Mitchell’s Damocletian Sword Redux

On Wednesday we wondered here as to the effect of the Mitchell drug investigation this off-season, and why no paper seemed to be covering it. Today, as if on cue, the NYT chimes in with a piece by Michael Schmidt reporting that as many as 11 free-agents will be named in the report. The lead baseball story in the paper, with a big photo, was on the potential movement of Johan Santana, ostensibly to the Yankees. Also, MLBPA warned the league about potential collusive practices regarding a certain player, name undisclosed, but our guess is it’s the guy who opted out during the WS.

  • It is curious why this watershed moment in baseball (regarding the Mitchell investigation) is met with such indifference; maybe it is because to anybody on the outside of baseball, it smells like a telling of what everyone who was at the party will cop to regarding their involvement in the crack in the broken piece of glass on the mantle in the mansion.

  • YF:
This story was broken by the Globe, not the Times.
