For some reason, today ESPN is reporting that Don Mattingly will be Joe Torre’s bench coach (and presumptive heir apparent) for next season. Seems like the Yanks already announced this, back in November. I guess they’re really, really excited about it. Also, Kevin Long, Triple-A batting coach, will be taking over Donnie Baseball’s vacant slot in the same capacity in the Big Leagues. Finally, the Yanks have acquired Cuban defector Juan Miranda, 23, a first baseman, for 4 years and $2 million. So he goes into the mix. Out of the mix is Brooklyn’s own Lee Mazzilli, who’s joining SNY as an analyst—thanks for the memories Maz, but in our minds, you’ll always be a Met. Sorry.
