Hide Your First-Born Sons: Angels-Sox Gamer II

All right, really. Isn’t this a little ridiculous?

Added to the list of those stricken with flu (Jason Varitek, Manny Delcarmen, Josh Beckett to some extent) or injury (Coco Crisp, Mike Lowell, Alex Cora, Beckett again) is Daisuke Matsuzaka. He was supposed to start tonight, but he’s got the flu, too. So it’s Jon Lester instead.

Oh, and Kevin Youkilis has a tight butt… Erm, that is, he had a stiff back, and the stiffness traveled a little bit south, so he’s a scratch, as well. Craig Hansen is back up with the big club after seemingly turning things around in Pawtucket, replacing David Pauley, whom we hope to never see again.

The Sox won last night with an emergency starter and seemingly half a lineup. Looks like they’ll need to do it again. They’re going for lucky seven in a row tonight — and from the look of things, they’ll need all the luck they can get.

  • The number of juvenile cracks I am trying to avoid making in light of the Varitek “tight butt” affliction is astounding.
And yes – you could therefore say I am having trouble avoiding juvenile butt cracks but that would give entirely the wrong impression.
The real point here is I just really dislike Varitek even though he is the Sox batter I am probably least worried to see at the plate in a tight spot.
Sorry sf’s – just a little silliness there. Good luck with your game tonight…

  • IH…less worried than Lugo?
Lord, the Sox are the walking wounded…hey whatevs, as long as you’re winning, beat Garland to a pulp and hope the damage is greater than the Angels beating Lester to a pulp. Hey, they’re hack-happy, maybe they’ll swing at ball 3 and 4 all night. (I want to believe in you, Lester…really, I do.)

    Devine April 23, 2008, 6:07 pm
  • Isnt this short rest for Lester? Mind if I panic? Thank god I jsut bought beer.

    Dionysus April 23, 2008, 6:11 pm
  • The Red Sox still need a starter tomorrow.
Buchholz likely goes Saturday in Tampa, Beckett will go Sunday.
Will Wakefield start tomorrow on short rest or save him for game 1 in Tampa where he pitches so well.
If the save Wakefield one option could be Tavarez… Another could be the young man whos scheduled to start tomorrow for Portland.
    Justin Masterson anyone?

    TJ April 23, 2008, 6:12 pm
  • Mind if you panic, Dio? Don’t you always kind of panic? It’s one of the most amusing thing about game threads.

    rootbeerfloat April 23, 2008, 6:18 pm
  • Maybe Daisuke will eb able to start tommorrow, TJ.. though I doubt it. This flu is ridiculous.
If not Daisuke, send Coco to the DL retroactively and call up Masterson

    Dionysus April 23, 2008, 6:19 pm
  • Coco is starting tomorrow according to Francona. Im not sure on Hansen’s status he was up in 05 so im not sure if that started his clock and hes out of options… if hes not out of options he may only be up for a day and then back down tomorrow.
If hes out of options Aardsma may find himself designated tomorrow.

    TJ April 23, 2008, 6:21 pm
  • Not ALWAYS.
    Just.. umm….
    Shut up!

    Dionysus April 23, 2008, 6:25 pm
  • Dio –
It’s a good thing. Makes me feel positively calm, cool and collected.

    rootbeerfloat April 23, 2008, 6:28 pm
  • Actually the picture of Jon Lester pitching to Chone Figgins ought to panic everyone.

    rootbeerfloat April 23, 2008, 6:32 pm
  • or Gary Matthews

    rootbeerfloat April 23, 2008, 7:09 pm
  • Well, I’ll say this…he’s throwing strikes. (Four batters in anyway.)

    Devine April 23, 2008, 7:11 pm
  • Okay…that could have been worse.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 7:14 pm
  • Agreed, Devine. That’s my hope for the whole game: “could have been worse.”

    stuck working April 23, 2008, 7:16 pm
  • 9 pitches and we’re done??

    rootbeerfloat April 23, 2008, 7:20 pm
  • Yeah sw, all things considered, winning this would be like stealing (unless they bludgeon Garland mercilessly–not this inning).

    Devine April 23, 2008, 7:20 pm
  • Uh, yeah, the bottom of that inning…not sure how it could have been much worse. No one was injured, at least. And Lester’s still warm!

    stuck working April 23, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • This is ridiculous. Who the hell is in charge of anti-flu duty in the Sox’ clubhouse?
Whoever it is should go join that guy who couldn’t keep the Yankees’ hamstrings healthy training mulleted Floridians at the local Gold’s. Fire someone!!!

    SF April 23, 2008, 7:21 pm
  • Okay, if they pull this one off, I’m going to fly to Boston and start standing in line outside Yawkey Way for my 2008 WS tickets.

    Jackie (SF) April 23, 2008, 7:24 pm
  • This game will end very poorly unless the offense breaks out in a hurry. Lester on short rest scares the crap out of me, and this should probably be much worse than it is so far.

    Micah-SF April 23, 2008, 7:31 pm
  • Lester on short rest? He struggled enough as it is on NORMAL rest. Ugh.
At least we’re only down 2-0 after two innings, and Manny just got an outfield assist. Giggle.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 7:32 pm
  • Manny!

    rootbeerfloat April 23, 2008, 7:34 pm
  • My away msg right now is “Manny Ramirez drinks your milkshake.” I saw There will be blood the other night and am obsessed with that line. And if there was anyone other than Daniel Plainview who would be able to say it, it’s Manny.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 7:35 pm
  • The Sox are going to need a touchdown tonight, I think. If not more.

    SF April 23, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • I find MLB Gameday to be hideously unreliable. It’s been that way all season, it seems.

    SF April 23, 2008, 7:41 pm
  • Hey Devine, weren’t you just insulting Julio “Singles Machine” Lugo?

    stuck working April 23, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Who IS this guy and what has he done with Julio Lugo?

    Micah-SF April 23, 2008, 7:43 pm
  • Call me optimistic but I’d like to know what happened to the real Lugo LAST year.

    FenSheaParkway April 23, 2008, 7:46 pm
  • SF – as for the problems with MLB Gameday, I’ve noticed that ESPN’s Gamecast is actually a bit closer to real time so far this season. No sure why.

    stuck working April 23, 2008, 7:53 pm
  • MLB Gameday has been bad this year. Last year it was perfect, but this year they get stuff wrong all the time and have to go back a few minutes later and correct their errors.
    Manny please drink Garland’s milkshake!

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:04 pm
  • Have I said enough how much I love Sean Casey on this team?

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:21 pm
  • Unreal, why do you have your hottest hitter sacrifice a slow player to third? Very conservative managing (dare I say BAD managing?), considering Lester is on the verge of collapse every inning. A tie game doesn’t get you very far in the fourth inning. Bad Tito!

    SF April 23, 2008, 8:24 pm
  • Goddamn Gary Matthews Jr.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:27 pm
  • I am almost ready to pay for Lester’s train fare to Pawtucket.

    SF April 23, 2008, 8:27 pm

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:37 pm
  • They pulled Lester? He was only at 81 pitches! I was actually somewhat pleased with his pitch count for once.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:43 pm
  • Fuckin Craig Hansen.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:47 pm
  • Oh shit, who is the injury delay for?

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • gameday says “injury delay.” what’s up?

    z118 April 23, 2008, 8:54 pm
  • Lugo fouled a ball off his ankle. Hes ok

    TJ April 23, 2008, 9:01 pm
  • I have to say, that error by Pedroia on the popup was one of the more hilarious things I’ve seen lately. He just fell over.

    AndrewYF April 23, 2008, 9:10 pm
  • Justin Masterson starting tomorrow.

    SF April 23, 2008, 9:13 pm
  • I only have gameday so I totally missed it! What happened Andrew?
    Masterson tomorrow? SCORE!

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:19 pm
  • Masterson will start for Boston tomorrow

    TJ April 23, 2008, 9:23 pm
  • So… can we make yet ANOTHER dramatic comeback tonight?

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:24 pm
  • WTF Gameday? Two outs, and then it says for Papi “in play, out(s)”, freezes for three minutes, then Papi walks. It’s useless.

    SF April 23, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • doh’ SF beat me

    TJ April 23, 2008, 9:25 pm
  • Bah, Manny grounds out immediately.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:26 pm
  • Yeah SF, I hate that. Another problem it’ll have is that it’ll show someone as being on base, but not show how they got there at all. The gameday crews this year are REALLY lazy.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:30 pm
  • Like right now. 2 outs, but it only shows Mathis’ strikeout in the log.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:31 pm
  • Okay, Sox, I await your inevitable surge here.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:34 pm
  • Sean Casey drinks your milkshake!

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:37 pm
  • LET THE ONSLAUGHT BEGIN! Lugo grounds out and the man on 2nd drops the ball. Runners at first and second with 1 out.
    Come on Lowrie!

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • 1st and 2nd, 1 out. One step closer to getting Papi to the plate in the 9th at least. Lowrie up.
    Ball 1.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:38 pm
  • DP! Ewwwww!

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Damnit Lowrie.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:39 pm
  • Cash, Ellsbury and Pedroia in the 9th. Ortiz if anyone gets on. This is building up to a dramatic ending, especially with K-Rod on the mound, who we have knocked around lately.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:40 pm
  • Wtf this ump is squeezing Timlin like it’s going out of style.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:44 pm
  • 2 routine grounders so far for Timlin. Here’s the big, scary man.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:46 pm
  • Chopped through the hole. A play Lowell might make if he’s in the game.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:47 pm
  • Vlad manages to bounce a grounder out of the infield. Three ground balls, one was bound to get through. Timlin pitching well though.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:47 pm
  • Damnit. Down 2 now.

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:52 pm
  • Awww dang, after the “stolen base”, Hunter drives Guerrero home, though he then gets caught trying for 2nd. Gonna be tough.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:53 pm
  • Cash hits it hard, at least.
    We need you Ellsbury!

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:54 pm
  • Someone get Mike Timlin a gold watch pronto.

    SF April 23, 2008, 9:55 pm
  • Struck ‘im out. It’s all Pedroia now.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:55 pm
  • Down to DPed

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 9:56 pm
  • Sox lose. Guess it has to happen sometimes.

    Devine April 23, 2008, 9:58 pm
  • Portland Press-Herald reporting that Justin Masterson will be called up from Double-A and start Thursday for boston. Who gets dropped from the 40-man roster?

    I'mBillMcNeal April 23, 2008, 10:19 pm
  • I’m laughing my ass off.
The Yawkey Way Store is having a clearance sale. Here’s the link to the kids merchandise:
Note what’s going for $5 and what’s going for $3.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 23, 2008, 10:26 pm
  • > Note what’s going for $5 and what’s going for $3.
That is funny. I also noticed that micro-Schilling has been remaindered. Hint of things to come?

    attackgerbil April 23, 2008, 10:33 pm
  • Wells and Nomar for only $3? Nice!

    Atheose April 23, 2008, 10:41 pm
  • Apparently they were too good to send to Somalia.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 23, 2008, 10:44 pm
  • I am tempted to get the Pokey T-shirt. He did make the last out of the you-know-what series.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 23, 2008, 10:45 pm
  • I do love me some Pokey Reese.
