Sox-M’s Gamer II

SF is on the road, and has left it to yours truly to post this, the day’s BoSox game thread. So here it is. Joel Piniero throws for Seattle against that knucklehead Tim Wakefield. Both men are 1-1 with era’s over 5. In other news, the Sox have placed The Boomah on Weight Watchers the DL.

Comment away. Let’s go Ms!

  • this is the weakest offensive line-up I’ve seen from the Sox in years.

  • I was just going to say, what a horrific looking lineup. Francona seems intent on starting Snow when Wakefield pitches, meaning we get Snow, Bard, and now Cora too. I don’t understand why Lorretta gets the day off when we have to field those two plus Gonzalez… I would try to space those out a bit instead of killing our offense in one day. Hopefully this is the day that Manny remembers how to hit, because I don’t think this lineup can endure another 0-4 day from him.

  • Here we go again… This already has the look and smell of last night’s offensive offense.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 1:38 pm
  • How bad do you have to suck as a hitter to hit BEHIND Josh Bard in a lineup? If Alex Gonzalez were in the national league he’d STILL be hitting 9th.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 1:39 pm
  • by the way, matty, I love your nickname for Gonzalez.
With this line-up, I’d seriously consider walking Ortiz and Manny every time. I guess Youk is pretty good, but still…

    NickYF April 15, 2006, 1:40 pm
  • Thanks, Nick. I’m starting a movement. And it better catch on before the trading deadline, because I can’t see him as anything other than a defensive replacement after that. Theres truly no better time to relieve one’s self than when Alex Gonzalez is at the bat.
I bet Theo looked at the Sox lineup and thought to himself, “Oh, my God, what have I done?”

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 1:46 pm
  • From the Gamecast it looks like Pena just crushed that pitch… he’s going to have to stop hitting the ball into the triangle though. It’ll drastically cut down on his homer total if he keeps doing it.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 1:54 pm
  • Have I mentioned how much I love having Josh Bard in the lineup?

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 1:57 pm
  • Josh Bard with an epic at-bat. 12 pitches and a walk – hey, I’ll take it.

    rk April 15, 2006, 1:57 pm
  • Awesome. Bases juiced, no outs, Sox get…..nada.

    YF April 15, 2006, 2:03 pm
  • This is even worse than last night. Thats five runners left on through two innings, including getting nothing out of a bases loaded no out situation. Takes talent to get nothing in a situation like that…
    Man, thats frustrating…

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:04 pm
  • Five men left on through two. It’s pathetic. This is why we shouldn’t have Gonzo-Stern-Cora batting 9-1-2 in the lineup. Ugh.

    Laura April 15, 2006, 2:04 pm
  • I thought you didn’t care about the Red Sox, YF. Nice to have you hear.

  • On the bright side, Piniero has already thrown 53 pitches. We are on pace to get into their bullpen by the fifth.

    Laura April 15, 2006, 2:06 pm
  • Apologies for the double post.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:07 pm
  • Ugh. That sucked.

    Laura April 15, 2006, 2:07 pm
  • We get the bases loaded with no out and don’t score and they score on a damn strikeout. Just terrible… I take back everything nice I ever said about Josh Bard, by the way.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:13 pm
  • Someone archive YF’s posts for the next time some Yankee fan gets on his high horse about people rooting against New York.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 2:14 pm
  • Oh, I care. 3-0 Ms!

    YF April 15, 2006, 2:14 pm
  • The Sox *never* should have traded Doug Mirabelli.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 2:15 pm
  • Thank you, Crazy Carl, for ending that miserable inning.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 2:16 pm
  • I don’t think Mirabelli is the issue. It’d be nice to have him backing Tek up, but to me the issue is a lineup which includes Snow, Cora, Gonzalez, Stern and Bard. Thats four below average hitters, and if you throw Pena in there thats five guys who are pretty likely to make an out.
Gonzalez and Stern both failing to put the ball in play last inning is pretty inexcusible, especially considering that Pineiro hadn’t K’d anyone all game up till that point. Blowing an opportunity like that often ends up costing a team a game. Hopefully it won’t here, but we’re in a much bigger hole than we should be now thanks to their anemic offensive performances.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:22 pm
  • They’re both issues, one offensive, the other defensive.
If Bard had kept a couple of those balls in front of him, that might have been a 1-run inning at most, instead of a 3-run deficit.
And with this light-hitting lineup, the Sox need to prevent every run they can.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 2:42 pm
  • This is a very frustrating game. I guess you have to give Pineiro some credit, though I am loath to do so. The Sox had a few good scoring opportunities in the first few innings, but he was able to get out of them without any damage. Since then, he’s settled down and done a pretty good job in the last few innings.
In 21 plate appearances the Sox have one extra base hit off him.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:47 pm
  • Manny, Youk & Snow: COME ON GUYS! Time to make something (good) happen!

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:51 pm
  • Last year, I’d shrug at the Sox being down 3 runs in the 6th — that was nothin’.
But with Nixon and Crisp out, Manny in a slump, plus Cora, Snow and Bard in the lineup, making up the deficit is a steep hill to climb.
    [Another K for Manny.]
With hope the Sox will at least build Piniero’s pitch count this inning, and they can try their luck with the Seattle pen.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • UGH… Manny… that last pitch was just about off the Gamecast…

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:54 pm
  • 99 pitches, end of inning. A little more patience there would have been a nice thing (and Seattle’s D is not helping, either).

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 2:57 pm
  • I haven’t seen an offense like this in a Boston uniform since the Braves left for Milwaukee. They’re not working the count, they’re swinging at bad pitches… they just look really bad. I’ll be surprised if we score at all today.
Francona just CAN’T put this combination of hitters out there again, I don’t care who the opposing pitcher is.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 2:58 pm
  • OK, who wants to hit? Anyone…? Anyone…? Bueller… ?

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:03 pm
  • You said it mm- 8-9-1-2 of Bard, AGon, Stern and Cora? Wow. Just….wow.

    Mayday Malone April 15, 2006, 3:06 pm
  • Check it out, Wily Mo Pena… On Base Machine!

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 3:08 pm
  • J.J. Putz is warming for the Mariners.
    J.J. Putz??!??

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 3:09 pm
  • Yeah, Bathroom Break!
    Come on, Stern!

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:11 pm
  • Hudson, that can’t possibly be his real name. Who else is warming in the Mariner’s pen? I. P. Freely?

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:12 pm
  • Something about the sight of a guy in scoring position makes our hitters turn into me at the plate.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:16 pm
  • If Michael Hunt comes up to bat for the Mariners, matty, we’ll know there’s something fishy going on.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 3:19 pm
  • decision by consensus:
Should I drop Beltre from my fantasy team?

    NickYF April 15, 2006, 3:22 pm
  • I am following on the net. Can anyone tell me why Francona didn’t pinch hit for Cora? Is Loretta not available or something?
    Bad Terry…

    SF April 15, 2006, 3:27 pm
  • Nick, I would get rid of Beltre for whatever you can get for him, even if its nothing.
I guess we’re not going to score today. Someone named Putz is currently mowing through the heart of our “lineup” right now. This is quite depressing…

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:27 pm
  • I really hope this isn’t the lineup Francona throws at the Yankees.
Cora has absolutely killed our offense today. I have no clue why he’s hitting second. If you don’t have anyone to hit second then move Ortiz and Manny up one each in the lineup. Theres no excuse for setting someone of his limited offensive abilities up for more plate appearances in a game than Manny and Papi.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:31 pm
  • How about NOT PLAYING HIM in the first place, particularly when Tek, Nixon, and Crisp are all not playing? Terrible managing.

    SF April 15, 2006, 3:33 pm
  • Ugh. Three Ks from the “heart” of our lineup. At least Youks had a strong at-bat.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 3:34 pm
  • SF, I mentioned that earlier, but that ship has sailed. He’s already in the lineup, so at least don’t bat him second. Or if you’re just going to give up why not just give Papi and Manny the day off too. We could have a lineup with Dustan Mohr and Rudy Seanez bat third and fourth.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:38 pm
  • Repeat: A three-run complete game ought to be enough for a Wakefield win. He retires 18 of the last 21 batters, but is in line for a loss.

    Hudson April 15, 2006, 3:40 pm
  • Wake has pitched well though. Thats a positive. He’s only given up three so far through 8 and 2/3rds.
I hope we see Lowell, Loretta and Tek this coming inning.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:40 pm
  • This sucks. I saw the first three innings and the last two. What an ugly game for the offense. This is just depressing to watch.

    Laura April 15, 2006, 3:41 pm
  • Hey I think thats Loretta! We have a manager!

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:43 pm
  • Gamecast says Wily Mo just swung at ball four by about a foot. Damn! Come on Tek!

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:48 pm
  • Pop up for Wily Mo. Fly ball to center for Tek. This sucks. and Gonzo is now hitting. Sheesh. Lowell should be hitting right now. Cora is still in the game.

    Laura April 15, 2006, 3:50 pm
  • Looks like Tek got a hold of one… we’ve had pretty piss poor luck – a lot of looooong fly outs to the warning track today.

    mattymatty April 15, 2006, 3:50 pm
  • And I just realized that we could always nickname Wily Mo ‘WiMP’. And we’ve lost. This sucks.

    Laura April 15, 2006, 3:51 pm
  • That was terrible. Just terrible. Excuse me while I go throw something at something.
