it 1st and 2nd with one away to Cano.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Three straight balls to Abreu. Why? Doesnt Weaver know he hardly ever hits anything?
A strike then another Ball. Abreu waks. Go ahead run at the plate.
    Apparently Weaver is stupid.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:32 pm
  • Answer: Yes, he is. 2-0 on Cano.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:33 pm
  • Robi takes low away. The 1-0 is low. 2-0: grounded to third. Figgins gets Abreu at second but the transfer is not in time; Cano safe on first, Giambi at third, two away to Doug.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:34 pm
  • Doug takes ball one, then another pitch away. The 2-0 is a change swung on and missed. 2-1: changeup cut on and fouled back. Deuces: Doug rips it to right for a single. Giambi scores, Cano to second. Angels 3, Yankees 2.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:38 pm
  • Dougie = clutch.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Damon takes ball one, then misses at a change. The 1-1 is away. 2-1 is fouled back. Deuces: low to make it full. The payoff: Damon hits a line drive to Guerrero to end the inning.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:40 pm
  • Le sigh.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 8:43 pm
  • OOo, I liek the detaisl Gerb, thanks.
Especially since GAmeDay jsut.. stopped working.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:44 pm
  • Why is Clip out? Did he get hurt or something?!

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 8:45 pm
  • I dunno, ym. He wasn’t pitchign all that well and maybe the Yanks didn’t want the game to pull away. They had DeSalvo available, so why not?

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • DeSalvo says “Hey! I can throw Wild Pitches too! See?”

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:48 pm
  • YM: 77 pitches. Probably wanted to see DeSalvo. Not liking what I’m seeing so far. Walked Figgins, almost through it away on a pickoff, WP to advance Figgins to second. Ugh.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Now a walk to Cabrera. Vlad up. FEAR. This is bad.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:49 pm
  • Vlad singles the second pitch to right to score Figgins, Cabrera to third. Angels 4, Yankees 2.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:50 pm
  • With that pitch, could have been worse. It was fat.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Gerbil is a prophet.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:51 pm
  • Just in case anyone thought we can still win this game…MdS wants to squash any hope.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • Stupid.

    walein May 25, 2007, 8:52 pm
  • Purposeless move by Torre.

    walein May 25, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • Full count on Gary. Pretty much anythibg but a K scores a run.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • Gary doubles. Run Scores. Second and Third, no outs.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Pretty easy call with Meat DeSalvo throwing to the best bad ball hitter in the game.
He works full against GMJR, who rips a double to the right field to score Cabrera; the ball takes a good bounce for Abreu and Vlad holds at third. Angels 5, Yankees 2. DeSalvo gets the hell out of there before he starts getting pelted by 9-volts. Vizcaino coming on, GMJR on 2nd and still no outs.
Can we get a do-over on the Clippard hook?

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • can we say…new pitcher? This ain’t workin’ out? Maybe Joe?

    walein May 25, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • *curls into fetal position, weeps softly*

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 8:56 pm
  • Look! Its Vizcaino! Hi Viz!

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • You let Clippard work thru it ( especially since he’s not getting destroyed)…and if CLIPPARD leads off the inning with a walk to Chone Figgins…then, MAYBE you pull him. DeSalvo isn’t that good in the first place and you’re going to try him out in the long relief spot, for the first time, in a game that’s well within reach?
    Dumb.

    walein May 25, 2007, 8:59 pm
  • Viz gets a good out (ground ball to 3rd.. runners can’t move), and now intents the red-hot Kendrick to, hopefully (for the Yanks), set up the double play.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • I’m going to put money down that Jered Weaver Ks 2 and gets a quick fly or ground ball in the bottom half of the inning. The Yankees have been all over him…but now the pressure is back off.

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Also,
Taking a pitcher out well before his pitch count, a young pitcher too, before he can even qualify for the win is dumb.

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:02 pm
  • IBB to Kendrick.
Napoli takes strike one, then a pitch away. Breaking pitch gets him going and missing. The 1-2 is away low for deuces. The next pitch is a slider away to make it full. The payoff pitch: popped up behind the plate but it drifts behind the screen. Another payoff: almost beaned Napoli. Run is forced in to make it Angels 6, Yankees 2.
    Gawd.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Wow. Viz walks in the run. Tremendous.

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:04 pm
  • Intent backfires as Viz walks in another run

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:05 pm
  • Shea breaks his bat and grounds into the 543 to end the bleeding. Hard slide at second by Napoli to break up the DP but Cano got it over.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Shea “Horribel Pickup” grounds into that doubleplay that was supposed to happen LAST batter.
Damage is done though. Still could be a LOT worse. Easily so.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:07 pm
  • chalk that inning up to Joe Torre

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:09 pm
  • After being down 0-2, Jeter works the count full. The payoff is inside and Jeter is aboard to lead off the Yankee 5th.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:11 pm
  • Kotchman makes a great stab on the line to rob Matsui of a double. Jeter to second on the play.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • ARod down swinging on a low changeup.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • Posada lifts it to the wall in left center with a double to score Jeter. Angels 6, Yankees 3.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:16 pm
  • Holy crap is Posada slow.

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:19 pm
  • Giambi goes inside out and singles to left center. Murphy made a good throw home to get Posada by a mile. Not sure why they sent one of the slowest guys on the team from second when the ball was hit in front of him. Grr.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • Was it a bad call by Bowa at third?

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:20 pm
  • Only good news is that Weaver is probably done. The bad news is the Halos ‘pen.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • Couldn’t see if Bowa sent him, but if he did, it was a horrible call.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • with Abreu behind him….they should have waited…Abreu has been hitting more like himself of late and if you’re going to stick him in the bottom of the lineup you should take advantage of the fact that he’s such a good hitter hitting in the 7 hole.

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:26 pm
  • mmm delcious VIzcaino. So Good….

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:27 pm
  • Bowa sent him. With two outs and the number 9 guy up (I think) its not a horrible call. If Posada takes the cement out of his shoes he makes it by ten feet.
…and thats the millionth walk issued by the Yankee bullpen! Cabrera wins a gift certificate to Matress World and a year’s supply of gum…
uh-oh… Gurrero just crushed one to the wall. Hopefully for the Yankees Torre’s hip doesn’t give out before he can take Vizcaino out.

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • Heh. Heh heh. HAHAHAHAH!…
    grip….on sanity…slipping….

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • If only I could spell “mattress”…

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • GameDay cracks me up
In the play by play Summary
Pitching CHange: Ron Villone replaces Luis Vizcaino
Pitching Change: Ron Villone replaces Ron Villone
    What?

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:29 pm
  • Yeah, D. It was wierd. Torre took Villone out and replaced him with Villone. Never seen anything like it.
The Yankees are down 8-3, but it could be twice that so easily. The Angels have left the bases loaded, two guys on third in separate innings… maybe more, but really, isn’t that enough?

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:33 pm
  • I do not understand the early hook on Clip. Did Joe seriously think DeSalvo/Viz would do better?

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 9:35 pm
  • Damon just straight-up dropped one. Bases loaded for the Angels.

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:36 pm
  • They are tryign the Intent Kendrick to get the DP thign again.
I hope it ends similarly as it did last time!

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • I’m guessing Torre thought that Clippard was tired, or didn’t want to stretch him beyond where he was. There is no other explanation.
The Yankees announcers just said that, so far, in the last two innings the Yankees have walked 6 guys.

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • i don’t care if they think he’s tired. 77 pitches in the middle of May!? He shouldn’t be pitching as a starter in baseball if that’s true…but that’s not what really happened. Bad call by Joe and Gator and Mattingly.

    walein May 25, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • I don’t know whats worse, Damon’s arm, or Posada’s speed.

    mattymatty May 25, 2007, 9:41 pm
  • Yanks fail to get Napoli to GIDP again.
    Sac fly scores a run.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • It’s a push, MM.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Ugh. I went to feed the young’en, and come back to this mess. I should have stayed away.

    attackgerbil May 25, 2007, 9:43 pm
  • Mr. Wang, the Yankee nation turns its loney eye to you.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 9:45 pm
  • *lonely eye, even

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • Angels no longer have to toss their best bullpen guys at the Yanks, not yet anyway, thnaks ot a 7-run lead.
    Carrasco on the mound.
Thing is.. how many more innings can Villone go? He’s already at 23. Many mroe and he’ll be unavailable if its a CLOSE game tommorrow. Assume the same for Bruney, that leaves Proctor and Farnsy.
Of course Mo hasn’t pitched in 500 years, so maybe they’ll use him and just.. just.. make me giggle with joy.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:47 pm
  • To prove a point, Carrasco sets down the Yanks 1-2-3.

    Dionysus May 25, 2007, 9:51 pm
  • atleast Jeter’s streak is still alive…
    cough; cough “moral victory”

    leaderjeter May 25, 2007, 10:03 pm
  • Melky in to PH for Damon. Interesting.

    yankeemonkey May 25, 2007, 10:05 pm
  • Game over
    Angels 10 Yanks 6

    Rob May 25, 2007, 10:49 pm
  • Cashman is an a . s . s .h . o . l. e .
Torre is misusing the pitching staff. Mismanagement of the staff has been as much an issue as has been the injuries . Just a terrible by Joe and Louisianna Lightining . Just because Guidry pitched well as a player doesn’t mean he is a good coach . Babe Ruth once asked to manage the team , and he wasn’t given the job . Just because you were a legend on the field doesn’t mean you will be one in the dugout .
