I’m actually a little surprised A-Rod hasn’t really gotten mentioned in the MVP debate. I mean, he clearly doesn’t have the season stats to get the award, but I’m not sure any other player has had such a dramatic impact on his team’s record.
Just think, if NY had gone their pace without Alex for the entire season, they’d only be 1.5 games up on Texas in the Wild Card chase and 6.5 games behind Boston in the division.
Mauer will, and should, get it. But hopefully, at least for YFs, this season will finally help prove just how valuable A-Rod is to this team.

Bill- I scrounged it together from Baseball Prospectus, mostly. They have “game logs” for the entire season.
And the Yankees are 8-4 in games when A-Rod has grounded into a double play.
And before anybody asks…
The Yankees are 10-7 in games when Jeter’s grounded into a double play.
Also, just for giggles- the Red Sox are 35-21 when Varitek gets a hit (.625), 25-24 when he doesn’t get a hit (.510), and 29-16 when he doesn’t play (.644).
In games against the Yankees, it’s 2-2 with a Varitek hit, 6-2 without a Varitek hit, and 1-2 when Varitek doesn’t play.
so….varitek is playing tonite, now he just needs to go hitless and the sox will walk with a win.
