Todd Helton would still love to play for the Red Sox. According to a source familiar with the Rockies situation, the team would love to see the Red Sox rekindle talks for a deal that makes sense for both sides. Would Ramírez be a part of it, as he was when the deal was discussed in November? Probably not. But the Rockies love their young hitters, would like to make a move on Yankees righthander Carl Pavano, and need to dump some of Helton’s salary. "I think the Red Sox want to see Helton in spring training to make sure he’s all right from his [stomach problems] last year and to make sure his back is OK," said the source. "Helton in that lineup makes them unbelievable."
This From Nick Cafardo’s Sunday baseball column.   Could it be that the Sox get better, the Rockies’ payroll gets lighter, and the Yankees get rid of a pitching joke, all in one (or two) fell swoop(s)?

  • Again with Helton? Well, again I have to say this: DO IT.

  • With Helton making 16.6 mil. a year from 07-10, and 19.1 mil. for 2011, the Rockies will have to eat a ton of that contract before the Sox will bite. Especially with the ?s surrounding him at this point.

  • the key component of the latest Helton speculation is the phrase “the team [ed: the Rockies] would love to see the Red Sox rekindle talks for a deal”.
This has always been a deal driven by the Rockies, not the Sox. I don’t think the Sox will make any effort to further this deal without the Rockies knocking them out by either taking on a LARGE part of the contract, or asking for very little in return.

  • I heard an even dumber piece of speculation from Ken Rosenthal that the Sox would consider trading Jon Lester for Akinori Otsuka. The very idea makes me laugh.

  • What does Pavano have to do with this?

  • Rosenthal doesn’t actually speculate that, mouse. He says:
“Otsuka-for-Jon Lester surely would intrigue the Rangers”
Which you can file in the “uh, yeah” category.

  • Pavano figures in because there’s speculation that the Rockies want him, but need to clear Helton’s salary first, 10019.
