Don’t the hours grow shorter as the days go by
You never get to stop and open your eyes
One minute you’re waiting for the sky to fall
The next you’re dazzled by the beauty of it all
– Bruce Cockburn
It is a bit hackneyed to quote somebody else’s lyric poetry when trying to add a personal perspective to an accomplishment as uplifting as Jon Lester’s performance in the face of the trials overcome by the young man, and for using that crutch I apologize. A story that transcends a sport to the become a story of the human being is welcomed by us all.
The Royals return for the second of four at Fenway with Gil Meche coming off a victory in a somewhat shaky outing at home against Detroit. Rookie Justin Masterson did his part in his major-league debut for the Sox, but run support lacked and he wound up with a no decision despite allowing only one run in six innings. Clay Buccholz recorded a no-no in his second outing; Lester got one last night. It’s Masterson with his second start tonight. Likely? No. Curious? Yes. Eyes open.
Lineups to follow, comment away.
post edited for atrocious oversight. Sorry.. I’m running on two hours sleep in the last 36

Who does fact-checking for Yahoo sports, Jayson Blair?!
That’s my fault.. fixing it.
The guy that buried the Red Sox shirt in the new YS is now claiming he also buried a score card from the 2004 ALCS and he’s not telling anyone where he buried it.
Haha, love it, it’s stupid and maybe not true, sure, but I love it.
ag – thanks for doing the gamer bro…you do realize that anything great that happens tonight, like maybe a nice win, means you may have to force yourself to do them till they lose.
Just saying.
The alternative isn’t so pleasant. :)
GOD BLESS COCO!
Nice snag by Pedroia.
Holy Cow. Just enjoying the game, click over to YES, and am more than mildly surprised.
> thanks for doing the gamer bro
My pleasure!
> more than mildly surprised
Me too, except by “mildly” I meant “violently” and by “surprised” I meant “nauseous.”
Justin having a pretty nice night so far, but I think we ARE goign to need more than just 2 runs.
Anyone else having troubel connecting to SOSH?
funny, ag.
But, if it xrays like anything it looked like, no worries – The Yanks just inherited yet another excuse for the year. And, I don’t mean excuse as a snide. Explanation maybe.
Millar..
Yard.
My God, Youk is an amazing fielder.
This offense needs to score some runs for this kid..yet another good young pitching performance from him, and yet another sorry day for the bats to support him.
Come on wood.
If nobody else has seen the video over on Dirt Dogs, do yourself a huge favor, and watch it. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve seen in quite some time. Really. It’s so funny.
All Anons were me. TypeKey forgetting me!
Hey guys, just got home from work. Looks like Masterson is pitching well, and holy crap Moose only lasted .2 innings? Niiiiice.
yes it is, Atheose. Yes it is.
Brad, were you talking about the Joba video? I guess it was a little funny, but kinda amateurish ;-)
Masterson only at 82 pitches after 6? Very, very nice.
Gah. Would have liked to get something from Youk there. Meche’s pitching a pretty good game himself.
91 pitches for Masterson. 6.1 innings, 3H, 3BB, 5K, 0 ER. Great outing.
Please don’t f*ck it up Lopez.
oh yeah, ametuerish for sure. But funny.
Like all other SFs, I enjoy it when things go poorly for the Yankees (though I really don’t like seeing their players get injured, as much as I dislike Jeter). But I have to feel that as low as they sink now, the Yankees are gonna rise up just as high at some point this season.
So I hope the Sox build up a big enough lead in the division that I don’t need to worry when it happens. I’d much rather worry about Tampa getting the wild card and making a run against the Sox in the playoffs — at least that’s novel.
Holy crap, Lopez did his job!
I’d love to see the Rays get the wild card, both to keep the Yankees from getting it and to see their club enjoy a little success. I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for underdog teams, despite the Sox having turned into the Goliath of the league.
And here comes MDC…. crap
Lil Manny!
Woah woah woah, how the hell did they score a run? I didn’t even notice!
Okay I’m pissed now. Masterson’s ERA just doubled.
Walk, groundout moves runner over, RBI single off MDC to answer your question, Atheose.
And yeah, it’s totally 2 a.m. here and I’m watching Gameday.
Come on, Oki.
Oki has loaded the bases and gotten two outs. Papelbon is coming in for 4 outs. I’m sweating.
Phew. Paps comes through.
Papelbon Ks him. Honestly, it’s unfair how much I kind of expected that. Could we score two or three here?
Paps gets the K.
Where are you, Devine?
Luke Scott homers, Bal 12, NYY 2, top 8.
This would be a good time to break out of it, Manny.
Looking at Manny’s stats, what’s amazing is that he’s fallen almost as far as Ortiz has risen — their stats are much closer now than I would’ve expected, given how bad Papi started out.
Halftime, Bos 41, Det 40.
Fnck. Manny Ks for the third time tonight.
Manny hasn’t been the same since that pitch behind the head.
The hard way. Is this the first time Papelbon will try to get a 1-run save since he blew two in a row?
London, IBM.
I think so.
Uno.
For how long, and where are you staying? I haven’t been to London since 1985.
Another K. 2 outs.
Dos.
It’s my first time. Staying at fiancee’s boss’s flat near Hyde Park (Kensington?). Till Monday morning. It’s been fun so far. Westminster Abbey was the sh*t.
Aw man, I wanted Callaspo to be at bat for the final out again.
I hope to be buried there.
And tres! Congratulations to Masterson! The bullpen (barely) got him his first win THIS time.
K! that’s it. Back to 10 over .500. …
Buried in Westminster Abbey, I mean.
I figured you meant the new Yankee Stadium, Bill — it’d be the ultimate curse, right?
Are you getting out of town much? I highly recommend Salisbury and the Abbey. Stunning.
I long to make a joke about that, IBM, but haven’t found the perfect reply yet. Something about you working there as a custodian to earn the privilege maybe…?
I *think* we’ll go to Bath, but not sure yet. Anyone got any other recommendations?
A Westminster custodial job would probably pay more than I make now. But it wouldn’t be as much fun.
And since things are going pretty well with the Sox right now, let me register a small complaint about the typepad-mandated comment-per-page limit — it’s lame and they should nix it.
Other than that, it’s all smiles from me.
What do you do, Bill? (The next reply’ll probably be my last, as I should sleep…)
Bath is interesting. Salisbury is beautiful. Canterbury is beautiful, too. you should be able to take the Rail to either.
(PS Nice one RE: curse, stuck working.)
(PPS: Cockburn (in the post lead-in)…hee hee!)
Im the public information officer for the local prosecutor, after 18 years in newspapers. At the courthouse every day. I love it.
Salisbury has the highest spire in England, and it’s not far from Stonehenge (where the banshees live and they do live well.) Salisbury Abbey architecture is stunning. Well preserved. The local brew is mighty fine, too, if I remember right.
That’s awesome, IBM! I’ll add one more: what does that entail exactly? Looking up info available to the public the prosecutor needs?
Basically. I do a lot of press releases — we have gang issues in Aurora, Elgin and Carpentersville. A lot of gangbangers have moved out to Aurora from Chicago, and the suburban juries bury them, not to mentionm our lawyers. They’re very good. .. I do a couple of newsletters and talk to the press all day. Get the poop on cases and charges. Like today, I found out that a kid from aurora got charged with a misdeemeanor for shitting in a dude’s oven. Shit was takenas evidence. Really. No, um, shit. that’ll never make the papers, but I laughed for an hour.
Hope I get to read your reply tomorrow, Bill, but I really should get to bed. Good night!
Bath is GORGEOUS, visit Stonehenge along the way if you get a chance. My great great great grandfather was the Bishop of Bath, he has a tomb burried in the western-hall of the cathedral there. It’s right across the street from the Roman baths.
My family lives in Ascot, where the racetrack is. I HIGHLY recommend visiting a big racetrack on a Sunday, it’s a very social event to go to and drink and gamble. A lot more fun than in the States.
Oh, that is awesome, IBM. Just awesome! I love getting inside info (especially hilarious inside info) the public doesn’t have access to.
And now good night for real!
Drinking is more fun in Britain.
Adios, amigos.
I imagine it is important to keep a toilet paper trail of the chain of custody when dealing with that kind of evidence.
Bath: highly recommended.
not to toot my own horn but………
i’m officially starting the justin masterson hype machine. get on board now. he’s the next (your favorite pitchers name here)! yeah, he’s only faced 19 and 20 year olds, but that k/bb ratio spells HOFer to me. sure, he’s only pitched at lowell, but the sox are holding him back cause he’s that great.
