Saturday Night Special: Yanks-M’s Gamer VI

The Bombers have a gun to the head tonight. This afternoon, the Sox won, and while it’s a bit early for scoreboard watching, falling eight games back is never a good idea, no matter the date. The Yanks put Matt DeSalvo on the hill; he faces Miguel Batista, his victim earlier in the week. Comment on all the action right here.

  • Here’s my wish for tonight: the Gerb has an absolutely spectacular time. He wins the random “seven millionth customer at SafeCo” prize, a grab bag of Mariners paraphenalia, season tickets, $25,000 in cash, and dinner with Mike Hargrove. He meets Joe Torre before the game in a random beer line, shakes his hand, Joe tells him that “he loves the Gerb, he reads the game threads every night when he gets home”. He eats well, dogs and beers on the house (due to the aforementioned prize, of course).
And then the game starts and the Yankees get slaughtered. So, we all win.

  • SF, ha! The joke is on you. I drove back to Portland today, so that means by reverse jinx the Yankees will win! Though that other stuff would have been nice… hmm.
I think I’m 0-3 in my last three visits to Safeco for Yankee games. Grumble.

  • Well, I hope someone offers you free beers and dogs down in Portland, at the very least. Higgins probably has some sort of funky free-range specialty dogs and small-batch private ale that would work.

  • 0-3?! The Gerb is grounded!

    YF May 12, 2007, 8:19 pm
  • Hey Gerb, now thta your back.. what kind of camera did you use for those beautiful game pics? I may have to get myself one.

  • I’ll put some comments regarding the photos on the other thread.

    attackgerbil May 12, 2007, 9:36 pm
  • Game On for the Yanks. I’ll watch the first few batters on GameDay, then I must go to bed.
I hope to be 8 up when I wake up.. but Batista doesn’t fill me with hope.
Sadly, I work tommorrow 8-5. SO I’ll miss Beckett. Phooey.. it’s televised for me too!

    Dionysus May 12, 2007, 10:14 pm
  • Ugh. Jeter with a 2-out single. Is there anything he can’t hit?

    Dionysus May 12, 2007, 10:17 pm
  • Ichiro looks freakin’ scary in his little picture on Gameday. His player photo, y’know? Somethign about the angle his head is tilting, the look in his eyes and his facial hair combine to equal pure terror.
    Or maybe I’m just crazy

    Dionysus May 12, 2007, 10:24 pm
  • Jose Vidro is a bum. Just sayin’.
Also.. where are all the Yankee fans?

    Dionysus May 12, 2007, 10:26 pm
  • Batista walks the leadoff batter (Giambi) because he smells like stinky cheese and hates freedom.
Or maybe is just a bad pitcher.
    Could go either way

    Dionysus May 12, 2007, 10:33 pm
  • Jorge! Minky! 2-0, still none out in the 2nd, and still 2 on. Lots of 2s. Number 2 got a hit last inning. 2s!

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:37 pm
  • former no.22 2nd baseman cano with a….2b???…..nope, a long fly, but both runners advance for damon.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:39 pm
  • Even Meinkawhatsit is teeign off against this sorry excuse for a baseball player. Phooey. I’m off to watch an epsiode of SPorts Night (mmm Sabrina Lloyd) and go to bed, night folks.

    Dionysus May 12, 2007, 10:39 pm
  • but damon does double! 3-0. Jorge stops at third. Ichiro was REALLY shallow, and couldn’t get to it.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:40 pm
  • Abreu single! 4-0. Still 2 on, for no. 2. Can he get hit 2?

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:42 pm
  • YES!!!!! RBI single for the Captain 5-0. Derek up to about .380. Wow. And that wasn’t no BABIP cheapie.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:43 pm
  • Alex sends one to the track; fools Kay into a near homer call, but ichiro tracks it down. Abreu advances.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:45 pm
  • Giambi flies to ichiro. 5 spot for the boys. fun.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:46 pm
  • 1 out 2b for beltre.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:50 pm
  • But no damage, DeSalvo continues to cruise.

    YF May 12, 2007, 10:52 pm
  • As Kay points out, a really cool article on DeSalvo in the Times:
Finally Moose has someone to talk to in the clubhouse!

    yankeemonkey May 12, 2007, 11:03 pm
  • Just when this thing looked like it might be a blow out, Ibanez with a run trip that bounds away from Damon. Feh.

    YF May 12, 2007, 11:09 pm
  • Matt limits the damage though. I really like this kid. I wonder how he will look against an actual major league team though…

    yankeemonkey May 12, 2007, 11:13 pm
  • *after checking schedule*
His next start comes against White Sox. Do they count as major league hitters? I haven’t really followed them this season.

    yankeemonkey May 12, 2007, 11:19 pm
  • Barely, YM. But I don’t think Konerko and Dye will hit a combined .200 for the year.

    YF May 12, 2007, 11:24 pm
  • Hard single for Johjima. He may be a free swinger, but I still like his style. And that name is fun to say.

    YF May 12, 2007, 11:26 pm
  • Hmm. Well, let’s hope they stay frozen at least through next weekend!

    yankeemonkey May 12, 2007, 11:35 pm
  • Kay gets waaaay too excited on foul balls.

    yankeemonkey May 12, 2007, 11:37 pm
  • I really hope Yank bats don’t go to sleep here…Sure they have a 5 run lead, but Vizcaino is lurking. No lead is safe!!!
And Matsui rewards my hope by…grounding out to end the 7th. Bummer.

    yankeemonkey May 13, 2007, 12:01 am
  • everyday mike myers on. 2 down bottom of 7. another good start for the matt (small college avid reader) kid.

    sf rod May 13, 2007, 12:13 am
  • Farnswacker with a remarkably unremarkable 8th.

    yankeemonkey May 13, 2007, 12:38 am
  • Mariano makes it slightly interesting, but Matt does pick up his first win. Good job, kid! It’s so adorable, he jumps over the foul lines on the way in and out of the dugout….

    yankeemonkey May 13, 2007, 1:07 am
  • What’s going on with Cano? I have him on a fantasy team, and I’m debating picking up another 2B and benching Cano til he heats up. His OBP this week was .083. Eesh. Is he getting unlucky or does he look as bad as his recent stats imply?
    Honest question, no snark here.

    Tyrel SF May 13, 2007, 2:16 am
  • no. Cano is the next Rod Carew… haven’t you heard?

    Brad May 13, 2007, 2:23 am
  • Cano is in a bit of a slump. His normal un-disciplineness at the plate has taken a turn for the worse, as pitchers realize that his strike zone is approximately 150% larger than the normal ballplayer.
Once he actually doesn’t swing at pitches 3 feet off the plate, he’ll get back in the swing of things. He certainly has proven he can hit.

  • ^ me

    Andrew May 13, 2007, 9:28 am
  • Tyrel – ya, I have Cano and I just benched him. Though I just unbenched him because Ryan Howard just got put on the DL. It’s been a rough week..

    Lar May 13, 2007, 11:34 am
  • Just picked up Placido Palenco, benching Cano.
