So Three Billionaires, a Boy Wonder, a Tobacco Spitting Curmudgeon and a Question Mark Walk Into a Mansion …

The Red Sox went out to dinner with Daisuke Matsuzaka Saturday night. No word on the menu or what on earth Theo Epstein, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino, John Henry, Terry Francona and Scott Boras could find to talk about with a 26-year-old who speaks little-to-no English (I have images of Tito spitting tobacco juice on the floor, Werner going on and on about "The Cosby Show" and "Roseanne", Henry mumbling to himself in the corner and Lucchino and Epstein launching veiled barbs at each other between mouthfulls while Boras and Matsuzaka awkwardly try to figure out how many words the other knows in his language) — but who wouldn’t give $51.1 million to be in on that conversation?

At any rate, the last time the Sox sat down with a prospective signee for a late November dinner, that turned out pretty well.

P.S.: This picture makes me think Matsuzaka knows more English than we thought. Does anyone have a definitive reference?

  • I’m perplexed with what we know and don’t know about Matsuzaka’s grasp of the English language.
Many articles quote him and don’t mention a translator, then again, I have seen a few that do mention translation. Can this guy speak and understand English or not, or is it just a case of some sloppy journalism?
