Moose Call: O’s-Yanks Gamer I

What can you tell about a team from two games? After four, Sox fans are concerned about their team’s anemic offense, but one would think Boston will have plenty of offense this season. However, in these first two games, Yanks fans might be already witnessing in exaggerated form the problems that will plague the Bombers in 2007. The Yanks have put up enough offense. The problem has been on the run-prevention side of things, and most specifically the infield defense. As the Yanks’ roster is contructed, sloppy and aesthetically unpleasing games might be the norm this season, which is not to say the Bombers won’t win a lot. It’s just that, they’re going to win a lot of games ugly.

Tonight, one of the worst-run franchises in baseball comes to town. The Orioles do have an exciting trio of young starters, however, and one of them, Adam Loewen, starts tonight. The crafty veteran, Mike Mussina, counters for the Bombers. This is your game thread for comment. Go Yanks!

  • This kid almost no-hit the Yanks last year. Let’s hope for no E’s tonight and some sharp stuff from Moose.

  • Will be interesting to see what Moose we get. Last year he was a Cy candidate over the first half. This spring was decent, but not thrilling; was that a cagey vet holding back, or an older player being an older player. Whatever, it’s always interesting to watch Moose.

  • Roberts opens with a gapper into left center after Moose goes down 2-0. that second pitch looked like a strike to me. grr.

  • Hmmmm. Nice start by Moose.

  • Markakis 2 run double to right on a 3-2 pitch. Looked like a cutter, golfed to the corner.

    YF April 6, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Tejada 1st pitch swinging (not sure what he’s thinking) grounds 4-3. Markakis advances to 3rd w/ 1 out.

    YF April 6, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • Phelps makes a nice play on the dribbler up the 1b line, holds Markakis.

    YF April 6, 2007, 7:17 pm
  • Moose settles down and strands the runner at 3rd.

  • Loewen was tough on the Yanks last year, and then would get rocked by somebody else his next start. Hopefully that will change.

    Whatever April 6, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • The only good that came out of that inning is two ribbies for my fantasy team.

    bloodyank78 April 6, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • Fly to center ends the trouble. Damage contained. Not a great start for Moose. Let’s hope he settles down. The Mora hit was kind of flukey. Markakis hit a good pitch. The ball to Roberts caught too much of the plate on 2-0, but it shoulda been 1-1.

    YF April 6, 2007, 7:20 pm
  • Melky, hitting from the right, leads off vs. lefty Loewen. walks. nice.

    walein April 6, 2007, 7:24 pm
  • Not the best base-running.

    walein April 6, 2007, 7:25 pm

    Mora robs Abreu. Nice play.

    bloodyank78 April 6, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Walk to Millar after having him 1-2. That’s not good AT ALL.

    YF April 6, 2007, 7:31 pm

    bloodyank78 April 6, 2007, 8:56 pm

    SF April 6, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Yanks go quickly in the bottom of the 8th, 7 pitches…

    Hudson April 6, 2007, 10:13 pm

    bloodyank78 April 6, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • Ha. Seriously, are these guys so fragile, confidence-wise, that their teammates need to give them a “great job, guy!”, even when they line out routinely? It was weird.

    SF April 6, 2007, 10:15 pm
  • And that’s all she wrote folks, thanks Moose!

  • Jesus… someone give Sterling a drink..he sounds bummed.

    Buffalohead April 6, 2007, 10:36 pm
  • And most of the Northeast is pretty depressed right about now…half the rivalry questioning its offense, the other half its pitching. I like when the two teams are evenly matched, but not when it’s because both sides are playing like crap. Yuck.
Maybe all Tampa Bay needed to turn things around were Elijah Dukes, BJ Upton, and Delmon Young. Good for them…

    desturbd1 April 6, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • on a good note, the yankees bullpen had a good line last night…the yanks seem to be hitting enough to win, so that leaves starting pitching [opening for sf’s to say “i told you so”], defense [lack thereof], mental errors, and it just seems like they’re fresh out of intangibles…
