Robert Merrill: 1917-2004

Yankee fans everywhere mourn the death of Robert Merrill, the Metroplitan Opera stallwart who boomed out our national anthem—with authority and class—at the Stadium for more than three decades, beginning in 1969. He was 87. He will be missed.

  • He was an opera man, so “tragedy” was a daily routine. If anything, we expect he was mortified by Ronan Tynan’s unforgivably bombastic rendition of “God Bless America.”
