Road Warriors? Sox-Jays Friday Night Game Thread

The Red Sox have completed 10% of the season in fine fashion, and if the next 10% has any resemblance to it the Sox will have shown themselves to be the real deal.  If the next 16 games don’t go well, there’s always Roger. Tonight our lads head across the border for a tussle with those upstart Blue Jays, the ones who are, uh, 7-7.  Anyhoo, consider this your game thread.  Crush the Canucks, boys!

  • I’ll be out to dinner for everything after the 2nd inning. Hold down the fort, everyone!

    SF April 21, 2006, 6:27 pm
  • Will do, SF!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 6:39 pm
  • It’s always a bit worrisome when the Sox face a pitcher they’ve never seen before.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:09 pm
  • From the sound of the “Yooooou” cheers, apparently there are a fair number of Sox fans at the game in Toronto.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:10 pm
  • 2nd inning, SF? How do you know the Sox won’t bat around seven times in the 1st? ;^)
    (Two up, two down.)

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:11 pm
  • 1-2-3, 11 pitches.
Burnett has some good speed going.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:14 pm
  • Stats may prove me wrong, but the Red Sox don’t seem to have scored many first inning runs this year. Anyone have a quick link to Stats, Inc.?

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:16 pm
  • Frank Catalanatto is a member of the “Tiny Head Club”. Shane Spencer was a charter member.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:18 pm
  • 1 Jay down, walk to Catalanotto.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:19 pm
  • The Sox haven’t scored many runs this year. Right now they’re at 77 runs, which is 20th in the league, behind such offensive luminaries as the Twins, Pirates and Astros.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:22 pm
  • Come back, Coco…

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:23 pm
  • Beckett just blew a strike by Glaus. Needs one more, though.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:23 pm
  • Beckett gets Glaus on a 3-2 K. 18 pitches.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:25 pm
  • …and there it is! First K of the day for Beckett.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:25 pm
  • OK, time to get on this over-priced goober. Come on, Manny!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:27 pm
  • Manny Ks.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:30 pm
  • This is some serious fireballing. Burnett blows a 97mph fastball by Manny.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:30 pm
  • Nixon single.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • My Man Trot!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:31 pm
  • Come on, Blue – that ball to Varitek was at his ankles.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:32 pm
  • OK, man in scoring position. Cash it in, Tek.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Nixon to second on a wild pitch.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:33 pm
  • Walk to Tek.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • Lets see lots of pitches. Wheeee!!!

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • Good job by Tek. He’s had a weakness for high heat for a while now, so the fact that he layed off two high ones is good news.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • My suggestion to all the Sox: slap it the other way.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:35 pm
  • Mike Lowell’s bat speed is not conducive to facing a guy like Burnett.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:36 pm
  • Not a pretty at-bat from Lowell (K).

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • Do we really have Willie Harris playing center field? Jeez…

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • I didn’t realize how short Willie Harris is — 5’9″.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:38 pm
  • Another borderline call from the ump, giving Burnett the far outside corner again.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:40 pm
  • And burnett strikes out the side. The better news: His pitch count is up to 38.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:41 pm
  • You can’t tell me nine finger Coco doesn’t equal ten finger Willie Harris. At least we made Burnett throw a bunch of pitches, I guess… Still, I get tired of getting guys into scoring position with less than two outs and coming away with nothing because the end of our lineup is an offensive sinkhole.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • Willie Harris?! Are you kidding me?!?!

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:42 pm
  • The bottom of the Sox’ order is like a weak NL club.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:43 pm
  • One down, groundout to Youks.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:43 pm
  • No kidding. I just came back to work and saw two men on with two outs and got excited, obly to have my heart sink when I saw the name at bat.
When four of your nine guys make you shake your head, and two more make you cross your fingers, that’s just not pretty.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • Comebacker to Beckett, 1-3, two out.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:44 pm
  • Superb inning from JB.

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • Nice, quick 1-2-3 inning… Was that like 10 pitches?

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • Groundout to Gonzo (YoLoGoLo infield), quick inning for Beckett, 25 pitches.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • 7 pitch inning. Awesome. Have I professed my non-sexual manlove for Josh Beckett yet this hour?

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:45 pm
  • Damn – off to dinner. The way this game is going it’ll be over long before I get home. Go Sox!!!!

    SF April 21, 2006, 7:46 pm
  • He’s riding high on my man-crush list as well, MM. Right behind Coco and Youk.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:47 pm
  • Gonzalez out 6-3, but at least he saw 6 pitches. If Burnett keeps this stuff up, their best hope is to build the pitch count way up, and then hope the Sox can get into their pen.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:50 pm
  • Chien-Ming Meltdown! Headline, The Bronx: Wang walks two, gives up 2 run single in NY. More to come.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:51 pm
  • Youks K.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:51 pm
  • Such a surprise how inconsistent and mediocre Wang has been. Who ever saw that coming?!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:52 pm
  • Loretta gets a short single.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:53 pm
  • Ortiz HR!

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:53 pm
  • PAPI!!!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:53 pm
  • MR. CLUTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:54 pm
  • It’s not too early to start…
    M V P ! M V P ! M V P !

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:54 pm
  • I LOOOOVE watching the ball on ESPN GameCast sail up up up and away…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:54 pm
  • Total Homers: Julio Franco + Bronson Arroyo = 3
Total Homers: Barry Bonds + Manny Ramirez = ZERO!
    Come on, MANNY!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:55 pm
  • This is the kind of game where we could have just seen all the scoring we’re gonna see…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:56 pm
  • MANNY GOES BACK TO BACK!

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:56 pm
  • First of the year…

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:56 pm
  • Or not. MANNNNNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Back-to-back baby!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • MANNY!
    I so called it.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • We should’ve kicked SF outta here sooner.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • Yet again I make some comment I consider to be sage, and it gets thrown back at me with the next pitch :-p

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:57 pm
  • Trot keeps the mo moving. My Man Trot!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:58 pm
  • We’ll give you a pass on that one, Matty. ;-)
Burnett is looking terrible all of a sudden. Very radical turnaround, after two dominant innings.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:58 pm
  • Oh, I think we’ve gotten to him a little bit folks! Trot with the single!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Is anyone else getting asked to verify about every other post?

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Good inning, and all with two outs, by the way. Good to see Manny get off the schnide.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Inning ovah, 3-0, 63 pitches for Burnett.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 7:59 pm
  • Man, Varitek has not been good this year. At ALL. I’m surprised more ink hasn’t been spilled about that.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:00 pm
  • Pop up in foul territory to Lowell.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:02 pm
  • Oh what a play by Lowell. Knocks it down, throws him out sitting on his rump.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:03 pm
  • I’m gonna have to make sure to watch the SportsDesk highlights tonight…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:04 pm
  • Another quick inning. Man, I love this guy! Srak has a good column on him on ESPN.com today…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:05 pm
  • Groundout to Gonzo. I’m starting to get sold on the value of strong D as an equivalent for scoring runs.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:06 pm
  • Stark, that is…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:06 pm
  • Beckett: 37 pitches through 3 innings.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:06 pm
  • Paul, I think the commenting engine has a timer which asks you to confirm that you’re not a robot, which kicks in if you post quickly in succession.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:07 pm
  • It just seems to have picked up the pace of late, but maybe I’m just posting faster than usual…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:08 pm
  • Hey, how about that, Beckett’s pitching a no-hitter. Boy, he really looks on tonight. What with the no hits by the Jays and all.

    Spidey April 21, 2006, 8:08 pm
  • Good play by the Jays’ second baseman on Lowell, 1 out, none on.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:09 pm
  • Harris Ks again.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • lol, I was gonna go all postal on Spidey til I saw that, oh, it’s Spidey. It doesn’t count if you’re not rooting for it to happen, btw.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:11 pm
  • All those who understand the Sox’ fascination with Alex Cora and Willie Harris raise their hands.
    Thought so.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • Whatsherface, the onfield interviewer for NESN, annoys the heck out of me. Tina. Never adds much, imho.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • Gonzo almost had a nice hit, but Hinske made the grab.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:12 pm
  • Well, a fella’s gotta try, Paul. :)

    Spidey April 21, 2006, 8:13 pm
  • Funny moment from Opening Day, where I saw the Sox play the Rangers. She was out on the field waiting to go live, and Dan Shaughnessy pops out of the Sox dugout, nervoucly walks over and introduces himself. After a few awakward seconds of looking around the field, he scurried back inside.
Either he was looking for someone and they weren’t there, or he totally just wanted to shake hands with what he thought was a hot babe. All the guys we were standing with above the dugout quite enjoyed the show.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:15 pm
  • Well, that was a silly walk…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • 2nd walk to Catalonotto.
    None gone.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:16 pm
  • I was afraid of that.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:17 pm
  • Wells ties it up with the long ball.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:17 pm
  • Walking in front of Vernon Wells = stupid.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • No, Manny’s HR keeps it a 3-2 game…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:18 pm
  • Maybe Beckett hates pitching with more than a 1-run lead… He settled down real fast after that homer…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:21 pm
  • What was I saying, it’s not tied up… 3-2 Sox.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:28 pm
  • I wonder if Burnett was hurt.I just realized he’s not pitching the fifth…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:29 pm
  • Anybody know why Burnett isn’t in there anymore?

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • Paul A and Spidey, what are you doing over here? Come to the Yanks thread!

    NickYF April 21, 2006, 8:37 pm
  • Nothing about it has moved on the AP Wire yet. I imagine our best source of info will be whoeever is watching the game. Anyone?

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:38 pm
  • I’m, um, not a Yanks fan? There might be a Paul who’s a Yanks fan, but it’s not me…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:39 pm
  • oops! Brain fart.

    NickYF April 21, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • TEK!

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Unfortunately I don’t have the game on. I’m watching some playoff hockey. Its… TEK!! Yeah! 4-2, SOX!

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 8:41 pm
  • Now Tek is making me look bad! I just ened to shut up, lol

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:42 pm
  • Paul, you gotta post about how Willie Harris can’t possibly hit a grand slam…

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • I am pulling for a Nashville vs. Ottawa NHL Stanley Cup final. Feel the excitement!!!

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:44 pm
  • Long drive by Lowell, but Hinske makes the grab.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • Or about how Rudy Seanez couldn’t possibly have a good season after the start he’s had…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:45 pm
  • No offense, but I get excited about the NBA and NHL playoffs because it means those seasons are finally nearing the end…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • Willie Harris… Um, why?

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • Willie Harris K #3. Starting to almost feel sorry for him. He has no business playing higher than AAA.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:46 pm
  • I’m with you, Paul, I could not care less about hockey, and barely care about the NBA (whose regular season doesn’t mean squat anymore, with these endless playoffs).

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • Yeah, I don’t think even I can help Willie Harris get a hit, let alone a grand slam. The man hit less than .200 in AAA for goodness’ sake!
(What’s funny about that statement is about how I’m apparently the cure-all to the Sox’ hitting woes — as opposed to, you know, our pretty-damn-good hitting coach.)

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:48 pm
  • yeah, the NBA and NHL do the playoffs all wrong. HALF the league makes it to the playoffs! What’s the point of having such a long season (I know, $$$)

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:49 pm
  • An NFL-style playoff structure would impriove both leagues.

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • I was just amazed watching SportsCenter talking about how teams five games under .500 could be a 7 or 8 seed. Sheesh.
And then there’s the ridiculousness in the NBA that better teams get seeded lower because they didn’t win the division, meaning lower-ranked teams have incentive to LOSE and finish lower so they play the weaker division-winners. Good grief!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:51 pm
  • Man, Beckett is ON! 1-2-3 through the heart of the order…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • I don’t care at all about basketball, but I do enjoy some good playoff hockey. I’m a Washingtonn Capitals fan, and they’re nowhere near the playoffs this season so I probably won’t pay as much attention as I would otherwise.
But nothing beats the Sox. Damn, Beckett is throwing well today.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 8:52 pm
  • exactly. there’s no incentive to do well down the stretch if your team has been good for the first 3/4ths of the season. Give the top two seeds a first-round bye, and it’s a different story.

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:53 pm
  • A-Gone on three strikes.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:53 pm
  • Is alex gonzalez going to get any better at the plate? even a little?

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:55 pm
  • right now a Bellhorn-esque .240 sounds like a wonderful dream for Gonzo

    airk April 21, 2006, 8:56 pm
  • At least he can field, and in his case, I think the trade-off actually is worth it. The black hole we have in center until Coco comes back has just been horrific, however.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:57 pm
  • Black hole on offense, that is, and I suppose on defense, considering how any ball hit close to center has been sucked in by Stern/Mohr…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:58 pm
  • Incidentally, Beckett’s at 70 pitches through 6 and a third… Amazing.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 8:59 pm
  • and right after you say that about defense, Harris makes an awful play on Hillenbrands fly

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:00 pm

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:01 pm

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:03 pm

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:06 pm
  • MANNNY!!!! NUMBER TWO!!!!!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:08 pm

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:26 pm

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:27 pm
  • uhoh

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:28 pm
  • And Beckett’s right back with the K. I bet there’s some issue Nipper’s gonna work with him on, maybe trying to make the perfect pitch with men on, and it leads to homers…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:28 pm
  • Oh crap.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:29 pm

    walein April 21, 2006, 9:30 pm

    walein April 21, 2006, 9:37 pm
  • Wheels are falling off…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:37 pm
  • Suddenly this game is like a flashback to last year’s Sox team.

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • Sure, NOW the Yankee fans show up… Where were you guys when Beckett was tossing zeroes and Manny jacked two HR? ;-)

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • Loretta, Ortiz, MAnny due up in the 9th for the sox

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:38 pm
  • Why was Lyle Overbay stealing?

    walein April 21, 2006, 9:38 pm

  • Francona emerges from his nap

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • Us Yankee fans were delaing with our own private Apocolypse

    walein April 21, 2006, 9:39 pm
  • it was a failed hit and run — the overbay thing

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Timlin’s WHIP has been scary all year — around a 1.6. Can’t do that for too long and not get burned…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • looks like Papelbon coming in

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:40 pm
  • Hindsight is 20/20 but I rally thought this woulda been a good game for Papelbon to go the 2 and 2/3..

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:41 pm
  • so Timlin’s only recorded out was a throw-out by Varitek… *slaps forehead*

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:42 pm
  • Sorry, 1 and 2/3

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:42 pm
  • I assumed the Molina walk was semi-intentional — walk the power hitter, get further down the lineup, create the force at second…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • yiiiiiikes…. that was too close for comfort

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:43 pm
  • Finally out of it!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • great play by Loretta from his knees. tough grounder up the middle.

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:44 pm
  • How has he not won a Gold Glove yet? Or has he?

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:45 pm
  • Let’s go for the Walk-Off Winnah!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • Terry Francona seems to have caught Grady Little disease… Leaving pitchers in too long.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:46 pm
  • Damn. Keep forgetting we’re not in Boston anymore…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:47 pm
  • There was no way to know Beckett was cooked though… Only 80 pitches through 7 innings, and he was dominant in the 7th…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:48 pm
  • yeah, no way to foresee beckett losing it there

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • [Back.]
Loretta gave it a ride, but no dice.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:49 pm
  • Ortiz flies out. Up to Manny.
I really don’t want to go to the bottom of the 9th with a sudden-death situation here.
It’ll be interesting to see how Francona handles a potential extra-innings situation, pitching-wise. This the first of the year, no?

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:51 pm
  • based on recent performance, i’d guess foulke would be the first to get the call… gulp

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:52 pm
  • BJ ryan is cooked after this inning, if it goes on. 29 pitches.

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • Manny flies out, too.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:53 pm
  • Man, this sucks… It’s bad enough to actually watch games like these, but I feel so powerless at work on the GameCast…
At least at home on TV, I can yell and pace…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:55 pm
  • I wonder how long Paps can last in this kind of situation…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 9:56 pm
  • so far a fast inning for papelbon. he could come back in the 10th

    airk April 21, 2006, 9:57 pm
  • Two gone quickly. Good news, maybe he can go two.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:58 pm
  • Is that a “let’s go Red Sox” chant I hear?

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • 12 pitches now, 2-2.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 9:59 pm
  • Fouling ’em off.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Effin’ Frank catalanotto. hate that twerp

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:00 pm
  • Ramirez does a good job of holding Catalonotto to a single.
Here comes Vernon Wells. I don’t like this.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:01 pm
  • Classic frustrated reaction to a pop-out by Vernon Wells! LOL

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • Popot… Let’s get em in the 10th boys!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • I hate typing Catalanotto’s name.
    Inning over. 17 pitches.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:02 pm
  • Wonder if we may see a Wily Mo pinch-hit tonight. They could always use him at bat, then swap him back out for Mohr if worried about his glove…

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • if I’m Tito, papelbon comes back if necessary.

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:03 pm
  • BJ ryan still in! I’m surprised

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:04 pm
  • The top 6 hitters ll have at least 1 hit… When was the last time that’s happened?

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:04 pm
  • no action in either bullpen

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:05 pm
  • Oh, Trot… I know exactly what pitch that was too… Tailing fastball, outside corner, swinging right through it…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:06 pm
  • Or a pinch-hit for Gonzo, bring in Cora…

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:07 pm
  • BS 2nd strike called on Lowell!

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:08 pm
  • that was WAY outside!

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:09 pm
  • That was a horrible strike call by the ump. Outside, low.
    Then Lowell grounds out.
Mohr was lined up to pinch-hit for Harris.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:09 pm
  • i feel like running out for a bottle of Labatt’s just so I can smash it! TAKE THAT CANADA

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • Assuming we get through the 10th, it’ll be:
    Mohr.
    Gonzalez.
    Snow.
Oy. In other words, we’d likely need to get to the 12th to have a chance.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:10 pm
  • yeah, that is a bleak trio of hitters.

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • 1 out, fly out to Manny.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:11 pm
  • Yeah, poor choice to remove Youk… I know we were winning, but aren’t we clear that Youk doesn’t need a defensive replacement?

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:12 pm
  • although, Snow will surely belt a few homers this year, so there’s a glimmer of hope

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:12 pm
  • Seems to me that even if Papelbon gets through this quickly, Francona is going to have to use Foulke (or, GULP, Tavarez) unless he wants to burn Papelbon for the rest of the weekend.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:13 pm
  • Zaun scares me. I don’t like him…

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:14 pm
  • Throw strikes, Paps. Make ’em hit.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:15 pm
  • The Jays are in the same situation with Ryan though. I think you try to win the game in front of you. It doesn’t make sense to hold Paps back for a game that might be a blowout.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:15 pm
  • I agree… Paps looks like he could go another…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:16 pm
  • i agree

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:16 pm
  • 29 pitches for Papelbon.
I dunno… Maybe let him pitch to one hitter in the 11th, then bring on Foulke?
The pinch-hitting situation is pretty tough, too. This is a big test of Tito.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:17 pm
  • Harris is batting? Wow.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:18 pm
  • would’ve been better off trying for a bunt single

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:19 pm
  • My god, Harris made contact.
    But still out.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:19 pm
  • It’s been a long time since we’ve had a lineup this horrible at the bottom…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:20 pm
  • Foulke up in the pen.
    Gonzo flies out to Wells.
    This is a Lost Half-Inning.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:21 pm
  • I was just about to post that, Hudson. Great minds think alike.
    COME ON…..Alex Gonzalez?

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:21 pm
  • Snow walks!

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:22 pm
  • All right, hope!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:22 pm
  • Loretta at the plate. There is (slight) hope.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:22 pm
  • Pop fly to left.
Here you go, Foulkie, your big chance to show what you’ve still got.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:24 pm
  • here we go! buckle your seatbelts

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:25 pm
  • Yikes…

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:27 pm
  • I’ve been worried by these reports that his pain’s coming back… This would indeed be something of a wasted offseason if all those bullpen changes washed out (excepting the Crisp and Beckett pickups of course)…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:28 pm
  • OK one out. that was close.

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • 1 gone. Good job by Foulke stopping that from going for a single.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • Rios pinch hitting. batting ONLY .390

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:29 pm
  • oh man

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Double by Rios (who is now 7-for-10 against Sox pitching this year).

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Shit…

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:30 pm
  • Uh oh.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:31 pm
  • that shouldve been a triple – conservative baserunning right there

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:31 pm
  • A single probably wins it. I have a baaaad feeling about this.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • foulke does not look composed out there

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • Come on, Keith. Lets do this.

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:32 pm
  • One more, Keith. One more…

    mattymatty April 21, 2006, 10:34 pm
  • Fly out, 2 gone, runner to third.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:34 pm
  • k, 1 more out…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:34 pm
  • WOOHOO!! K

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:36 pm
  • Gothim!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:36 pm
  • YES! K!
    Here come Papi and Manny.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:36 pm
  • The Yankees lost.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:38 pm
  • (Gotta root against the Yankees, even though Baltimore is closest to the Sox in the East standings.)

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • (Gotta root against the Yankees, even though Baltimore is closest to the Sox in the East standings.)

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:39 pm
  • Gah. K.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:40 pm
  • Let’s go for the 3-homer game Manny…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:41 pm
  • Manny Ks, too.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:42 pm
  • Or the strikeout… Sure, that’s close…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:42 pm
  • Trot might be able to handle this heat.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:43 pm
  • Walk.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:45 pm
  • Ok, let’s get something done here!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • Wily Mo pena to pinch run for Nixon. uhhhh…

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • Pena… pinchrunning.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:46 pm
  • They say he has speed, and I suppose he can run full-bore without killing himself…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:47 pm
  • Pena allegedly is faster than you’d think. I find it a little hard to believe.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:47 pm
  • OK, pena to 2nd on a PB!!!

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:48 pm
  • Passed ball! Wily to 2nd. What a gift.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:48 pm
  • bastards walking Varitek.

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:49 pm
  • IBB to Tek. It’s all on Lowell now.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:49 pm
  • Lowell showing discipline up there.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:52 pm
  • Pop-up. Sh!t.
Now if Foulke (?) gets through another, we go to Harris/Gonzo/Snow again.
They could pinch-hit Mohr and Cora, but what improvement is that?

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:54 pm
  • All right, so we’ve got Foulke in the bottom of an extra-inning game and the bottom of the order coming up in the top of the next… Yuck.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:55 pm
  • Rudy Seanez warming…

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:56 pm
  • Pena pinch-running instead of pinch-hitting is a definite misuse of his resources…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 10:56 pm
  • Seanez warming as Foulke works.
    Oh, joy.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:57 pm
  • 1 gone (fly to Harris).

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:58 pm
  • does Vernon Wells bat every inning?

    airk April 21, 2006, 10:58 pm
  • C’mon, Foulkie. Get it done.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:59 pm
  • airk: LOL. Sure feels like it.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 10:59 pm
  • Fly to Manny. 2 gone.
Foulke is such a different style of reliever than Papelbon… There is a method to his madness but it’s more nerve-wracking, because he works slowly and they get more (soft) contact.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:00 pm
  • That 2nd ball was a strike for Toronto pitchers.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:01 pm
  • Oh come on, ump. That was as good or better than the strike you just called. Bull.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:02 pm
  • Foulke out, Seanez in.
Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:03 pm
  • Seanez = break out the whisky

    airk April 21, 2006, 11:04 pm
  • Yeah, bring in the guy with the 9.00 ERA.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:05 pm
  • Don’t like that call at ALL…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 11:05 pm
  • Oh heck.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • didn’t see that coming

    airk April 21, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • Foulke came out WHY, exactly?

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • Took all of 2 pitches… Great…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 11:06 pm
  • seanez/tavarez/riske are all busts. this much is already blatantly obvious. the question is what bargaining chips do we have to acquire a quality relief pitcher

    airk April 21, 2006, 11:08 pm
  • Horrible bullpen management… Horrible.

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 11:08 pm
  • Thanks, Timlin. Thanks, Rudy. Thanks, bottom of the order. Thanks, Tito. It’s been real.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:08 pm
  • or do we go to hansen / delcarmern / etc.

    airk April 21, 2006, 11:09 pm
  • WHAT HAPPENED? gamecast is slow . . . i have one strike and a pickoff attempt . . .

    rk April 21, 2006, 11:10 pm
  • Just in time for me to get off work… If this year turns out like last year, we’ll be talking about this game at the end…

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 11:10 pm
  • There might be something left in Tavarez (though I really dislike the guy, and fear him coming into a playoff game, late, clutch situation).

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:11 pm
  • Foulke had two outs, walked a batter on a borderline call; Francona brought in Seanez, who on his second pitch gave up a long double that brough the runner all the way home.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:12 pm
  • Could have gained a game on the Yankees, had 2 pitchers at 4-0. The story would have been Manny’s return… Instead, it’s crappy bullpen and crappy late-innings player management… AGAIN!

    Paul A. April 21, 2006, 11:12 pm
  • that runner being the slow-ass Troy Glaus, adding insult to injury

    airk April 21, 2006, 11:13 pm
  • I think it’s a bit too early to call Tavarez a bust. But, I dunno. When I feel like the game’s already over when Seanez gets brought in…the success Foulke generally has against lefties, I’m not sure if there was any logic to him coming out, unless he was really tired.

    Quo April 21, 2006, 11:13 pm
  • Tito just ran a clinic in how *not* to manage a game from the 8th inning on.

    Hudson April 21, 2006, 11:17 pm
