Looking Ahead

  • if the Sox go 0-9 the rest of the way, the Yankees have to go 1-9 to win the division
  • if the Sox go 1-8 the rest of the way, the Yankees have to win two games to take the AL East
  • if the Sox go 2-7 the rest of the way, the Yankees have to go 3-7 to take the division crown

  • the apex of pessimism, sf
my only question: will they be able to use gagne that many games in a row?

  • So your saying there’s still a chance.

  • “So your saying there’s still a chance.”
    ay-oh!

  • Those are pretty dismal.
There’s a bright side, though- if the Sox go 2-7, the Tigers would have to go 9-0 to tie the WC race. So the Sox only need 3 wins to wrap that up.

  • dc/YFiB:
See the “humor” tag at the bottom of the post. I was riffing on the “if we play .500 then TEAM X needs to win out” stuff you always see.

Even as I’m sure many of you feel the same way (though hopefully not about the furniture), the Sox are making the playoffs. Once there, I like our chances.

  • i knew you were joking sf…i was too

    dc September 20, 2007, 9:35 am
  • but joking aside, i still don’t think the yanks will win the division, so any real anxiety being felt by sox fans, while understandable, is unfortunate…i said weeks ago i’d settle for the wild card, and that’s still my focus believe it or not, although i wouldn’t be telling the truth if i didn’t admit that i am peeking at the sox scores more now…i also said back then that i was so disappointed with the underachieving yankees that maybe they didn’t deserve the wild card, and it might save me some embarrassment if they simply didn’t make the playoffs rather than get in and make an early exit…some of my faith has been restored, but i’m still not sure which yankee team will show up this next few weeks [assuming playoffs]…the only consistent thing about both of our teams this year has been their inconsistency…one of them could get hot [arguably the yanks are now], and blow through the playoffs, or not…i still like the sox pitching, speed, and defense, despite the recent pitching stumbles…

    dc September 20, 2007, 9:49 am
  • DC: the Yankees have arguably been the most consistent team in baseball since July 1. And consistently good. I’m not sure what more you could ask of them right now as far as that goes.

dc: I don’t get this. The Yanks have the best lineup in baseball, bar none. It’s staggering. The pitching is not up to the lineup, but clearly it’s a starting staff that can win big games. The back end of the bullpen is stabilized and fearsome. I just don’t understand the lowered expectations at this point in the season. It’s no longer May.

  • Um, am I wrong or is dc arging with himself here? Gollum!!!

    IronHorse (yf) September 20, 2007, 9:54 am
  • no, that was me, SF. I didn’t even change my handle, but “dc” showed up. Honest truth, I am an author and don’t change my name field, ever. Curious to know what happens when I push the “post” button right now…

    SF September 20, 2007, 9:57 am
  • i agree with you IH…i was actually talking about the season as a whole for the most part…the yankees made things very difficult for themselves with their horrendous april and may, and i sound foolish trashing the winningest team in baseball since the break, but even over that span we’ve had blips like moose’s meltdown a few starts ago, and farnsworth’s continued farns-unworthyness, making it necessary to fall back on a rookie…thankfully joba’s been up to the challenge, or the yanks have a few less wins…but, i probably exaggerated a bit…

  • I read that Post article this morning and just shook my head. It is so reminiscent of the scene in The Natural, when Hobbs asks Max “Did you ever actually play baseball?”. These rags are pathetic.

What you call “pessimism” I call an acute and perceptive understanding of the limitations of the team I root for.

    SF September 20, 2007, 10:38 am
  • IH-
Its a travesty really. He has a whole 30 some odd AB slump. Man that really must mean he isnt clutch. I love how he totally discount the game winning RBI he had against his team’s biggest rival 5 days ago. I hate the post….

SF, would you mind if I put that on a T-Shirt and sell it at Giant games?

    John - YF (Trisk) September 20, 2007, 10:40 am
  • THE SOX WILL NOT LOSE TODAY! I GUARANTEE IT!!!!

    SF September 20, 2007, 10:41 am
  • Trisk:
That’s not a bad idea. But screw Giants games, we could just put that shirt up in about any team colors and sell it nation/worldwide.
    Spreadshirt, here I come!

    SF September 20, 2007, 10:42 am
  • By the way Trisk, I did thy to e-mail as you asked last night – not sure if you got it…

    IronHorse (yf) September 20, 2007, 10:45 am
  • I replied first thing this morning IH, you should have it, provided I sent it to the correct address.

Yankee Fan In Boston September 20, 2007, 11:05 am
  • What’s 5% of nothing, Trisk?
    We haven’t sold many shirts…

    SF September 20, 2007, 11:06 am
  • Only teasing, the saying on the shirt is more then enough payment for me!

    John - YF (Trisk) September 20, 2007, 11:08 am
  • I promise, if the Sox blow this division, I’ll be the first in line to get one, SF.

    Brad September 20, 2007, 12:03 pm
  • I don’t think I want people standing close enough to me to read that shirt right now.
