Red vs. Black: All-Sox ALDS Game 1 Thread

Hey, finally we’re playing a team in the postseason that we can pick on with an asinine chant.  So here goes: "1917 duh duh duh duh duh…1917".  You get the idea.  Consider this your afternoon’s game thread, up until the time it is supplanted by YF’s "Halos Shmalos" evening matchup discussion.

  • Contreras. Sock it to ’em.

  • Konerko! Rowand! Off to a nice start. 2-0 Chi.

    YF October 4, 2005, 4:37 pm
  • Pierzynski! 5-0.

    YF October 4, 2005, 4:39 pm
  • Clement getting shelled. 5-0.

    Spidey October 4, 2005, 4:39 pm
  • This is crazy. Why can’t Francona have Red Sox pitchers throw batting practice BEFORE the game? Just to get it out of their system so we’re not throwing BP in the first couple of innings. Why has nobody considered this option?

    DaJonz October 4, 2005, 4:41 pm
  • Wow, Clement hit two batters in the bottom of the first inning.

    Joe October 4, 2005, 4:43 pm
  • Clement should probably not start another game of the post-season. The guy lost something when he got hit in the head in Tampa. He hasn’t been the same pitcher since.

  • Blech. At least I don’t feel like I missed anything by having to be at work. Just need 1 of 2, so either a big comeback today or win tomorrow, no biggie.
(Nick may be right, maybe Clement can get a phone number from A-Rod?)

  • The only good thing is:
THANK GOD CLEMENT WASN’T STARTING A WINNER-TAKE-ALL PLAYOFF GAME.

    SF October 4, 2005, 4:58 pm
  • Konerko. Piling on. Keep ’em coming.

    YF October 4, 2005, 5:16 pm
  • Goddamnit. Is it just cause they’re slow, or is there something else about the RS baserunning?
Oh, and I’m liveblogging over at http://www.hiddenrebelbase.net if anyone wants to join in the discussion over there.

  • PULL CLEMENT OUT NOW!!!!!!!!

    Kat October 4, 2005, 5:38 pm
  • You mean, Clement is still pitching!?
    Francona is brain dead.

    SF October 4, 2005, 5:41 pm
  • Pierzynski’s double to lead off the 4th should have been Clement’s last pitch. Inexcusable delay by Francona.

    MJL in L.A. October 4, 2005, 5:42 pm
  • Uh, perhaps his last pitch of the third should have been his last pitch.
Terribly poor effort managing by Francona. He managed like the regular season, where the game is only 1/162 of a much bigger continuum. In the playoffs, you have to cut losses early, no fucking around.

    SF October 4, 2005, 5:43 pm
  • Bradford is in now.

    Kat October 4, 2005, 5:44 pm
  • It’s a long game. And series. If he’s outmanaged by Guillen over however long a haul it is…..good news for Tito’s real estate agent.

    YF October 4, 2005, 5:47 pm
  • I’ve been fairly pissed at Francona the last month or so. He waits too long to replace pitchers and hasn’t been using Papelbaum and Hansen well.

    Kat October 4, 2005, 5:50 pm
  • Sox go down 1-2-3. Again. Contreras’s sick stuff must have YF wondering, “Where the heck was THIS guy?!”

    MJL in L.A. October 4, 2005, 6:09 pm
  • Should it come to it, is Clement likely to start game 5? SFs, would you rather see him or Boomer on 3 days rest? Someone else?

    Spidey October 4, 2005, 6:13 pm
  • Spidey, you know things are tough when you type the words: “I’d rather see Lenny DiNardo get the nod.” There. I said it.

    MJL in L.A. October 4, 2005, 6:15 pm
  • I’m just disgusted at the whole thing. Seems like they don’t care.
Who’s setting the tone for this game? Our pitchers are giving up shit hits, and our batters are swinging at (alternately) the first pitch and ball four.

    Kat October 4, 2005, 6:19 pm
  • 12-to-MF-TWO!!!
Good night all. I’ll see you tomorrow. Time to wallow.

    Kat October 4, 2005, 6:31 pm
  • ChiSox put up a 5-spot in the first, Francona probably just trying to save the bullpen?
Contreras has been dominating since relying on his well-located 4-seamer, and using the split where it was meant to be used: as an out pitch. When he was on the Yanks it was splitter after splitter after splitter, and it got old. Once he had to throw a strike, it would get nailed. Nice work Mel.
Kat: I don’t think you should mind Francona not using Papelbaum. It would be hard for the RS to win using players who don’t exist.

    tom yf October 4, 2005, 6:35 pm
  • =P
I can’t spell for shit and didn’t feel like looking up his name.

    Kat October 4, 2005, 6:47 pm
  • No worries, Kat. Red Sox players who don’t exist can’t possibly play worse than the Red Sox players who do.

    MJL in L.A. October 4, 2005, 6:51 pm
  • Hahahahahaha
    True.
I have to learn how to spell. I’ve been misspelling player’s names since I got on the internet in 91, and just never bothered to put the effort in to correct myself.
It always bites me on the ass.

    Kat October 4, 2005, 6:53 pm
  • Yeah, I can’t complain about Francona’s management today. The whole team is asleep, and unless he had pulled him in the 1st, when the Hose were up 2-0 (talk about a quick hook!) the game was lost. Best not to use valuable parts of the bullpen.

    Earl October 4, 2005, 7:03 pm
  • Please, YF, put up that Angels/Yanks open thread, this one is killing me!!!

    SF October 4, 2005, 7:22 pm
  • hehe don’t sweat it kat, i was just teasin.

    tom yf October 4, 2005, 7:22 pm
  • SF — sorry, was it something I said?!?

    Earl October 4, 2005, 8:08 pm
  • No, it’s what the Sox DID. Let’s move on to bigger and better things!!!

    SF October 4, 2005, 8:29 pm
  • Amen. A pathetic show all around, and hopefully it won’t happen again. The grousing in the Boston papers tomorrow will be unbearable…but a win ties it, on the road. (Ooh, big hit by Cano.)
