Oh, What a Night! (Doo-do-do-do-do)

No, it does not get any better Yankee fans. Our rookie sensations combine to shut down Cleveland. Mo seals it. Alex puts one over the moon. Multiple hits for The Captain. The Sox blow a huge late inning lead. Detroit blows a comeback lead. Seattle blows a lead. The Mets blow a lead. We are now tied for the WC lead. And to cap it all, the Pods have claimed Iggy Igawa off waivers. What are you waiting for? Go Buy Lotto tickets!

  • Oh my god. This has been such a good day. I just wish I were able to watch the game.

  • just a note: i don’t think iggy’s going anywhere. iggy is cheap for the next 4 years, and seeing as the yanks have already dropped 30 mil on him, unless the pods are going to give up something serious, i doubt he goes.
also. did i mention how awesome joba looked. lights out.

  • The one thing I never understood was the hatred of the Mets. They aren’t even an AL team. Who cares?

  • Boston hasn’t had two teams since forever. You wouldn’t understand. We hate them, just like White Sox hate the Cubs, and the Angels hate the Dodgers.

  • I’ve never heard Halos fans slagging off the Dodgers so you’re probably right: I wouldn’t understand. The ChiSox v. Cubs thing makes sense to me because it’s class based i.e. working class Southside vs. wealthy Northside. The NY “rivalry” just seems…well…petty. There’s this club which has had a ton of success and this red-headed stepchild of a club which seems to epitomize futility. Why would the successful club’s fans despise the runt-of-the-litter club and its fans? Are they a threat? Hardly. Bragging rights? Um…the record is pretty lopsided. Baldly stated, they do not represent a threat until the post-season, if even then. It’s obviously not a class thing so….what gives?

  • The only Angels fan I’ve heard hating on the Dodgers is the only Angels fan I know. So maybe I’m wrong, but there seems to be something there at least.

  • I don’t hate on the Mets. I kinda sorta root for them sometimes, even…guess that makes me a traitor in Yankeeville :'(

  • My take on the Yanks/Mets rivalry…for a while back there, the Mets were the toast of the town and the Yanks were just..toast. The Met’s WS win in ’69, going again in ’73; meanwhile the Yankees are stinking up the AL. So I think the rivalry really got going back then, with Yankees fans feeling like the “red headed stepchildren” were getting a bit big for their britches.
Personally, I think the Met’s ’86 victory was their finest, though. ;-)

  • I tend not to care about the Mets. The “rivalry” is more fantasy than reality.
Best result from last night – the newest nickname in Yanks-Sox lore: Gagme.

  • Mets fans seem more obsessed with the Yanks than Yankee fans do with the Mets, in my experience. But now I’m sounding like Bob Ryan…

  • Yanks fans began hating the Mets in the 80s, and specifically in 1986, when that truly hateful team had the city in the palm of its hand, everyone jumped on the bandwaggon, while yankee fans were stuck in the bitterest of steinbrenner’s meddling period, but with such a brilliant, hardnosed core (rickey, willie, donnie, winnie, pags….). times were tough for the yanks. i hate the mets less now, but those were bitter times. i got stuck rooting for the sox in a world series. that’s how much we hated the mets.

  • Growing up in the 80s, it was easy to hate the Mets as they dominated New York. But now every year I root for the Mr. Met and friends to make the playoffs, so we can have a recreation of the 2000 series. That victory parade was the best. Also, it’s fun getting Ron Darling to admit the Yankees are New York’s team.

  • True Yankee fans don’t root for the Sox unless it’s going to help the Yankees.

    Woosta YF August 11, 2007, 10:27 am
  • I agree with YF, a Yankee fan who went to school in the NY metro area during the 80’s had to endure a ton of abuse from Mets fans during their heyday (I remember the pre-homeroom arguments like they were yesterday). Now, the hatred of the Mets while not as acute is more of a reciprocal thing – where we hate them in response to their deep hatred of us…sort of the way that my hatred of the Red Sox grew in the 2003 timeframe.

  • I’m still giddy about last night; not because everyone else lost and Gagne looked awful (that’s a bonus indeed!) but just because this could prove an historic moment, the game we look back on ten years from now when we say about these guys, “Remember the game in Cleveland when they first pitched in a game together!” I know I’m being cheesy here, but it’s hard not to be excited.

  • It sucked. It sucked. It sucked.
It sucked, it sucked, it sucked.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 12:48 pm
  • As much as last night sucked (and suck it did), if the Sox win today and the Yanks lose, we’re back at Thursday. That would be fine by me.

  • I guess I’m younger, so actually I don’t mind the Mets, since I didn’t follow baseball until early 90s.
My family didn’t care much for baseball, so it was mildly amusing when I asked my dad for a Yanks hat, and he got a Mets hat. He still insisted it was by accident and didn’t know.
But in any case, I actually (passively) root for the Mets, unless it’s directly against Yankee’s interest (subway series, mostly). The fact is they don’t ever play each other, and I’m against the Subway Series on the principle that it’s a zero-sum game.
I was a roomie with two Mets fans, and they agree that I’m probably the best “Yanks fan” in terms of rooting for the Mets. But then I never lived through a period where the Mets were noticably better than the Yanks.
Of course, it was also sweet that when I was in high school, the Yanks won 3 out of the 4 years I was there. Especially sweet because I went to a high school a few blocks from city hall, and we got out for lunch to watch the parade (and many more cutted, naturally).

  • Oh c’mon SFs! Don’t tell me you wouldn’t be doing somersaults if places were switched last night.

    yankeemonkey August 11, 2007, 12:54 pm
  • Oh of course we would.

    Devine August 11, 2007, 12:59 pm
  • I have to agree, I don’t hate the Mets. I dislike the fans. Most Yankee fans are ok with the Mets, nothing compared to the Sox. But Met fans…uggh! They drive me bananas. They HATE the Yankees and honestly they should. Yankees rule NY and that’s not a cocky thing, it’s just the truth.
As for it being a good night…Yes, but it will be an even better Saturday if Cash can hammer out that Igawa deal!!!
