Superbly pitched games are the best…slow steady ratcheting up of tension, solid D. I’ve only caught the last couple innings but this seems to be a great one.
6 combined hits between these 2 teams in the bottom of the 11th. Crazy.
This is a scintillating exercise in mutual offensive ineptitude.
I stopped watching so I could catch the Breaking Bad season premiere and couldn’t believe no one had scored still when I switched back. Well, I can believe Beckett. But Niemann and both bullpens are really showing up.
I gotta work a full day then get to DC tomorrow. Why am I still up???? These are not my teams. I am happy to have the rays arms wiped out the night before the Yanks open a 4-game set, but mainly I’m up because this game is a lot of fun to watch – especially if you’re NOT rooting for one of these teams. Aceves in — that’s a pretty good arm to go to in the 13th.
6 combined hits, bottom of the 15th.
Aceves dealing beautifully (including a 5-pitch 14th) and now back-to-back HBPs. Rays get someone on 2nd base for only the 3rd time tonight, which is amazing (no Ray has reached 3rd, while the Sox also have only 3 H but also 15 LOB)
Top of the 16th. Rays bringing in their last pitcher. Sox still have Aceves on something like 26 pitches, Papelbon in the pen, and who knows who else.
ANOTHER BB. The Red Sox have had guys all over the basepads. Reddick to 2nd on the sac bunt by Varitek, who seems to be limping pretty clearly. Scutaro up.
Wow. Chopper fumbled by Rays, reddick almost caught off 3rd, rays almost throw it away. A long fly ball would score the go-ahead run…but Ellsbury hits a very shallow fly. 2 out.
Pedroia singles in Reddick. He has THREE hits on a 16-inning night when his team has a total of 4. Great night for him.
Wow – A-Gon hits one to the wall that Zobrist catches. Thought that was the killer. But Sox have papelbon now with the 1-run lead and a Rays offense whose confidence level at this point has got to be in the basement.
Oops – sox have 5 hits not 4 — 2 in the 16th…
2 outs and the 0-for-5 Brignac is flailing at Papelbon’s 96-mph fastballs. And that’s the game on a great play by gonzalez. Congrats SFs. What a marathon. Hope the rays are wiped!
Hell of a game. Like Dusty I switched over to the Breaking Bad premiere and missed a big chunk of the game, and went to bed as soon as they went into extras. I hate to see such a great Beckett outing wasted, though.
I mean it’s wasted in the sense that Beckett didn’t get the win.
What a pleasant surprise to wake up to this. I dozed off after the 11th inning, listening in bed, after the Sox blew the bases loaded/no out situation, and just assumed that was the proverbial straw. Nice win, and beautiful stuff from Beckett.
Pedey is playing like an MVP again. He’s been incredible.
Thanks Sox for blowing out the Rays bullpen for this evening!

That was my second reaction (after relief that I didn’t stay up until 1 a.m. for nothing) after the game was over. The Yankees should be grateful to the Sox for that game. :-)
I am. We need all the help we can get at this point…hopefully we bury them and make this a two pony race for the rest of the year. Well, get them out of our Wild Card chase anyway.
