Ten Best NY Game Scores Since 2000

Paul’s fine work got me to wondering about the Yanks’ side of things. Thanks to Baseball Reference, I quickly found out the ten best pitching performances by game score for the Bombers since 2000. Here is the list:

  1. Mike Mussina, Sept. 2, 2001 vs. Boston, 9 innings, 1 hit, 13 k’s, 0 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 98
  2. Mike Mussina, Sept. 28, 2001 vs. Balt., 9 innings, 3 hits, 13 k’s, 0 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 94
  3. Mike Mussina, Sept. 24, 2002 vs. TPD, 9 innings, 2 hits, 12 k’s, 2 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 93
  4. Mike Mussina, May 1, 2001 vs. Min., 9 innings, 3 hits, 10 k’s, 0 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 91
  5. Mike Mussina, Aug. 17, 2003 vs. Balt., 9 innings, 3 hits, 9 k’s, 0 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 90
  6. Ted Lilly, June 22, 2002 vs. SDP, 9 innings, 3 hits, 11 k’s, 2 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 90
  7. Randy Johnson, July 26, 2005 vs. 8 innings (CG), 2 hits, 11 k’s, 0 ER, Game Score: 89
  8. Mike Mussina, Aug. 28, 2002 vs. Boston, 3 hits, 9 k’s, 1 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 89
  9. Roger Clemens, June 18, 2003 vs. TPD, 1 hit, 9 k’s, 2 BB, 0 ER, Game Score: 87
  10. David Wells, April 10, 2003 vs. Min., 3 hits, 6 k’s, 0 BB, Game Score: 87

Andy Pettitte and David Wells (again) also pitched games with scores of 87. I’m rushing out so I can’t finish the list.

A couple of things: Mike Mussina has been dominant at times. It’s easy to forget considering that he now maxes out at 87 mph on the fast ball. Also, the best game score for 2007 was Chien-Ming Wang’s May 5th performance against Seattle where he pitched 8 innings of shut-out ball. The score for that game was 78. He also ties Phil Hughes for the second spot (76).

  • Wasn’t that the game where Wang was perfect through 7 or something?
Also, wow, I had to look up who won the Cy Young in 2001, because Mussina had 3 completely dominating starts that year. For the record, it was Clemens, although Moose probably deserved it more. But he came in 5th. Wins are stupid.

  • Ya, it’s too bad Moose still doesn’t have a ring. Maybe this year…
CMW will never score high on this due to obvious reasons. But hey, I’ll take another complete game shut out anyday!

Wait, are the Yankees considering trading Moose to a contender?
    ;-)
