Jason and the ‘Stache: Could This Be Love?

(Sorry, this is the only photo of Giambi and the ‘stache I could find. Hat tip to Cliff Corcoran at Bronx Banter for posting it)

Jason Giambi would fit in with hipsters from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to the Mission district in San Francisco to the set of Punk’d. In my humble opinion, I like the new look. I’d really like it if the whole team followed suit. Remember when the Riley-era-Knicks all changed their appearance for the post-season that one year? They all wore black sneakers and shaved their heads. Who didn’t think that was cool? Imagine A-Rod with the Mattingly mustache. Imagine Torre looking like John Holmes.  It will never happen because great things rarely do.

  • Just say no. It looks terrible. Besides, could Melky even grow one?

  • reminds me of the blue oyster bar in the police academy movies.

  • I have to agree Rob. I’m sort of hoping if we don’t say anything it will just go away.

  • Whoever made the “Blue Oyster” comment nailed it. LOL, I keep hearing the music they would play in that bar in my head now.

  • Can we have a photo please?

    Sam August 16, 2006, 12:29 pm
  • I too would like to see a photo so I could appropriately mock Gimabi for something other than, you know, cheating at baseball yet still being a “true Yankee.”

  • Waahhh Giambi’s cheater, Waahhhh HGH, Waaahhh. Come on, let’s save the Giambi crying for when cracks one past Pesky’s Pole this weekend. (I am trying to get the rivalry juices flowing for this weekend, it’s been too civil around here during the non Sox-Yanks play)

    bloodyank78 August 16, 2006, 12:52 pm
  • Hey if your conscience lets you root for Giambi, more power to ya.
It looks like the RUA has a little stubble going on there too. Is Steinbrenner on vacation?

    Paul SF August 16, 2006, 12:54 pm
  • He’s always got a away with a day-old stubble look. I guess he made such a sacrifice to his image by coming to the Yanks (poor lamb) that Big George lets it slide…

  • Yeah,…
When the Twinks had Ortiz he was 35 pounds lighter,… and never hit more than 20 dingers. At age 29 he gains 30 pounds of muscle,… hits everything into orbit,… and complains that the Latino players have a disadvantage regarding the new drug policy because of the language barrier. Does anyone seriously think Ortiz is clean? Come on,… Giambi got caught and admitted it,… Ortiz hasn’t been caught yet.

    mntwn August 16, 2006, 1:22 pm
  • Watch out – Paulie’s gonna tell the teacher if you don’t stop!
Paul, if you’re naive enough to believe your whole team is clean, then you deserve all the crow you’re going to have to eat when we find out otherwise…

    MoForPresident August 16, 2006, 2:26 pm
  • Never said the Sox were clean, but Giambi’s admitted cheating.
We’ve discussed the Ortiz stuff ad nauseum. Contrary to your wishful thinking, he has not gained appreciable mass since coming to the Sox, and he’s increased his home run totals in each of the past seven years, not just the last three or four. So, please, check your facts before you start throwing out dumb insults and dumber accusations.

    Paul SF August 16, 2006, 3:03 pm
  • Wow,.. you really have drank the Red Sox Kool-aid. I’ve followed Ortiz from the day the Twinks called him up,… and if you really think he hasn’t bulked up,… then we are done here because I won’t argue with the ignorant.
I wish I was still naive enough to pretend that guys who gain big mass and double and triple their power numbers are doing through training and diet,… but that isn’t the world we live in.

    mntwn August 16, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • It sounds like you might be a bit upset that the Twinkies gave up on Ortiz — or that the Yankees passed him up. The motivations of the bitter are quite enlightening, particularly when their argument amounts to, “You’re ignorant, so I won’t argue with you.”
Incidentally, the largest Ortiz jump in homers — 11, following a batting stance change and playing more than any other point in his career. Not quite “doubling and tripling”…

    Paul SF August 16, 2006, 3:26 pm
  • Gee,.. you are right… Ortiz’s protestations to the unfairness of the drug policy, his rise from a 29 year old hitter with mediocre power to a 33 year old hitter with Ruthian power, the exposure of MLB’s rampant steroid problem,… it all points to Ortiz being a shining beacon of sportmanship.
And all it took was a batting coach to straighten things out.
Next we can discuss a proper diet for Santa’s reindeer.

    Mntwn August 16, 2006, 3:32 pm
  • “Is Steinbrenner on vacation?”
    In a manner of speaking…

Rob (Middletown, CT) August 16, 2006, 3:42 pm
  • Why even get into the ‘roids debates? The truth is that we’ll likely never know with most of these guys. It’s also pretty much a given that every team has had one or more ‘roiders. Beyond that… meh, it’s all baseless posturing.
I root for Giambi because I root for the pinstripes. I know that he cheated and I don’t like it one bit, but my distaste is tempered by the fact that many others cheated too but didn’t get caught. As far as any of us know (key word, that… KNOW), he’s clean now. Presumably he’s been tested and passed. I do not think the testing is foolproof (obviously it isn’t), but it’s the same for all, and it’s all we’ve got for now.
And that’s all I have to say about that.

Rob (Middletown, CT) August 16, 2006, 3:51 pm
  • Throwing around accusations without even the tiniest shred of evidence is silly and irresponsible. So far as we know there hasn’t even been any rumor, correct? Unless we start assuming every player is dirty, let’s stop with this nonsense.

    Yankeemonkey August 16, 2006, 3:57 pm
  • 31 HRs 448 ABs
    41 HRs 582 ABs
    47 HRs 601 ABs
    41 HRs 443 ABs
These have been his numbers since joining the Sox where he said he was able to hit for power and not just moving guys over, as his was told in Minnesota. If we average his numbers out to the max of 601 at bats…
    42 HRs 601 ABs
    42 HRs 601 ABs
    47 HRs 601 ABs
    55 HRs 601 ABs
This isn’t exactly a doubling/tripling more of a guy improving as he hits his prime. He has just recently turned 30 (no idea where you pulled those ages from).

    NeffSox August 16, 2006, 4:02 pm
  • Also Ortiz looks no smaller here than he does now… another no idea where you pulled those weights from.

    NeffSox August 16, 2006, 4:08 pm
  • YM’s the voice of reason here. If a guy’s had rumors swirling around him or has the same trainer as guys who are dirty, that’s one thing. But to take a beacon of the game, with no rumors of any kind, and single him out just because everyone could be guilty — and because your mad he’s on the Red Sox and not the Yankees or Twins — is absolutely irresponsible. And petty.

    Paul SF August 16, 2006, 4:49 pm
  • If any Yankee fans are around, I thought you’d like to know Veras has been sent down and none other than Octavio Dotel has been activated. Let’s hope the Dominican flamethrower shows some of the brilliance he has shown in the past.

    bloodyank78 August 16, 2006, 5:30 pm
  • YM, Until a test for HGH is developed and adopted, suspicion is going to swirl around all players with the physique of “Thing” from the fantastic four. It’s the age we live in.
And Paul, thanks! YOU calling someone else petty! LOL LOL LOL

    MoForPresident August 17, 2006, 10:42 am
  • Are you kidding me. He looks like a porn star. It needs to go ASAP!!

    Beth August 18, 2006, 4:22 pm
  • Giambi’s head has doubled in size since 2002. Yeah, he’s clean. The Yankees embrace cheaters and cheating.

    yankees suck August 21, 2006, 1:24 am
  • Oh good god, Giambi is so on HGH it just ridiculous to say that he is not. He knows there is no testing for it, he is an admitted user of steroids as well. So he quit for a bit, then when he was going to be sent down, all of a sudden this big turn around. ITs just disgusting and incredilby naive to think that yankee fans dont see this. the man is on steroids again. ITs that plain and simple. Just look at him. He is a walking mess! Sweaty , his head is just, ugh i cant even look at him very long. And he blasted two dingers tonight, i want those homers back and i want the ones he hit the 2003 alcs back too. Yankees=CHeaters. They hire cheaters to help them win. And dont tell me they dont know. Bullshit!

  • I want to believe that Ortiz is clean. I love the guy, and I’m a Yankee fan. I watched him play as a promising, much younger, player on the Twin’s single A New Britain team a few years ago. He was a big boy, but much smaller than he is now. Boston fans love to sling mud at the Yankees, and sometimes they’re right, but the Sox have not been caught yet. Explain Kapler’s sudden disappearance, and then reappearance a year later, a miniaturized, less effective, version of his former self. Explain why Curt shot his mouth off about how much he knew about the issue, then clammed up when he got dragged in front of the congressional committee. I don’t think we’re getting the whole story here.

    dc August 22, 2006, 12:13 pm
  • I think Canseco was a lot closer to right about the amount of performance enhancing drugs in MLB then he was given credit for. Giambi got caught, and a number of other MLB’ers have as well,… to think that Ortiz is clean is pollyanic. There was a reason nobody touched Maris’s record for so long. I realize we are on a R-Sox site,.. so we need to toe the company line,… but sooner or later you need to pull your heads out of the sand.

    mntwn August 22, 2006, 4:08 pm
  • Next time you watch Giambi play, look at how much he sweats at the start of the game, even before he takes the field, then look at the other players on the bench, do any of them look as sweaty as Giambi? I read one side effect of HGH is increased perspiration. What a coincidence!!
