Pitcher’s Duel: Sox-Twins Gamer II

Last night’s debacle pushed the Sox to 6-8 in the 14 games since leaving Fenway on the abbreviated road trip. The Sox have certainly played no better than .500 baseball, and tonight, the hopefully reformed Matt Clement (5-4, 6.68) will try to stop the bleeding against Brad Radke (4-7, 6.17).

Looking at those ERAs, I’m going to go out on a limb and say we won’t be seeing a game in any way resembling last night’s.

Comment away!

  • Coco Crisp was pushed back to eighth in the batting order as Kevin Youkilis will return to the leadoff spot.
“It’s hard to ignore Youk’s onbase percentage,” manager Terry Francona said. “I think Coco, his feet are jumping around on him, is trying a little too hard.”
Francona said he still considered Crisp a leadoff hitter and didn’t know how long he would keep it this way.

    TheTree1918 June 14, 2006, 7:26 pm
  • Holy shit! Seeing that just made my night! Think Tito did this on his own, or did he get a call from the front office? Or did he read this blog? Hmmmm… :P

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • Teams hitting .424 against Radke in the first inning. Youk raises that with a leadoff single.

    SF June 14, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • Opponent BAA for Radke: .353

    SF June 14, 2006, 8:14 pm
  • Loretta looks at a horrible changeup, belt high. Manny and Papi lose that pitch.

    SF June 14, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • Ball drops between Bartlett and Kubel. First and second, one down. Let’s go, Manny boy.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:17 pm
  • Ortiz pops one up to Mount Olympus, lost in the roof. 1/2 one down. Lucky.

    SF June 14, 2006, 8:17 pm
  • Wow, (comment on wonders and ceasing)… I’m guessing this was a Theo move, but tomorrow I do expect a YFSF mention in the Globe and Herald…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:17 pm
  • Dinner time: light posting.

    SF June 14, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • Manny walks. Bases loaded.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:20 pm
  • i predict a bases clearing douyble

    TJ June 14, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Manny walks, bases loaded for Trot…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • Nixon pops up. Urgh.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • damn -_- he’s been poping out way too much lately

    TJ June 14, 2006, 8:22 pm
  • Gah, the popout to short! No advance, two down…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:23 pm
  • Tek leaves the bases loaded. Grr….

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:24 pm
  • Tek’s BA up to .258 now… Darn near respectable…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:24 pm
  • Why is this team absolutely incapable of scoring????

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:24 pm
  • Horrible.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:27 pm
  • I’ll bet $50 Castillo scores…to no one in particular…

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • I’ll take that bet ;-)

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:30 pm
  • Okay, so how about this Clement? I bet you $10,000 SOMEONE scores in this inning.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • Way to be negative, D. 2 outs, 0-2 count. We may get through this yet. Here’s hoping I didn’t just currse it.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:33 pm
  • You did, Laura… Now it’s 2-2

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:34 pm
  • Aw, jeez. Full count. I should just never open my mouth. Or, more accurately, type my thoughts.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • Clement gets ahead 0-2 and loses Cussyer… :-P

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • And he walks. Should I think negative thoughts now??

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • Cuddyer, sorry… Mistype..

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • What’s that batting avg for opponents in scoring position against Clement again?

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • Hey, look, no runs!

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • (Shhhh…it’s the negative mojo.)
I’ll bet you $1,000,000 you can’t get through six, Clement!

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Foulout ends the inning. Let’s actually use our opportunities this time, fellas!

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • This is totally irrelevant, but just for the record, I hate misquitos! They’re everywhere. And I’m all itchy yuck because of them.
    *end of rant*

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Rob, the answer would be: Matt Clement opponents’ average with RISP in 2006 — .434 with a 1.229 OPS…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • Those are some damn ugly numbers, Paul.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:43 pm
  • 53 AB, 35 RBI, 9 BB, 8 K…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • No joke…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • After the K fest last night I am not sure I am ready for those numbers Paul.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • The whole Matt Clement experience has been pretty damn ugly since the break last year, come to think of it.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • You know it is really sad when the hottest player we have had the last two night is Gonzo

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • The whole chin hair experiment has been the ugliest part of watching Clement in my opinion.

    Nick-YF June 14, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • AGon is blistering hot right now by his standards… Robbed of a four-hit night last night, 1 for 1 tonight…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:47 pm
  • Agreed, Nick. That was pretty grusome.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • Josh Beckett of late has been trying to mimic Clement — in pitching and in facial hair. I like neither… I thought the beard was very cool…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • Exciting and fun! I love leadoff walks to opposing batters!

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • 2 innings = 2 lead off batters on base.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • Clement want to put them in scoring position so he can try and cut down on that awful average they have.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • Jason Kubel is satan!

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:53 pm
  • Kubel is starting to piss me off.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:53 pm
  • His first name is Jason, right?

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • You get that ball rolling, Clement! I want more of this!
God, I’m glad I’m not actually watching this.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • It’s not Kubel… Our pitching staff is Satan!

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:55 pm
  • Orc last night and his little buddy Frodo throwing the meatball tonight.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • We should still have the lead… That’s the frustrating part…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 8:57 pm
  • To be fair, I’m pretty sure we’re gonna score some runs tonight, too. It’s just that Clement’s been kicking me continuously in the crotch for almost a year now…

    Devine June 14, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • Nice LOTR reference, Rob. My two favorite things (fantasy and baseball) all rolled into one.

    Laura June 14, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • Knowing Gameday, I bet Manny’s pissed with that strike call.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 9:03 pm
  • Thanks Laura

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • On the upside, that AB brings Radke to 60 pitches.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 9:08 pm
  • Well a positive note, radke has thrown 60 pitches through 3 innings.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:08 pm
  • Amazing how every week we make a certain starter with bad stats look like the MVP of the WS.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:09 pm
  • It’s really frustrating at this point… John Wasdin, Brad Radke… What happens to our hitters when runners are on base?

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:10 pm
  • Great – I tune back in and Matt Clement looks like he’s about to cry.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:14 pm
  • Clement losing control…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • 23 strikes, 31 balls.
    Special.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • Theo appears to better at trading for pitching than signing it.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:16 pm
  • Back to back walks…..great

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • “No activity in the Boston bullpen”.
    How can that be?

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:17 pm
  • The trifecta of walks!!!!

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Back to back to back. Warm someone!

    Devine June 14, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Tito stares into the distance, that blank stare giving away nothing…
Walked loaded, and still no action. WTF.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Clement’s now walked the bases loaded… There better be someone already up in tyhat bullpen…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Tito = genius. I, on the other hand, am a moron.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:18 pm
  • Tell me he got the DP!
It’s the old “out(s) recorded” bit on Gameday.

    Devine June 14, 2006, 9:19 pm
  • Wow, the double play… Last thing I expected to see…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:19 pm
  • Both at 60 pitches…Radke’s strike total (38), you know, a trifle more acceptable than Clement’s (25).

    Devine June 14, 2006, 9:20 pm
  • Go ahead and swing at another first pitch Tek.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • Now we;’re breaking out the first-pitch-swinging tune… This is becoming repetitive…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:22 pm
  • 60 pitches in three innings? We can fix that, let’s swing at everything!
The Sox haven’t been this frustrating since the first half of 2004, when they looked like dead-enders.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • There’s always hope. That’s what I keep telling myself. The Sox looked like crap in 04…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:25 pm
  • They just had better pitching in 04…at least D-lowe showed up every other start.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:27 pm
  • Nice – got a guy 1-2 and you hit him.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:29 pm
  • I dunno about that Rob. D-Lowe was retched pretty much until October. The problem was Schilling and Pedro showed up for every start. This year, we have Schilling and Wakefield, but no offense for Wake…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:29 pm
  • And it was Rondell White and his sweet stroking .189 average on top of it.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:30 pm
  • Yeah D-Lowe was pretty bad that year. I just think he was better then than Clement is for us now. Clement just cannot think straight. Beckett has started drinking out Clements water bottle.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:31 pm
  • Seemed like the middle relief was better also. The one caveat to that is ours is pretty good until we use certain player combinations prior to Paps.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • Clement is just a coward. I have no other good way to describe watching him. You can just see how he has no confidence, how every little thing just breaks him down. I hate watching him pitch, on every level: there’s no artfulness, and in the absence of that you at least want tenacity, of which he has none.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • More trouble…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • And I posted that before the Castillo double. Good night everyone – sleep is just more important to me than this game.

    SF June 14, 2006, 9:33 pm
  • Right SF…

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:34 pm
  • Yanks head into the 9th leading 6-1

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:35 pm
  • Covelli!

    airk June 14, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • What was that Crisp just did? A homer?

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • Yeahp… And Youk doubles after the AGon K…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:41 pm
  • I can never tell what the hell’s going on with any ball hit at the baggie. home runs and doubles all look the same.

    airk June 14, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • Two flyouts end it… Another runner in sscoring position with fewer than two outs… Another run stranded at the same base…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:45 pm
  • Here comes the meat wagon to the mound again.

    Rob June 14, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • Clement 6th walk.

    airk June 14, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • now Clement leaving with a right arm injury.

    airk June 14, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • Another four-pitch walk… Geez…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:54 pm
  • If we made a list of all the pitchers the Sox have on the active roster who should never pitch for us again, we’d have to start forfeiting games…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:55 pm
  • Van Buren’s on! Makes me smile: :-D

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • it would seem as though Clement is headed toward the DL.

    airk June 14, 2006, 9:57 pm
  • JVB gets the job done. Oh, how I would have loved to say that last night….

    airk June 14, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Hey, will you look at that? A popup in a high-pressure situation! Jermaine Van Buren = Not Julian tavarez.

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Manny with leadoff walk — something’s gonnna happen here, I can feel it!

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • Well, something sure did happen all right… A double play… :-(

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • yeah, that DP really really sucked.

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • I count 6 rings. Yawn.

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:16 pm
  • I still count zero Yankee rings in the 21st century, Joe. Sorry.

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:17 pm
  • Uh oh, walk puts 2 on, 0 out…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:18 pm
  • Bad mojo here…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:21 pm
  • JVB gives up 11th Twin walk of the game. this is freaking ridiculous.

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • This has really turned ugly…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:25 pm
  • no wait — 11 can’t be right. maybe I mis-heard Remy.

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:26 pm
  • I only count nine… But at this point, who cares?

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:26 pm
  • 9 walks, 1 HBP

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:26 pm
  • noooooooooooooooooo

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • Wow.
    Wow.
    Wow.
    Wow.

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • I guess Jermaine wasn’t ready for the show after all…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • hey, how about following up a grad slam with another goddamn walk?

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Oh, that was Delcarmen, following the Grand Slam with the four-pitch walk… It’s just all falling apart this series, isn’tit?

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • ’tis

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • Delcarmen recovers for the final two outs, but boy, this game went from furstrating-but-winnable to harrowing…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:33 pm
  • Another double play…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • Well, good night everybody… I tried to stay to the end, but I couldn’t…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:43 pm
  • hopefully, this marks the low point. Jon Lester’s next couple starts take on even more significance with Clement probably headed to the DL soon and the relievers finding creative new ways to blow. Our problems with the bullpen will be concealed if we can add another dependable starter.

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:44 pm
  • g’night paul

    airk June 14, 2006, 10:44 pm
  • Trade, Theo, trade! Zito or Willis, coming here, I think…

    Paul SF June 14, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • It has become truly dispiriting to watch the Sox lately.
The Sox aren’t driving in runs.
And we have nothing on the pitching side all of a sudden except Schilling, sometimes Beckett, Timlin and Papelbon.
(Can anyone truly defend the Arroyo trade now? I’ve come to like WMP, but the Sox pitching is so atrocious on every level that one hopes Theo has learned once and for all: You can never, never have enough pitching.)

    Hudson June 14, 2006, 10:47 pm
  • i will defend the trade, WMP has soo much upside mediocre end of the rotation starters are a dime a dozen, and yes Arroyo is a mediocre back of the rotation guy. Lester, Pauley and even Hansen have more upside in the Sox rotation now then Arroyo would.
