Ready, Set, Go! Yanks-Chisox Gamer I

Twenty-one games in twenty days. And today is game 1, day 1. I feel like Oliver Stone on the set of The Doors and you fellow Yankees fans are my actors and we’re in the desert about to go on a long journey, a long journey to a place in our minds we’ve never been. The Native American man will be our guide. The cacti: our stars. The sand: our sky…Right…. I’m in an odd mood today. It’s the excitement and the nervousness leading up to this unbelievably challenging stretch for the Yanks. But to calm my nerves a bit, the Yanks begin the first series of the run with their 3 best best pitchers. Tonight the brilliant and young Chien-Ming Wang brings his ground-ball show to Chicago’s South Side. The ChiSox counter with Freddy Garcia who has been struggling of late. Let’s hope his struggles continue. This is your thread for comment. And with that, the marathon begins…

  • Who to root for? The Yanks, who can dent the White Sox’ WC chances? Or the Chisox, who can make our hated Yanksfan brethren feel pain? My head is spinning. Can both teams lose?

  • yes, i’d like to invoke the “meteor hits the stadium” option here.

  • Welcome back Robi!

    YF August 8, 2006, 5:30 pm
  • Having watched Freddy Garcia (and recently dropped him from my FT) I can definitively say that he should be destroyed by the Yankee hitters tonight.

    walein August 8, 2006, 5:39 pm
  • Whoa, look at that line-up! Makes me smile.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 6:01 pm
  • This is one of those where I can be happy whichever team wins (although more happy with a ChiSox win) because either way it helps the Red Sox.

    Paul SF August 8, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • E8. There’s a change from last year….

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:09 pm
  • ABREOOOOOOOO! 1-0.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • How did Damon come around to score on a single. Wasn’t he on first?

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • never mind, I see that he had stolen a base. My bad.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:13 pm
  • A-Rod walks. Runners at furst and second. 1 out for Giambi

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • Podesenik gunned down at third by Robi! Welcome back indeed!
Close call on the tough play….

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:26 pm
  • Dinger for Craig WIlson after Robi almost takes an offspeed pitch out….. 2-0.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • These new guys rock.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • Good point BY. 2 rbi’s for Cash’s pickups. How many rbi’s do Theo’s pickups have? Oh. None. Really? He didn’t HAVE any pickups?! Oh.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:31 pm
  • No call for that….

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:32 pm
  • The real question is are we going to regret not picking anyone up for this season?

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:33 pm
  • Wang staying high in the strike zone. Podsednik hurt him with a leadoff 2x in the first. Now Konerko does the same in the 2nd.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:33 pm
  • YF, as Seth Mnooking pointed out the important thing is that Theo’s process (that lead to nothing) was respected during the trade deadline.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:35 pm
  • Dye doubles in Konerko. Pitch still a bit high, and over the plate. Wang’s scoreless inning streak ends at 19. Couldn’t last forever.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • Nick….to hell with Mnooking. I wanted somebody. Sign the drunk on the monster for bullpen help.

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:36 pm
  • Wang’s balls flying in the air. Never a good sign.
    the imagery is disturbing.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • WSox score a run to make it a little more interesting.

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • WSox score a run to make it a little more interesting.

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • Nick: Totally. I respect their process. I enjoy our wins.
Thought this isn’t going so well. A walk from Wang. Don’t see too many of those.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • Sorry…double post.

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • Sinker not sinking today.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • Hard line single for Crede to right. Bases loaded.
Wang not getting balls on the ground.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • well, this is turning out bad. Uggh. Bases load, no outs.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:40 pm
  • Sweet Lord, that was beautiful!!

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • 1-2-3! DP

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Credit where it’s due: great analysis from Leiter, who’s found the hitch in Wang’s delivery, and noted the DP was in order.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:42 pm
  • so, who’s announcing the game? I heard Kay got himself in some hot water recently.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • Rag on Theo Epstein all you want, but his program is his program, and it’s completely ridiculous to judge it one week after a trading deadline, since it’s professed to be about long-term contention and success over the course of several seasons. We’ll just assume YF is being humorously shallow for the moment.

    SF August 8, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • Crap. Looping single from Cintron on 3-2 scores 2. Joe out of the dugout (?). The pitch was low, but Wang had been up in the zone during the ab. Something nor right. Not sure what Joe is arguing about.
Announcing team: O’Neill, Kay, Leiter. Hopefully Kay avoids the Holocaust references during this bad inning for the Yanks.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • Michael Kay is an assclown, I wonder if his holocaust and slavery tirade had anything to do w/Singleton’s one man show the other day.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 8:49 pm
  • ??
What does that mean, YF? Is Mel Gibson in the booth?

    SF August 8, 2006, 8:49 pm
  • A Joke! Don’t pull a Beth.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:50 pm
  • What, the holocaust thing? What’s funny about the holocaust? ;-)

    SF August 8, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • YF August 8, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • I’m not sure SF heard about Kay’s comments recently. He compared some baseball issues to the holocaust and slavery. It was an odd analogy that didn’t quite fit the discussion on sports radio.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • I gotta listen to this. Sounds like gold!

    SF August 8, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • Abreu is killing the ChiSox. Let’s bring ’em home, fellas.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:53 pm
  • A-Rod with the (dare I say) go ahead homer!

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • When Arod connects w/those long ass arms he generates so much f’ing power it’s unreal.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • Just Like THAT. ALEX! 4-3.

    YF August 8, 2006, 8:54 pm
  • I just listened to that….this guy is a future Darwin Award winner and does not know it.

    Rob August 8, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • I hope Wang settles down next inning. I’m about to head out to me brother Walein and watch the game . Have a good night guys.

    Nick-YF August 8, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • Jeez, WTF was Kay talking about?

    SF August 8, 2006, 9:05 pm
  • Wow, I am re-listening to Kay and, but for the fact that he’s not paid to think about anything, it’s still shocking to hear him go off on this random tangent.

    SF August 8, 2006, 9:13 pm
  • Crack kills

    Rob August 8, 2006, 9:15 pm
  • Crede. Grr. Foursies.

    YF August 8, 2006, 9:24 pm
  • And now Crede with the sweet back-to-the-plate grab.
    2xGrr.

    YF August 8, 2006, 9:31 pm
  • Wily Mo Pena just hit a homer that went about 450 feet and was never more than 25 feet off the ground.
Just thought I’d let everyone know.

    SF August 8, 2006, 9:32 pm
  • Another K for Lester on the tough fastball crossing the plate to the inside.

    SF August 8, 2006, 9:42 pm
  • Villone on. Thome out.

    YF August 8, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • C-M Dubs, you are still my homeboy.

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 10:15 pm
  • All right Myers, let’s see us pay you to get an out that’s not named Ortiz.

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 10:16 pm
  • JORGIE!!!!!

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 10:18 pm
  • Posada’s defense is off the hook this year. The percentage on guys running on him successfully must be way down.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:20 pm
  • Bases juiced for Giambi.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:31 pm
  • Ouch. RBI the hard way. Let’s go Jorge.

    YF August 8, 2006, 10:35 pm
  • I’ll take it, go ahead Jorgie, hit me a Grand Slam.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:36 pm
  • Damn, nice rally killer Jorgie.
    Who’s comin’ in, Farns, Proctor?

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:37 pm
  • Jorge! Taketh away and giveth back. Hard to get just one there.
The good news: Alex looks locked in. Could be bombs away for a month. That would be very, very good indeed.

    YF August 8, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • Farns! Well rested.

    YF August 8, 2006, 10:40 pm
  • WHERE WAS THAT?????

    YF August 8, 2006, 10:41 pm
  • Robi!

    YF August 8, 2006, 10:41 pm
  • Popped him up!

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • Farns v. Thome, interesting at bat…

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • Got him!!! 1-2-3 for Farns, who I must say has been looking very sharp as of late.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:48 pm
  • Double for Robbie.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:51 pm
  • Cano goes oppo so well, he just shot that ball over Crede’s head.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:52 pm
  • Jenks coming in, I would love to see Melky smoke one off him.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 10:55 pm
  • All on Mo now.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 11:00 pm
  • Konerko ties it of Mo, shit; what can you do? We can still win this son of a bitch.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • Konerko. Ugh. Mo left one out over. Fives.
    And a single for Dye.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • oh god damn it

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 11:07 pm
  • POsada!

    Oy! August 8, 2006, 11:11 pm
  • Nice job Jorge!

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:11 pm
  • Ugh. Alright. Get one back here in the 10th, let Mo close it down for good.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:12 pm
  • Jorge has gunned down 3 tonight, vastly helping Yankee pitchers in getting outs.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 11:14 pm
  • sorry captain…

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 11:16 pm
  • Konerko again. Someone get that guy!

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:16 pm
  • Abreu ks after a bad call.
    Alex walks.
    This ump blows.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:20 pm
  • Come on Graybeard, big at bat.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 11:20 pm
  • SB for Alex! Great play, though Bernie looks lost against the heat from Jenks.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:21 pm
  • SB for Alex! Great play, though Bernie looks lost against the heat from Jenks.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:22 pm
  • And he Ks. Not a good situation for Bernie.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:22 pm
  • No suprise there, no f’ing way Bern is catching up w/a 97mph fastball at his chest.

    bloodyank78 August 8, 2006, 11:23 pm
  • Wow. Proctor on fire. Sure does help when he has a couple days off.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:32 pm
  • Cano!!! 3 hits! GET HIM HOME___

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:35 pm
  • Royals about to blow a 2 run lead in the 9th to the Sox. 2 on for Manny w/ 1 out.
Stray pickoff throw puts Cano on 2nd.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:36 pm
  • Wilson Ks on the slider. (And Manny Ks in KC–2 outs)

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:38 pm
  • Crap. Leche down 5-3. If Yanks are to win, they’re gonna need someone in the 12th. For now, Proctor returns to the hill.
    Sox lose.

    YF August 8, 2006, 11:42 pm
  • god damn you, jenks.

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 11:42 pm
  • Youk grounds out!

YF in DC August 8, 2006, 11:43 pm
  • Sox lose, deservedly. Playing about as bad as any team in the Majors. Yanks could be up by 5 or 6 come the YFSF field trip. At least Joe Lieberman lost tonight as well.
    G’night!

    SF August 8, 2006, 11:45 pm
