The Long Rivalry: Yanks-Sox Gamer MMXLV

Tonight, if they get the game in, will be the 2,045th meeting between the teams once known as the Boston Americans and Baltimore Orioles.

Some fun totals to whet your whistle for game time:

  • The Yankees lead the overall series 1,112-932 — a .544 winning percentage
  • Take out the Dark Ages of 1920-32, and the Yanks' lead drops to 914-844 (.520).
  • Take out the Dead Ball era, and the Yanks' lead surges to 932-716 (.566).
  • Since Theo Epstein took over as general manager in 2003, the series stands 62-62 in the regular season, 7-7 in the postseason.

Someone will obviously take the lead tonight… if they play (which looks highly doubtful). If they do, or if they don't, comment away!

We'll provide some more fun individual totals tomorrow.

Yeah nettles – saw it (thanks to rbf) and just commented on it in a different thread. It is laughable, unclassy, unjustified (certainly in Jeter’s case), and – when you consider that he named only guys who are either seen as having snubbed the Sox or who are Yankee stars – pretty much a joke.

He certainly called out Jeter, though. He named three names: A-Rod, Manny, & Jeter.
The funny thing is, players from the 40’s and 50’s said the same thing about Rice’s generation of players that Rice said about this current generation of players.
It’s almost comical.
Rice pulled the classic “Kids, what’s the matter with kids today?” routine.

Actually, yeah it’s pretty stupid to include Jeets in with the other two. Why the hell would he mention him?

Billy Wagner will be a curse. You seriously don’t want this guy. And if he starts trotting out in Yanks-Sox games to “Enter Sandman” I will not be responsible for my actions or words.

Yawn. Can we have a bunch of outraged posts the next time Goose Gossage says something about Jonathan Papelbon and this generation of baseball stars? Retired players think the game was better in their day. They’re romanticizing the past, something we all do to some extent. The best thing to do is ignore and move on.

the rice thing is comical. the players of this era have nothing on the inglouious baterds of the disco and coke era. did you know his hof plaque actually has an illustration of grandpa simpson?

Well Paul, if what Goose says about Papelbon in your hypothetical is true it would be sort of different than if it were not, no? What Rice said about Jeter is simply wrong on every count.
And romanticizing the past in general terms is altogether different from calling otut spcific players – which is itself different from calling out only players who irk the organization and fanbase you played for.
I’m not outraged – I’m commenting that I think Rice acted like an ass and that what he said is patently untrue. Not sentimentally gushy about the past mind you though it is also that. But untrue about the present.

IH, you know we would never allow that at Fenway. That song is, and will always be, Mo’s.

Oh, brother. Get over yourselves. And that’s the same thing I’d say to Jim Rice.
Guess & YF, I think you have the appropriate responses.

IBM, my wagner comment is in jest. As for the Rice thing, when Reggie comes out and lambasts today’s PED users, naming only Ortiz, Manny, and and Clemens, I’m sure I’ll marvel at the high road you take.

Pre-game questions:
– How long will this game last, time-wise?
– Who gets plunked first?
– Who dishes out the first plunking?
– Who is the recipient of the retaliation plunking?
– After which plunking do both benches get warned?
– What is Penny’s pitch count after 4 innings?
– What is Pettitte’s pitch count after 4 innings?
– Which YFSF poster makes the first snide remark (once the game starts, that is?)

Wtf? Remdawg is in the booth, we hear him make two comments, and then the NESN sound goes out.

Oh great, and now they’re using the radio guys along with the video feed, and the radio is 5 seconds ahead of the video.

Horse, I’m not real big on Rice’s comment, either. To me, it wasn’t even worthy of a response. But I’m also not so big on the “Oh, my God, how dare he insult Derek Jeter,” stuff, either. There is no one in baseball above reproach. No one. As silly as Rice’s remark was, I have a hard time believing that there isn’t a shred of truth to it.

Oh wow, the way Damon went down and was in pain I was sure he broke something. But he’s up and back in the batter’s box now.

Of course no one is above being critiqued IBM. Jeter gives boring interviews. There. But he wears dreads? Too-baggy a uniform? Cares about his stats more than winning? Used/uses PEDs? You may find it hard to believe that there is no shred of truth in these allegations. I’d suspect you’d be in a tiny minority.
As for the more important thing – the game – I am stuck on Amtrak and can’t watch or even listen for the next hour. Gotta rely on the YSFS commentary and gameday updates on my b-berry…

GREAT stop by Gonz, but he’s unable to get up in time. At least he knocked it down.
Come on Penny, get another GIDP ball like that.

Joe West’s strikezone is an effing joke. The pitches Damon and Matsui struck out on weren’t even close (confirmed by Pitch FX)
Does Penny usually throw this hard or is it a fast gun?

Sorry, Ath. Hopefully I’ll bear good news occasionally. How are you watching? I’m on cable’s Extra Innings.

Broken-bat grounder to 2nd. You can expect the Yanks to score about 5 or 6 off Penny tonight.

Mlb.tv for me. Though I’m leaving to watch Brad Pitt kill gnat-zees. Here’s hoping for an 8 hour game so I can see some when I get back!

Ellsbury works the walk, unlikely he’ll steal the record-tying 54th base with Pettitte on the mound.

Tyler Kepner on WEEI this morning said that the Yankee brass has been very pleasantly surprised at how good the Yankee defense has been this year. Said Cash told him in the spring that he though the defense would be awful.

they should have stopped the game and had posada come out to second and take a few pictures with jacoby.

Just read the Rice article…How does he (a marginal HOF’r) not deserve some sh@t for that comment? Manny, Alex and Jeter lumped together? Take PED’s out of the equation, they are nothing alike. Other than having a Penis what do those 3 have in common baseball wise? Nobody is above criticism but on the baseball field in the context of how the game is played and the example he is for kids Jeter does not deserve or warrant comments like that. As for the whole tired thing, Goose is a loudmouth but that doesn’t excuse Rice’s comments. He chose his words and examples poorly, bottom line. It’s not ok because ____ did it first.

Pettitte w/ a very Dice-K-like first. 0 hits, 1 BB, 1 K 1 run, 26 pitches.
That m,akes a 54-pitch first inning that lasted, what 40 minutes?
We’re in for a long one, boys.

Thanks for the update IBM. By the way,Cash publicly said during spring training “our defense is bad”. It was startlingly blunt and negative a comment before a single game had been played, though I also thought it was going to prove accurate.
John, I literally laughed out loud at the “Other than having a penis…” remark. And suffice it to say I couldn’t agree more.

IH, it would be like _____ saying “Papelbon, K-Rod and Mariano”…Reminds of that song, one of these things is not like the other, one of these things is not the same…
BTW IH, not going to day game, but I will be at September 8th game I believe, Beer up!

Cannot believe some of Joe West’s calls here, way generous outside to lefties. Well, with that run scoring and 2nd and 3rd, 1 out, I’ll switch to videogames for awhile, I think.
Penny sucks.

I’ll be there John – meeting at Mohegan Sun??
If there is a YF who has a chance to run Jeter’s hitting stats over this longest road-trip of the year, I’d love to see it. If not, I’ll do it when I get home. I think he’s literally around .500 for the past week.

Perhaps I was under-selling the number or fns Penny would give up. At any rate, the videogames sound ever better.

Actually John, given what Manny was caught taking this year I’m not even sure the 3 of them have that in common.

Most definitely IH, we’ll talk before hand.
The Yankees are smoking the ball. Nice play by Bay.

Peabody, MA is on ESPN…So far there hasn’t been a real close game yet today. Germany got SMOKED, poor kids.

Sure homer at YS this A-Rod shot. He starts hitting against Boston,no less. No better time, man.

Hopefully, Hurricane Bill will make an appearance within the next half inning to cause this game to be cancelled on the account of rain.

Well, the one thing I was looking forward to about this game — seeing Bowden pitch — has certainly been the vile cherry on this shit sundae of a game.

krueg must be in a bar having a great time with this game right now…,make my weekend,Yankees!

11-1, Jeter hustling down the line to beat out the DP…what a poor example he is. (I know beating a dead horse…)

Somehow I am sure Krueg is finding something to be unhappy about…(for the sake of luck of course)

You have to start feeling bad for this kid, 40+ pitches in this inning, bases loaded…countless runs in. Yikes. Poor kid.

I am going to capitalize on this lop sided game and go to bed early. Thanks for some interesting conversation this evening fellas.

I really like Bowden pitching,I said that already,it’s just that he’s thrown in the fire here and that was too much pressure for young unexperienced players. But Boston has a good arm there.

Well, I hope this bodes well for the Sox bats the rest of the weekend. Maybe they can even wear out some the lesser lights of the Yankees bullpen today.
And is it really still just the 5th inning? My god, these games really do take forever.

Just got home. Wow. Great stuff. Glad the Yanks left their noodle-bats at Oakland Coliseum. Hopefully A-Rod is starting to believe he is a Sox-killer.

Fluck me! I have the Braves in the 15 run pool and earlier this week they scored 15. If nobody else scores 15 I win almost $400. Please Yankees at least score just one more run…

I am increasingly turning my attention to the LAA, who are quietly matching the Yankees’ hot play of the last several weeks. If all continues to go well, it will be a big deal to end the season with a better record than those guys given what a house of horrors LA has been as a venue for the Yanks.

“A lead is a terrible thing to waste”
-National Association for the Advancement of the Pinstripes
Enough of the Bad News Bears routine, OK Yanks??

My fault completely…right after that going to bed comment the wheels started falling off.

Walking in a run (and perhaps TWO if this goes on) when you are leading by such a wide margin is so inexcusable that I can’t find the words to describe it.

Well we haven’t had a bleeding pen for weeks. If it’s going to happen, I guess a game with a double-digit lead is probably the only good time for it…

Can we please take Bruney out? He clearly doesn’t have it tonight. Bring in someone else. Keeping him out there to suck doesn’t serve any purpose other than to frustrate him.

My point,Andrew. And the couple in the stands, she was looking happy and embarassed at the same time, nice though. He gets to get married and watch the game ;) When they were about to kiss there was that loud out that Swoosh made by the sox bullpen.

Meh. Just get a minor miracle win out of Tazawa tomorrow and we can dream about series victory. Good thing the runs don’t carry over.

Pettitte (and Bruney) picked the right game to suck. A-Rod with a monster night. Every Yankee with an RBI – crazy.

OK, add Mitre to the “picked the right game to suck” list.
On a related note, why do the Red Sox and Yankees not know how to play a “normal game”? You know, 9 innings in under 3.5 hours with a score like 5-3?

That would make them normal teams,IH? When they clash things get out of the ordinary. That’s one of the reasons it’s the biggest rivalry ever. Hope we get a good one tomorrow and a CC-like outing Sunday.

Well this is some fucking bullshit. My girlfriend texted me saying “12-4 in the 6th”, which one would assume means my team is winning. But no, she did it backwards. Fucking hell.

As I recall, this is not the first time this has happened to you, Ath. Chick really needs to learn to put “Yankees” or “Red Sox” on the end of a score.

That hurts ath. Better to get no update.
So is Ingl Bast’s as good as most of the reviews say it is?

Penny is having quite the Ponsonian season, isn’t he? And for only $4.5 million more!

Yeah, Inglorious was fantastic. There’s also a hilarious Red Sox/Fenway/Ted Williams reference in the movie too.
Tarantino’s movie are usually hit-or-miss, but this one hits. Tons of suspense, fantastic dialogue, excellent acting, and it’s hilarious. Just a fun movie overall.

That is awesome to hear Ath…LOVE QT! (hetero love, not that there’s anything wrong with that)
I can’t wait to hear if IH watched “Four Rooms” yet.
P.S. Man, I am struggling this morning. WAY too many beers last night. Met a couple cool SF’s last night. Got to play Sinatra on the jukebox after the big win, shots…craziness. It sucks I can’t watch the f-cking game today. I HATE FOX SATURDAY BLACKOUTS!!!

Dude, someone told me to watch Four Rooms the other day. I’m downloading it as we speak.

It is an awesome movie…we were having a conversation on the Yankee Gamer the other day and IH hadn’t seen it either. You are in for a treat my friend!
