Into the Void

Look, we’re certainly no Jason Giambi fan; he is an admitted cheater, wears the pinstripes.  But we’re an even smaller fan of conveniently moralistic ownership, the kind that agrees to have any steroid-related language struck at the request of a player’s agent and then considers voiding said player’s contract after he "(re?)confesses" to possibly doing some "stuff" that may have been steroids, depending on how deeply (or shallow-ly) you parse his words.  If the Yankees try to void Giambi’s contract, they (and the supremely disingenuous Brian Cashman, who we are happy to say is having a pretty brutal section of what may be an all-time annus horribilus) are hypocrites of the first order.

  • I wonder if the Yankees have any language in Clemens’ contract regarding PEDs? I only ask this because Clemens was named in Grimsley’s affidavit and would seem to present at least some risk on this front. I want to make it clear that this is not an accusation. I wonder if the Yankees changed their policy regarding this kind of verbiage after the Giambi deal? Or, does Roger get what he wants, language-wise?

  • SF, if you think the Hendricks Bros. would have allowed that, you’re nuts.

  • I would think Cashman has bigger problems on his hands than Giambi’s watered down re-confession. If they do void his contract, they get rid of a guy who’s batting better than Damon or Abreu at the moment and by all counts is a nice guy to have in the clubhouse. (I base that last bit on what I heard when he was with Oakland since I now live in CA and get more local color stories on the As and Giants.) Can they really afford to do that? And if PEDs are as wide-spread as everyone says, this sends a chill through the clubhouse with everyone else wondering if a 2 or 3 year old transgression can lose them their job as well. We turn a blind eye to USING the stuff but don’t you dare tell the truth about it??

  • I don’t imagine they did, but if that IS the case, then it reinforces the hypocrisy of the Yankee ownership, and also reinforces the accuracy of Giambi’s statements regarding their understanding of what went on/is going on.
