Scherzer to the Nats

7/$210 (deferred so that it’s paid over 14 years). James Shields is the only big name left on the board unless you count trades.

  • Partly an excuse to write this: my wife’s book (middle grade adaptation of Rapunzel, which comes out April 28th) earned a starred review from Kirkus. I’m over the moon.

  • Now if your wife could also pitch for Red Sox …

After Scherzer has signed there’s talke that the Sox might trade for either Strasbrug, Zimmerman or Pfister, as the Nationals supposedly now have a surplus of starting pitchers (don’t we all know there is no such thing?) Probably not going to happen.

If everybody’s on their best behavior we might be pretty good with the current rotations. Probably not going to happen either.

  • Thanks, pbe!

I’d be a little surprised if the Nats traded an SP given they’re so close to many of their pitchers going to free agency. One would think they loaded up to go for it. However, if they could get a really good return on an SP, then of course…

This is probably a good (if not great) team as currently constructed. I mean, the rotation and bullpen are likely to be at least decent, and the lineup is probably going to be good (I’m going to enjoy watching them score some runs, last year was the pits). Seems like a team destined to be in a lot of high-scoring games on both sides, winning and losing 7-6 all the time.
