An intiguing development: In addition to Leo Mazzone, Gil Patterson, Gator, and Dave Righetti (NO!!!), Jimmy Key has apparently entered the running to replace Mel Stottlemyre as Yankee pitching coach. How nice would it be to have old no. 22 back in the fold? He was an absolute YF favorite during his stint with the club, a real maestro on the mound, a thinker rather than than an old-fashioned gunner like the man who inherited his number—and is now wearing it in Houston. One knock on Mel was a reluctance to emphasize the off-speed pitch in favor of the slider. We can presume that would not be a problem with Key. Anyway, Kitty would be pleased.

Meanwhile, Girardi—the Torre heir apparent—meeting with the DRays for the 2nd time. Girardi/Key/Mattingly. We wouldn’t mind seeing that trifecta on the Yankee bench for some time.
