Roger and Rogers and Me: Yanks-Jays Gamer X

Roger Clemens makes his first start against Toronto at the Rogers Centre since 2003.  He has had a rough go on the road this season, with a 1-4 record and a 5.90 ERA.  Worse yet, his last outing was a dismal performance against Chicago which certainly was not helped by a botched DP from Cano.  He’s on the mound against Josh Towers.  Pete Abe reports that Godzilla gets the night off due to having sore knees; he also noted the following:

Joba Chamberlain:  may pitch tonight
Jason Giambi: activated off the DL
Brian Bruney: optioned to Scranton
Miguel Cairo: DFA’d

  • Let’s get Towers, he of the 5.17 ERA!
Damon leads off with a single.

  • The Captain swings at a 3-1 pitch and grounds out but at least moves Damon into scoring position with one out. Here comes Bobby.

    Lar August 7, 2007, 7:15 pm
  • Abreu grounds out to the right side of the infield, which moves Damon to third, but there are two outs, so it’s all the same. Let’s go ARod!

    Lar August 7, 2007, 7:16 pm
  • ARod flies out, 3 outs on 17 pitches. The Yanks didn’t do anything with a leadoff single.
Here’s Roger getting paid a million bucks.

    Lar August 7, 2007, 7:18 pm
  • Johnson tries to bunt for a hit, but is out.
Overbay walks on 5 pitches, including 4 straight balls.

    Lar August 7, 2007, 7:22 pm
  • Was that Wells fly ball out to left as deep as Gameday says, Lar?

    Devine August 7, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • Rios and Wells both flied out. Not far from being a HR. Let’s hope Roger has enough in him..
Still, he gets out of the inning only needing 13 pitches. End of 1, no score.

    Lar August 7, 2007, 7:27 pm
  • No offense meant, BTW. It’s just I find Gameday is fond of putting balls that are at, say, the lip of the track in real life up against the wall on the online display.

    Devine August 7, 2007, 7:31 pm
  • Again, with the Yanks with a runner on 2nd with less than two outs, we couldn’t score.
Towers gets through 2 with 36 pitches.

    Lar August 7, 2007, 7:39 pm
  • Roger serving up some very hard hit balls

    mp August 7, 2007, 7:41 pm
  • Oh my god, I just laughed for a full minute.
Toronto is such a bunch of whiny losers.

  • Took a gym break. Wow, even with a DP by the captain they scored 3 runs that inning. Fine, it’s against Towers, but hey, we’ll take it.
    Okay, home time.

    Lar August 7, 2007, 8:10 pm
  • Lar – you missed the Toronto/A-Rod drama.

    AndrewYF August 7, 2007, 8:13 pm
  • how is it that kay and leiter fail to recognize that luis hit stairs dead on the knee yesterday? they’ve been droning on ad nauseum about not hitting a player (a-rod) at the knee.
the two dirty slides by a-rod and jd escalated this thing to a point of silliness.

    sf rod August 7, 2007, 8:25 pm
  • Was Stairs hit intentionally yesterday in the late innings? Seems unlikely.

    Nick-YF August 7, 2007, 8:29 pm
  • you’re right nick. at the time, situationally, it doesn’t seem likely. but for some reason matt is the most pissed off bluejay today.

    sf rod August 7, 2007, 8:36 pm
  • that’s Matt being Matt.

    Nick-YF August 7, 2007, 8:37 pm
  • I was going to make a snarky comment to the effect “But we don’t hit .230 hitters” but apparently Matt Stairs is hitting .286 with 14 homers and a .538 SLG. Where the hell did that come from?
Roger’s looking GREAT so far. If he can give us 6 shutout, he’s earned his million for the night.

    yankeesnj August 7, 2007, 8:43 pm
  • So who’s Roger going to use for target practice when he’s ready to wrap it up for tonight?

    yankeemonkey August 7, 2007, 8:47 pm
  • good question. It’s kind of bizarre that Roger can control his pitch count using such a barbaric tactic.
Pitch 98–“Man, I’m done. Time to scare the living shit out of Reed Johnson.”

    Nick-YF August 7, 2007, 8:54 pm
  • I don’t know if Roger is *quite* as scary as he used to be, he doesn’t throw as hard anymore…Now, if Joba or *gulp* Krazy Kyle goes up and in, *that* would be truly scary.

    yankeemonkey August 7, 2007, 9:00 pm
  • Cano channelling Giambi. 3 walks and a HBP. Unbelievable. YF’ post this morning is perfect timing.

    Nick-YF August 7, 2007, 9:21 pm
  • clemens decided to call it a nite via rios’s spine. then neglects to respond to any of his teammates offering high-fives on the way out.
fire up the jet george. roger needs a couple days with the family.

    sf rod August 7, 2007, 9:28 pm
  • meanwhile, Everyday Brower comes in.

    Nick-YF August 7, 2007, 9:31 pm
  • Ahh, Alex Rios is the sacrificial lamb. Well, he did a good job while he was in there. And while I don’t advocate purposely hitting people, the Jays had it coming.
What I want to know is why the hell was Chamberlain not warming up at the start of the inning. Now Brower walks the next dude, 2 on with no outs. Brilliant.

    yankeemonkey August 7, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • WTF? Now Karstens is throwing???!!!

    yankeemonkey August 7, 2007, 9:32 pm
  • Nice, Yanks up a bunch. Is a 85 mph pitch that much less painful than a 95 mph pitch in general?

    Lar August 7, 2007, 9:39 pm
  • Nice DP now that I see the situation. Can’t let them get back into it, after all!

    Lar August 7, 2007, 9:42 pm
  • I was on gameday – how come the Toronto pitcher didn’t get tossed for hitting Cano?

    rootbeerfloat August 7, 2007, 9:53 pm
  • RBF: probably ump’s discretion. It definitely didn’t look like he hit Cano on purpose.

    yankeemonkey August 7, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • Joba’s final line, 2 IP, 1 hit, 2 walks, 2 K’s. No pressure situation, but still nice.
