Rolling: Pods-Yanks Gamer III

What a difference a couple of superstars makes. After last night’s victory, the Yanks have won 6 straight and 8 of 10. The return of A-Rod, who’s been flat raking, and Posada, have rejuvenated the lineup. Damon is leading the league in hitting, Giambi is back to being one of the best offensive players in the game (!), Matsui is Matsui (though he’ll sit out for a day or two with a sore knee), and even Robinson Cano has started to hit. They’ve come out of this collective slump facing some strong pitching (Oakland in Oakland, Oswalt, Peavy last night). The weak bats of those opponents have made the pitching staff look pretty good. Today, Joba takes the hill, with a pitch count over the century mark. Comment here on that action, or, if you’re so inclined, the Germany-Portugal Euro 08 quarterfinal.

  • YF, For a minute there I thought maybe we had a 10:00 am game today…that would be awesome!
More than anything (during this streak) I am learning to just enjoy the good and not get to crazy when the bad times do come. Bottom line is and I am sure this will be controversial the Yankees do not have enough to beat the Sox in a playoff series. So in my eyes, just sit back enjoy it and let’s see what happens. New stadium, Joba’s in the rotation, the offense is clicking, the ASG…it’s a good time to be a Yankees fan. (Just don’t think about what October can bring)

  • I’m taking a half day to wach Joba get his first win!!! That and to watch ze Germans CRUSH Portugal!!!
Baseball is FUN to watch again! The bullpen was a little scary last night but wins are wins…

  • “What a difference a couple of superstars makes”.
    And Houston and San Diego:)
    Just kidding, YF.

    Brad June 19, 2008, 11:40 am
  • Hey, that’s fair game Brad, particularly after YF qualified Dice-K’s debut last year since it only came against the Royals.
    ;-)

    SF June 19, 2008, 11:55 am
  • I believe that was the same qualifyer used to belittle Jon Lester’s no-hitter in some quarters.

    Paul SF June 19, 2008, 12:12 pm
  • Brad: I think I beat you to the punch with the post: “The weak bats of those opponents have made the pitching staff look pretty good.”
So I qualified it myself. Take that SF! I’m no hypocrite.

  • ARod needed to hit that ball into play that time..

    Lar June 19, 2008, 1:24 pm
  • Men on first and second no outs, and the Yanks don’t score. Grumbles.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 1:27 pm
  • So, we’re fist pumping in the second inning now, huh?

    LocklandSF June 19, 2008, 1:47 pm
  • Checking in intermittently from work. Joba’s line: 3.0, 3, 0, 0, 1, 5 looking pretty darn good on paper.
    Runs pls?

    YF June 19, 2008, 2:07 pm
  • I’ve always liked Tony Clark. Except right now.

    attackgerbil June 19, 2008, 2:15 pm
  • “So, we’re fist pumping in the second inning now, huh?”
How long is this gonna be discussed. These comments are so old at this point. Joba was happy to get out of a jam. Its Joba being Joba. Leave it be. Pitchers on both the yankees, the sox, and basically every team have pitchers who show emotion on the field

    Sam-YF June 19, 2008, 2:27 pm
  • I’m guessing TC god hold of a curve, because I can’t imagine him catching up to Joba’s fastball. Not going to criticize before seeing the sequence, but…..

    YF June 19, 2008, 2:27 pm
  • Every out is important..

    Lar June 19, 2008, 2:48 pm
  • Melky creating a run, creating a tie game, by letting Molina hit a sac fly.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 2:52 pm
  • another great start for Joba. 5.2 IP, 9K, 3BB, 4H, 1 ER.
Too bad we dont have him for the 8th inning….

    Sam-YF June 19, 2008, 2:58 pm
  • Joba comes out, Veras comes in. 100 pitches on the dot. Decent “first” outing, though he walked 3.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:00 pm
  • Jeter leads off the 6th with a single.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:08 pm
  • So does Barrett have no arm, or what? 3 SBs? And it’s not like they’ve got Henderson and Coleman on the basepaths…

    Paul SF June 19, 2008, 3:11 pm
  • and stole second. Let’s go, small ball Yanks!

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:11 pm
  • They were running on the backup Catcher last night too…

    Sam-YF June 19, 2008, 3:12 pm
  • Abreu moves Jeter to third with a groundball. ARod can pretty much do anything and pick up an RBI, a situation he was in in the first inning.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:12 pm
  • Jeter comes in on a single by ARod. Too bad Joba didn’t get that one extra out to be in line for the win. Eh, a win is a win either way!

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:14 pm
  • Banks comes out. Let’s go JGamb?

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:17 pm
  • ARod stealing second. More small ball!

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:18 pm
  • Too bad Giambi strikes out swinging. Still only a base hit away from an insurance run!

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:20 pm
  • I’m with Paul here – why are the Yankees running wild on the bases? I mean, Cabrera had three SBs all year and then stole second AND third? Jeter and A-Rod both have a SB today? What’s going on?
I should ask my girlfriend, actually; she’s a Padres fan.
Sigh. Yanks take the lead – I knew before this series started that they’d sweep it. Padres do NOT have enough offense to even pretend to compete with a Yankees lineup on a hot streak.

    Micah-SF June 19, 2008, 3:21 pm
  • And Posada won’t do it. It’s up to Cano.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:21 pm
  • Update: looks like the most interesting player in soccer is about to get dumped out of euro 08. germany up 2-0 over portugal.
And you think baseball is frustrating?!

    YF June 19, 2008, 3:23 pm
  • Re-Update: Iberians on the make. 2-1.

    YF June 19, 2008, 3:31 pm
  • Veras walking himself into trouble..

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:36 pm
  • But gets out of it. 2-1 after 7.. but who will pitch the 8th?

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:37 pm
  • Molina doubles. The Yanks have two outs to add an insurance run.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:44 pm
  • Damon did not get it done. Let’s go Captain Clutch!

    Lar June 19, 2008, 3:47 pm
  • The Jays/Brewers game has become… interesting.

    Micah-SF June 19, 2008, 3:55 pm
  • some no hit ball going on in milwaukee. heading into the 8th.

    sf rod June 19, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • Jeets walks, but Abrea doesn’t get the insurance run. 3-4-5 up for the Pads in 8th – if only we had Joba out there now!

    Mark (YF) June 19, 2008, 3:56 pm
  • Yeah, so Joba should stay in the bullpen. Heh!
    5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, *9 K*
The Yanks already have their #1. He has the rest of the season to become more efficient.
Meanwhile, why the hell is Girardi trusting Farnsworth here?

    A YF June 19, 2008, 4:00 pm
  • I guess that’s why he trusted Lord Farnswacker!

    A YF June 19, 2008, 4:04 pm
  • Whoa whoa whoa. Farnsworth on his second day in a row nonetheless (historically disastrous) is superb. Gotta give Girardi credit there. Definitely not the move I would have made!

    IronHorse (yf) June 19, 2008, 4:04 pm
  • Farns got the day of work done.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • And Farnsworth gets the job done! I still think it would have been better to have Joba in the 8th there though – probably would have racked up a couple more K’s.

    Mark (YF) June 19, 2008, 4:06 pm
  • C’mon A-Rod. A little insurance here please…

    IronHorse (yf) June 19, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • And now it has stopped being interesting.

    Micah-SF June 19, 2008, 4:07 pm
  • Mo (third straight game pitching) vs. 7-8-9 with the sweep hanging in the balance! Go MO!

    Mark (YF) June 19, 2008, 4:12 pm
  • Mo time!

    Lar June 19, 2008, 4:14 pm
  • Am I losing my effing mind, or is WILSON BETEMIT in at 1st as a defensive sub? The guy is a damn butcher in the field. That’s just completely crazy.

    Mark (YF) June 19, 2008, 4:14 pm
  • Hairston K’s looking – he was definitely looking to walk there.

    Mark (YF) June 19, 2008, 4:16 pm
  • Mark, I hear you. But when your options are Jason Giambi or Wilson Betemit, I’m not sure we could argue the Betemit is worse. But yeah, Giambi would probably be just as good defensively. Which is certatinly saying something in itself.
    Mo Ks the side.
This man is playing at a bizarre inhuman level. Someone should just put him and Tiger Woods in a glass-walled room and let bystanders pay to observe them.

    IronHorse (yf) June 19, 2008, 4:19 pm
  • Mo strikes out the side. Wow.
Mark – I was thinking the same thing when I said that.. haha..

    Lar June 19, 2008, 4:20 pm
  • Mo = Dominant! K’s the side for the second time this series!
Only thing bad about that series is we didn’t get to walk off against Hoffman.

    Mark (YF) June 19, 2008, 4:21 pm
  • I have to say that the Joba move is now unquestionable in my mind. He could blow up the next three outings of course, and 5.2 IP is not exactly length, and the Padres’ offense blows, etc, etc, etc. But even separate from their pitching woes, he would clearly be a starter. With the woes, it shouldn’t even be a lingering question.

    IronHorse (yf) June 19, 2008, 4:21 pm
  • Ya, it’s kind of weird to say that Wang is making Hank look smart by getting injured. Of course I still want Wang to come back, but Joba is looking good – if he’s a #3 starter for the rest of the season (maybe even a #4, or a Rasner) it would be good enough.

    Lar June 19, 2008, 4:24 pm
  • -Wow. Looks like Joba is on his way to being everything we hoped as a starter. Or at least this was yet another step in the right direction.
-Replacing Giambi’s +-1.000 ops in a 1-run game for defensive purposes is bad managing. Torre did that all the time, and it bit him in the ass quite a few times.
-Mo. Wow. I think he’s k’d the side in 2/3 starts. What he’s doing now is simply crazy. The Trevor Hoffman line in the papers the other day was telling. Something like “I just want to go shake his hand. It’s an honor to hear my name in the same sentence.” And that guy is the ALL TIME MLB SAVES LEADER. Un. Real.

    YF June 19, 2008, 4:47 pm
  • PS: Germany wins 3-2, and Ronaldo is out. That’s a real bummer. I was looking forward to watching his play. I didn’t see this game, but the “box score” indicates some of the aggravation of football. Portugal had roughly twice as many shots, twice as many shots on goal, twice as many corners, controlled the ball for longer, and fouled fewer times. They go home.
At least they scored twice. That’s better than SD, and equal to the Yanks. Just imagine if they had A-Rod. (But I guess they kinda do?)
