Next post: Still Still Getting Used To This Thing
Previous post: Back to Reality
After posting in the previous thread I find there is now a proper gamer. Thanks Gerb. Anybody else out there?
Red Sox make it a point of hitting everything at Denard Span who then catches it.
One out double for Youk. Now get him home!
Papi gets a break with a double to the warning track that seemed catchable. 3-1 Twins. They are hitting Pavana hard now.
This being a new park the outfielders obviously don’t have a feel yet about how the wall plays. Inning over, still 3-1.
Lester’s troubles return. He walks Span who then steals second. With two outs Mauer hits a slow roller through the middle which hits the second base bag. Scutaro has no play and the Twins are leading 4-1.
Mike Cameron just misses the first Target Field home run. Wait, he might have hit the pole. The umpires are talking about it.
Review.
Wow Cameron missed that homerun by about an inch.
At least they reviewed it, cause it was certainly close.
Foul ball. He missed the pole by half an inch.
Amazing that Carl Pavano can stay on the field, much less be effective.
Good play by Youk there.
Pull Lester. He’s got nothin.
That’ll be it for Lester. 107 pitches after 5. Seems like April does not agree with him but he was able to limit the damage and the Red Sox still have a chance.
Nick Punto? Isn’t that supposed to be Beltre’s trademark?
CARL PAVANO INJURY ALERT
And just when the Yankees began to regret not having re-signed him …
Span steals another base, of course …
Atchison does a little better than Ramon Ramirez yesterday. Still 4-1 Twins.
Papi strikes out, for a change.
But Atchison comes back for another inning and gibes up the first Target Field home run to Jason Kubel.
Game over. Quite a disappointing outing.
Oof. V-Mart is going to hit eventually, but 11 stolen bases against 1 caught stealing is not something easily swallowed. Given the struggles of the pitching and Ortiz, I wonder if they’d think about moving Martinez to DH, and swallowing Varitek’s bat and arm for the upgrade to the pitching staff. What other choice do they have?
Meanwhile, Beltre is pulling off the rare feat of a higher average than OBP.
Is there any chance they release Ortiz? 11 Ks in 22 ABs suggests a hitter completely overmatched.
VMart is to blame for the stolen bases, but I don’t think you can say Varitek would be a huge upgrade to the pitching staff.
And Ortiz striking out a lot could also represent someone who is trying too hard because the media is asking the “Is Ortiz done?” question every 10 minutes.
If not, Varitek, then who?
Still – 2009 – Pitchers to Catchers:
Varitek: .256 .324 .406 .730
V-mart: .278 .351 .455 .806
As for Ortiz, I just read a stat that he’s missed 44% of the pitches he’s swung at. That’s not trying too hard. That’s a guy who may legitimately be done. but how ling do they stick with him? They’re obviously a more flexible team if they don’t pencil him into the DH slot every game.
“And Ortiz striking out a lot could also represent someone who is trying too hard because the media is asking the ‘Is Ortiz done?’ question every 10 minutes.”
You’d think that after 7 years dealing with the Boston media, he’d have developed a thicker skin than that.
No gamer?
Sloth just launched one in the first…1-0 Yankees. Man, he made that look REALLY easy…could be a good sign!
Pettitte gets into a little trouble in the 2nd, but in typical Andy fashion he works his way out of it…
1-0 going into the bottom of the 9th. More runs are required. Now.
Cano rips a leadoff double to center to lead off the 2nd…gets to 3rd on a passed ball!!!
…Hip Hip walks…
Then Curtis and Swish K back-to-back…2 outs now for Gardner. Stranding a leadoff double??? Not cool…
There’s now a game post, and Santana is now throwing nothing but strikes.
