Onward and Upward: Twins-Sox Gamer VI

Well, that’s over.

Jonathan Papelbon has presumably taken the Bud Light box off his head and retrieved his pants (we can’t say the same here at YFSF). The Sox have two games left, and one small bit of unfinished business to take care of — baseball’s best record.

All Boston has to do is win tonight and tomorrow, as they hold the tiebreaker over Cleveland. They’ll start with  Tim Wakefield, still seeking that elusive 17th win, which would tie a career high. He’s looked better the last two starts, and the optimist in us says Wakefield’s setting himself up for another four-start hot streak, beginning tonight. That sure would be nice. He faces Carlos Silva and the Twinkies.

Comment away!

The Globe reports Curt Schilling’s ben scratched from tomorrow’s start, indicating he’s likely to start Game 2 against the Angels. This is good, not least because he deserves it, and also because it gives Matsuzaka that much more rest before the postseason crunch.

  • I’m back from lurking; I haven’t been posting the past couple of weeks (mainly because it’s hard to post when you’re curled up in a fetal position in anxiety). I’m not usually superstitious, but I’ve been trying to find a combination of posting/lurking that will lead to Sox wins and Yankees losses. Now that the playoffs are here, I think I need to change it up now.

  • Im watchign two thigns and two thigns only in this game.
Wake to see if he’s refound his mojo.

  • I imagien any save chances these two days will go to Eric to ‘test’ him. I wont even feel any nasua for a change!

  • Nice to feel merely a mild annoyance at the opposition’s homer.

  • drews triple and youks double produce a run. still no one out.

    sf rod September 29, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • Ah, Drew has picked a fantastic time to remember how to hit. With a single and a triple today, he sports a .338/.456/.567 line in September, with 7 doubles, a triple, and 3 homers.
Wow. Mirabelli and Clayton are just the ultimate epitome of suck.

  • Poor Royce, he barely gets a chance to play and you can tell he’s all nerves.

  • Have to admit I had given up on J.D. Drew for this season (though not his Red Sox career). Nice to be proven wrong. Hope he has a great October, too!

  • Odd swing from Clayton

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:12 pm
  • Sox runs on 13 hits with no Papi and no Pedroia, with the bottom three spots taken up by Mirabelli, Clayton and Cora. Unshabby.

    Paul SF September 29, 2007, 9:14 pm
  • Six runs, that is. Okajima on for the save.

  • You know how “Cowboy Up” was the 2003 motto? and in 2004 was “The Idiots”?
I do beleive the theme of the 2007 Boston Red Sox to be “Pants Optional”

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:15 pm
  • s’ok Oki. Get it out of your system

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:17 pm
  • I need to make a 2007 Division Champ shirt that says Pants Optional on the back.
    Definatly. Must be done.

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:22 pm
  • WOW! What a Double play to win the game! Nice fielding Oki.

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • Just like he planned. Two singles to start, then the K and the DP to end the game!

    Paul SF September 29, 2007, 9:23 pm
  • I like that, Dio: “Pants Optional”

    Paul SF September 29, 2007, 9:24 pm
  • If the Indians lose, am I correct in figuring the Sox clinch the best record? One game up with one to play would mean the worst they could do is a tie, and the Sox own what I assume is the season series tiebreak.

    Paul SF September 29, 2007, 9:25 pm
  • Indians are losing 3-2 to KC in the 7th. If the score holds, the Sox clinch best record by virtue of the season series tiebreak.

    Paul SF September 29, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • You are correect sir

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:36 pm
  • Its a tale of two teams in Baltimore. Yankees ahd a frekaign 10-run inning (man the Os are abd to take the lead. Andy Pettite gvae up 9 runs, 8 earned over 5 however.
    11-9 now.

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:37 pm
  • Looks like Gobble is about to give the W to Cleveland. 1st and 2nd no outs. top of the 8th

    Dionysus September 29, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • Tie game. Oh well.. I really dotn care about Best Record. Division was wht I wanted and I got it.
And the World Series, of ocurse.

    Anonymous September 29, 2007, 9:44 pm
  • Royals escape a bases loaded one out nightmare. Tie game.
Meanwhiel.. Rockies are winning(!) That means TWO playoff spots are up in the air with FOUR teams vyign for them.. all comign down to the last day of the season.
WOW. Hows THAT for good baseball?

    Anonymous September 29, 2007, 9:58 pm
  • Royals take the lead back 4-3.
Tyign run (Roberts) on third with one out for the Os

    Anonymous September 29, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • Glad to see from the boxscore that Drew had the game winning HR. Hopefully the bad luck is behind him.

    rob September 29, 2007, 10:12 pm
  • Indians Lose. Red Sox are the best team in the regular season.

    Anonymous September 29, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • um…anyone watching this “presidential debate” on nesn? funny how something so dumb can damper an otherwise great weekend for the sox and their fans.

    sf rod September 29, 2007, 10:36 pm
  • Whoa. HFA clinched. Throughout playoffs. Won’t matter a damn if they can’t win the first series, but a nice little prize nonetheless.
