Sure-fire hall-of-famer Ichiro Suziki has been traded to the Yankees for D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. The Mariner fan in me is seriously depressed. Screw that guy (as in me.. not Suzuki).

  • I *wanted* to watch the game tonight. Now I *have* to watch the game tonight.

  • It’s a weird thing, living in the NW and having watched Ichiro for so long now, but thinking that it really was time for him to move on from the Mariners and for them to reestablish an identity not built around #51, who is obviously not the player he once was. For him to go the Yankees is just very strange from this fan’s perspective. Now I really wish I had ponied up for tickets tonight at Safeco. Baseball fandom is a bizarre game unto itself sometimes.

  • I am totally re-energized as a fan…

I think if you went back to posts last season, maybe even the season before I was hoping we could get him. He isn’t the player he once was but he is still fast and still great in the OF.

This is awesome. Really, really awesome. I think he will be ready to rock in the Bronx and try and help get that ring.

  • That’s a good get for the Yanks. An HOFer.
The competitive side of me, which is waning in enthusiasm these days, hopes it’s a flop. But take that in the spirit in which it’s intended.

  • I’m very pleased with this move. I will be surprised if he doesn’t perform better with NY than he has in Seattle this year. He has seemed to want out of there for a while and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect him to rebound when he moves from a perennial last-place team to a first-place team. He fills exactly what we lost with Gardner in terms of disruptive speed on the basepads and great outfield defense and I expect he will hit at least as well as Gardner was hitting. Certainly makes them even more fun to watch this year. Kind of hope he doesn’t continue to hit 8th – would rather he hit 9th right in front of Jeter.

  • Mark Feinsand @BloggingBombers tweeted yesterday:

Overheard in press box: “Ichiro is only batting eighth because you can’t bat Russell Martin 11th.”
