Red Sox Vs. Devil Rays – September 22nd

Trying to get this up quickly so some of you die hards don’t go through withdrawal!  Your beloved Sox are in Florida to take on the Devil Rays.  Youk is out of the lineup once again and Gorden Edes is reporting even though X-Rays came negative, it could be a few days before he’s back in the lineup.  Also much to YFSF regular Brad’s dismay, Manny is once again on the bench.  Enjoy the game!

  • Lowell on board with a nice single; Drew up.

  • lowell with a solid at bat, drives a 3-2 letter high fastball into center for a leadoff single.

  • Lowell singles, making everyone regret the Papi-stealing-3rd fiasco of last inning.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • yanks win. thanks toronto.
and then hinske grounds into a double play on the first pitch. thanks again toronto.

  • Melky singles in the winning run for the Yanks.
Varitek walks, and then Hinske pulled a GIDP. Sigh.

  • Lugo looks sharp tonight. Hope I didn’t just jinx him.

no sleep til brooklyn SF September 22, 2007, 7:45 pm

    Way to play small-ball guys.

  • Jacoby singles! Crisp scores.
    Small ball = woot.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 7:58 pm
  • remy says lugo was bunting on his own there. either way it payed off.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 7:59 pm
  • Well it’s a win-win–Lugo moves the runner over, and maybe gets a single in the process. Good call by Lugo.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 8:00 pm
  • Ortiz grounds out.
By the way, the Angels lost today and Cleveland is losing 2-0 to the A’s.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 8:02 pm
  • no way jacoby steals with papi up. papi will do it to lowell though. and mike had two strikes on him at the time too.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 8:04 pm
  • Exactly sf rod. One thing I HATE to see is Ortiz leading off an inning.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 8:05 pm
  • Daisuke looking very solid. 40 pitches after 3 innings, 2 K’s and 0 BB’s.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 8:08 pm
  • Nice inning by Matsuzaka there.

    Brad September 22, 2007, 8:09 pm
  • daisuke has looked strong so far tonite. i guess that means he’ll have to try to make one run hold up.

  • drews double plates lowell. drew advances on a pass ball. tek baltimore chops one over penas head to drive home drew. 3-1 sox.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 8:17 pm
  • um…who the hell had hinske and tek involved in a hit run play. hinske cant hit and tek can’t run.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 8:21 pm
  • Very convincing HR for Pena. Yikes.

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • oh dear. Is this dice k’s meltdown inning?

  • Matsuzaka comes through with a K, after disagreeing with a call. This is encouraging.

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 8:53 pm
  • it’s amazing how daisuke can look almost pedroesque at times. it’s gotta be the elbow jerking motion on his change.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 8:55 pm
  • Lowell on base AGAIN. Can we sign him to a series of one year contracts to ensure similar production in the future?

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 8:58 pm
  • maybe drew has found himself. 10th homerun on the year comes with a man on. 5-2 sox.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • 2 run HR for Drew!!!
(Bringing him to 10 on the year. Sigh.)

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 9:01 pm
  • Wil Nieves would probably find himself against the SatanFish pitching…

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 9:06 pm
  • Why is Matsuzaka still in there?

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 9:46 pm
  • asdlkfhahjsgd

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 9:51 pm
  • @yankeemonkey – because this is what happens when you take him out. :/

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 9:52 pm
  • Jackie, I am coming around to your thinking on the whole Bucholz thing. As a Yankees fan I am happy to see the merry-go-round of 7th/8th inning futility, but if I were a Sox fan I think I would be screaming for him to at least get a shot at one of these late-inning relief situations. Not meant as a troll SFs, really.

    IronHorse (yf) September 22, 2007, 9:54 pm
  • Wow, today is like a collective exercise in futility for both of our teams’ pitching…

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:00 pm

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:01 pm
  • Gagne truly is the Red Sox version of Farnsworth. Put him in a non-pressure situation and he’s fine. But give him a lead and watch it evaporate.

    AndrewYF September 22, 2007, 10:11 pm
  • No kidding. There must be a no 1-2-3 innings clause in his contract or something.

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:13 pm
  • IH – I just want them to pick a role for him and stick to it! I gotta say, I did not anticipate needing him in the bullpen… we have enough “good arms” out there, they just all seem to be, uh, not good lately.

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:18 pm
  • At any rate, next year is going to be very, very fun with all our young pitchers getting starts.
Oh, shit. Al Reyes in. Game over, Boston wins.

    AndrewYF September 22, 2007, 10:19 pm
  • Not sure that you want to stick a kid into a situation like that this late in the season…Does he have any experience relieving at all, let alone in late high leverage situations?

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:20 pm
  • Hahahahaha, oh my fricking Lord. Can Al Reyes suck against the Red Sox ANY MORE?
    Jesus christ.

    AndrewYF September 22, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • Tek!

    DW-sf September 22, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • Tek HR to tie it up! Baseball is hilarious today.

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:21 pm
  • ym – he’s pitched in at least one game out of the pen… can’t remember what the situation was. But my point is it seems weird to have him starting and then coming in in relief, and then starting again, and then (presumably) pitching in relief in the postseason.
Hinske with a double, which is good because I don’t really want this to go to extra innings.

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:23 pm
  • Hahahahahaha. Ha.

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:23 pm
  • Jackie, yeah I remember him pitching out of the pen once or twice. But wasn’t it more like a long-man role, not necessarily a setup guy? That’s probably a bit different.

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:26 pm
  • I love me some Reyes. I see him and I get all tingly.

no sleep til brooklyn SF September 22, 2007, 10:28 pm
  • 2 run HR for Lugo! (*pinches self*)

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:28 pm
  • Has Reyes saved even one game against the Sox this year? If Gagne is a Yankee mole, Reyes must be a Red Sock mole.

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:31 pm
  • welcome to the postseason, you ’07 redsox you.

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 10:31 pm
  • ym – that’s true. I had been saying that I’d like to see him take Wakefield’s spot in the rotation, and have Wake (and his infinitely available arm) for whatever sort of relief is necessary. But that might just be crazy talk, especially with his innings limit.

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:32 pm
  • Gagne is gunna get the win. Wow.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 10:38 pm
  • There’s no justice.

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:39 pm
  • Congratulations sox fans. With the Detroit loss, this makes it official for you doesn’t it? Or do you need 1 more?

    IronHorse (yf) September 22, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Game over. Thank god.

  • Yup. IH, it’s official. Thanks for the congrats… given that your magic # is four, I’m sure I’ll be able to return them soon. Much to my dismay. ;)

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:46 pm
  • That would be a magic number of 3, thankyouverymuch >:)

    yankeemonkey September 22, 2007, 10:48 pm
  • Gagne gets the win AND we get a playoff birth, all in the same night. Craziness.

    Atheose September 22, 2007, 10:49 pm
  • Sorry ym! (Yahoosports says 4, must not be updated yet…)

    Jackie (SF) September 22, 2007, 10:53 pm
  • i just got champaign in my eye. it’s times like these that make me think of our smallest red sox fan, nelson (RIP).

    sf rod September 22, 2007, 10:59 pm
  • BAck from work. Good to see we won! Playoffs here we come! BOOYA!
I have a bottle of champagne but Im saving it for if we clinch the division.

  • Also.. Ellsbury got two more hits today. Which makes him having a hit iin 19 of 20 games since being calle dup. If he isnt the Rookie of the Month in the AL, it’ll be a crime
If he doesnt start next year, I will SLAUGHTER the front office

    Dionysus September 23, 2007, 12:22 am
  • Tek, Lugo and Drew all homer in the same game.
    The end is near.

  • And suddenly the Sox have the best record in baseball again…

    Hudson September 23, 2007, 1:08 am
  • Best record thanks to Al Reyes!

    Sam-YF September 23, 2007, 9:25 am
  • Nice to be on top of the world again.
Some questions now that we can look ahead to the playoffs:
    1) Who’s the second starter? Got to be Schill, right? But then Mats for what could be a pivotal Game 3?
    2) Jells over Coco?
    3) To Buck or not to Buck?
