Sacrilege! Baseball Prospectus has an entry here (subscription required) proclaiming the current Cardinals more dangerous than the 1927 Yankees!
With all four players [ed: Renteria, Rolen, Pujols, Edmonds] between a .463 and .483 MLVr, the 2004 Cardinals are surely the deepest and steadiest Murderer’s Row in history, and maybe the best.
Let’s see how long it takes intrepid and ego-bashed Yankees fans to attempt a similar, opposing piece involving ridiculous comparisons.
As for me, I think it is almost comically difficult to compare teams across eras, particularly across eras involving a change in the color barrier. It’s interesting to see the statistics, without a doubt, but to proclaim that either team is the “best” is sheer folly.
So go to it, Bombers fans! Start defending!
