Number 9: Sox-Tigers Gamer I

Schill hits the hill for a shot at win #9 on the year, and #201 for the career.  The Tigers’ momentum from last night’s victory over the Yankees’ bullpen will be stopped: they did lose 3 of 4 after all, their gaudy record the result of a weak division and overachievement.  The Tigers are this year’s Nats, I say. Remember all the hullaballoo last June about them, how they were "for real"?  They weren’t, and neither are the Tigers. The Sox need to go out this weekend and prove me right.

Chat away.

  • As an aside, Soxbaby just said “Papi” for the first time. Amazing.

    SF June 2, 2006, 6:34 pm
  • Not sure or not if that is better than Daddy

    Rob June 2, 2006, 6:36 pm
  • did he say that instead of saying “daddy” for the first time?

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 6:46 pm
  • No, “Dada” (as in me, not the art movement) has been in the vocab for several weeks. Next up? “Chowdahead”.

    SF June 2, 2006, 6:55 pm
  • I called my dad “Looouuuuuuuuuuu!!!!” when I was just weeks old.
    Pineilla was the greatest.

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 6:57 pm
  • I have been sitting here laughing myself over this “Looouuuuuuuuu!!!! crap.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:01 pm
  • Of cuorse my wife has noc lue on this. I had to break her on being a “Padres-swap meet” fan

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:01 pm
  • Obviously I can’t type either

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:02 pm
  • Nick’s first words were Bucky and Chambliss
(very precocious), numvers 9 and 7 respectively in the line-up that year.

    walein June 2, 2006, 7:04 pm
  • Coco at the top of the order, despite a certain Greek’s expertise there.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:08 pm
  • You think Theo passive-aggressively suggests Youk be at the top instead of Coco?

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • You mean Nick’s first words weren’t “slap a little more mozarell on that…”?

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • that was my first sentence.

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 7:10 pm
  • I think Theo calls up Tito and says “what the f*ck are you doing, you bald f*ck?”

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:10 pm
  • Funny, my first sentence was “I crapped myself”. I also might have said that at some point in college late at night, but can’t remember.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:11 pm
  • Kenny Rogers has 197 wins. Just a three win gap between him and Schill, but the only way Rogers gets to the Hall is if he hitchhikes to Cooperstown and crawls in through a shattered window.
Badump bum. I’ll be here all ze week.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:13 pm
  • that said, Kenny’s had a pretty decent career. It’s hard for us New Yorkers (Yanks and Mets fans) to conceive that he’s been good in other places.

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • Curtis Granderson’s bat is like Wily Mo’s, but if they split it into like 8 pieces.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:17 pm
  • The scouting report in Tigers’ TV on Schilling said, bulleted:
    – Ridiculous Splitter
    – Not so Good
I can’t hear the broadcast, but that at least seems like a reasonable assessment of at least 4 of his starts.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:18 pm
  • Placido Polanco’s head is a fascinating shape

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • And this one too. Sox already down 1-0.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • And I am off to a nice dinner out. Hopefully Schilling won’t continue to suck.

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:21 pm
  • If I don’t see a “Fire Millen” sign, I’m going to be mightily upset with the Tigers fans.

    Hunter June 2, 2006, 7:21 pm
  • Matt Millen is still employed? He must have some seriously compromising photos of Lions’ management…

    SF June 2, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • I just don’t get why the Sox pitchers feel it is necessary almost every game to spot the other team a lead.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:25 pm
  • Orioles up 1-0 on the Yanks.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:26 pm
  • Wright is throwing a bunch of WP’s early in the Y-O’s game

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:27 pm
  • I think Matt Millen, Jim Bowden, and Isaiah Thomas should be given control of the Royals team. It would be great, they wouldn’t win a single game! It would be the de facto worst team in American sports history.

    Hunter June 2, 2006, 7:27 pm
  • Hunter, I’d pay money for that to happen.

    Nick-YF June 2, 2006, 7:32 pm
  • A-fraud is sitting tonight with an upset stomach

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:37 pm
  • He got sick after seeing tonight’s lineup card, probably.

    yankeemonkey June 2, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • The bashing!

    walein June 2, 2006, 7:48 pm
  • I prefer intervention

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:51 pm
  • Crisp leads the inning off with another hit. Perhaps we can move hime forward this time.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 7:54 pm
  • Finally…..

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:01 pm
  • Another RBI for Ramirez

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:01 pm
  • Kenny Rogers just punched a guy in the face!

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • not really. I just wanted to revive the thread with a bang.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • What?

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • Don’t mess me up like that. I am only able to get this on gamecast. FSN has the Yanks and Os.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • This has been a slow game. Not much action so far.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:24 pm
  • Manny makes a surprisingly nice play, short-hopping a bullet line drive, and tumbling over as he does so.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:26 pm
  • I was wondering how that hit occurred.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • inge trying the bunt-and-run

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • Gamecast showed it as slow and looping to the outfield.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • 6th Strikeout of the game for Schil

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:29 pm
  • yeah, at first it looked like Manny just fell over while scooping up the ball, manny being manny etc. but on replay you could see that it was actually a nice scoop on a tricky hop that would have been a triple if it got past him.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:29 pm
  • schill in a jam here.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • looks like Schilling is playing around again. Another one of his innings where he just starts screwing up.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • That strikeout was his 80th pitch.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • Clutch K. Sox get a break as Varitek trapped a foul tip third strike, but the ump rules that he held onto it…
    Leyland calling the umps out.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:33 pm
  • Damn…

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • polanco RBI single. 2-1 Tigggggers

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • oooooo close call as Thames cranks one down the left field line, but foul by about 3 inches. would’ve been a double.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Finally out of the inning.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Crisp down….Loretta down.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • Kenny Rogers is mowing down batters like they were mere cameramen.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • Ortiz finds a way on base

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • LOL…must have jalapeno juice on his nose to get some extra movement.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • Manny’s getting closer

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • the sox are not pleased with the umpire. both crisp and manny had words for him after their K’s.

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:53 pm
  • Damn…..

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • Whew, I’m a little surprised Ramirez didn’t get tossed there.

    Hunter June 2, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • looks like a real low strike zone

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • that 3rd strike to manny was very very low

    airk June 2, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • I have CBS Sportsline going and Gamecast and they both showed it real low and in two different spots.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 8:57 pm
  • Schilling’s been given the same strike zone, however.

    Hunter June 2, 2006, 8:57 pm
  • I do not see Schilling in this game much longer. Already at 99 pitches.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:00 pm
  • Kenny Rogers’s nickname is The Gambler, because the other Kenny Rogers’s nicknamed the Gambler. That is dumb.

    Hunter June 2, 2006, 9:04 pm
  • I think that Chris Berman named him that. Not sure though. However Kenny “Dumb Ass” Rogers does have sweet ring to it.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • 5 Damn base runners all night. This is starting to get old.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:09 pm
  • Riske in the BP for us….Zumaya for them.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:10 pm
  • Youk mowed down.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • Someone in the lineup needs to man up.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Riske in the game…last time he was a base on balls clearing house.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:21 pm
  • Really infuriating game thus far.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • Well shock me….he got out of it.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • It’s past infuriating. No one wants to hit.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:26 pm
  • %^%#&%
MLB.TV just lost sat signal….from the detroit feed. dammit give me the NESN feed then :(

    TheTree1918 June 2, 2006, 9:27 pm
  • Whatever happens here…Cora PH-ing for Gonzalez is good.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:28 pm
  • Cora pitching for A-Gone

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:28 pm
  • humans should not throw 101 mph

    bigclo June 2, 2006, 9:29 pm
  • Does Crisp try to take 2nd?

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • Why did Lowell swing at the frist damn pitch?

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:34 pm
  • F***.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • All the way to the warning track for an out…..damn.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:37 pm
  • Seanez pitching….Tito just keeps kicking me in the jimmies.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • Man, I am just so mad right now. I’ve been downcast or sullen at Red Sox games this year. This is the first time I’ve actually hit things.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • i am actually locked in my garage….everyone has moved to the green zones in my house.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:41 pm
  • Glad I’m not alone, at least, Rob.
Okay. All right. Get this out. Then see what happens. Breathe (that last is more to me).

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:47 pm
  • Damn it! That’s the first error Youk has clearly deserved at 1st this year.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • Of course it would happen tonight. They have been pretty pathetic tonight and this just starts the icing.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:50 pm
  • One positive…..Baltimore is not going away easy to NY.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:51 pm
  • Well we slipped out of that inning.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • Todd Jones coming in to close

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • Least it didn’t cost them/us anything. Here’s the question that needs to be asked for a long time or until something changes: WHY THE F*** IS VARITEK BATTING 5TH?!
(That doesn’t preclude that he might help next inning, but come on…)

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • I just do not understand why we have Tek batting 5th. He is killing us in that spot. 0-3 tonight.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • I know…I was typing my comment at the same time. Maybe they are hoping that he will get the pitches in between Manny and Lowell and jump start his offense.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Baltimore down by one….one out and bases juiced.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • Baltimore just scored tying run.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:57 pm
  • We are just getting all of these pitches off Jones.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:57 pm
  • Tek….2 flyouts to right….a FC to short….and flyout to 3rd.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Lowell singles to center…

    Devine June 2, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Lowell gives us a stay of execution

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • youk, still my m’f’r

    bigclo June 2, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (*breath*) OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUK

    airk June 2, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • Willie “Was that a steal sign” running for Lowell

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • Youk hits a homer to left-center!!! My God! Papelbon…save us!

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • Thank god….some one finally manned up.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • I just screamed “Yes!” about a million times very loud. I can’t imagine what the people in the apartment upstairs must think.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • is Pap throwing in the BP yet?

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • My wife just asked me what the hell is wrong with me….dog crawled under the bed.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • Baseball swings you up and down so hard. The positive about being so angry earlier is that I’m now just as elated.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:04 pm
  • Please don’t blow this one Papelbon. It would be too much of an emotional rollercoaster.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:05 pm
  • K!!!!!!!!! two to go

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • papelbon with a nasty nasty nasty splitter for the K.

    airk June 2, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • I almost asked why Jones was closing with a 5.21 ERA last half-inning, then realized I shouldn’t be looking such a gift horse in the mouth.
    K! Groundout! Uno frickin’ mas!

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • 2 down…..

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • Pudge PH

    airk June 2, 2006, 10:08 pm

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:11 pm

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • hells yeah

    bigclo June 2, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • big win. a confidence-building win.

    airk June 2, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • yanks still tied in top of the 9th….

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • God damn Yankees just took the lead.
    Jeter

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:12 pm
  • Paps lowered his era from .033 to .032

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:13 pm
  • Lucky win tonight. No bats except Lowell and Youk in T-9th. This could have been real bad.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:17 pm
  • Schill should have gotten the win. Looked like the team thought Wakefield was pitching and they did not need to hit.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:19 pm
  • Oh it was an awful game by almost any standard as far as offense goes. But you do get that nice blast of adrenaline at the end of an almost-disaster like that. Who pitched the 7th again? Oh yeah, Riske. Good effort by the bullpen, especially Seanez who got a pop-up on a breaking ball after that awful error by Youk with 2 out (who immediately redeemed himself thereafter).

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • Yes…Youk did make up for it. The Riske/Seanez combo did not blow up again like it did in Toronto. They just seemed to not be able to get thier mind in the game at all.

    Rob June 2, 2006, 10:26 pm
  • I’m still mildly angry (as angry as I can be with a huge grin on my face) over that Manny “K” in the 9th when he about half-swung. That was an opportunity stolen by officiating. Making up for the “clearly should have been a K turned walk” on Ortiz earlier?

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:56 pm
  • It wasn’t in the 9th. It was in, say, the 6th or something.

    Devine June 2, 2006, 10:57 pm
