The End of the Affair

Manny Ramirez will report March 1, officially two days late, because of a "family matter," already reported as taking care of his recuperating mother (what you want to believe is another matter entirely).

So far, knock on wood, Sox camp has been blessedly drama-free. Matsuzaka seems to be adjusting well. Everyone looks to be in good shape, J.D. Drew held court today and said all the right things. All that’s left is the Schilling negotiation and choosing a closer. It’s almost a boring spring — not that we’re looking to turn Fort Myers into Tampa or anything. ;-)

  • it is my understanding that march 1st is the last day for position players to report. it was something the players argued for during the collective bargaining agreement. where does the “two day’s late” come from?

  • Let me preface this with I don’t really know, but…
I read somewhere that players had to report 33 days before the season starts and that the season officially starts April 2. So the 27th is the last day he can report without fines, or something. But it sounds like Manny has no problem paying a small fine, and the team is unconcerned, so its a non-story.

This picture is not going to put him in Brady or DJ’s party squad anytime soon. Holy cow, now there’s a guy who just doesn’t care about what the ladies think!

  • sf rod, According to the many press reports about this issue, Feb. 27 is the mandatory reporting date, after which a team can fine a player for being late. Something tells me the Sox will not be fining Manny this spring.

  • Gordon Edes reports that Manny is supposed to be at a car show in Atlantic City this weekend. This is allowed by the CBA, but Edes doesn’t mind waiting until about paragraph 12 to note this.

  • Anyone remember what happened last year in Manny’s first spring training game after all the silly hubbub? He hit a single to right on his first pitch.
That kind of sums up Manny in general, I think.

  • Red Sox superstar David Ortiz rolled into camp this morning and sped out this afternoon in the new Toyota Tundra truck that he said team owner John Henry awarded him this morning.
Here’s a pic of Big Papi Driving his new Toyota Tundra.
Meanwhile Manny’s deal: Car auction says he will be there on Saturday instead of camp

  • “FORT MYERS, Fla. — Manny Ramirez, who received permission from the Red Sox to report late to spring training for family reasons, was scheduled to attend a car auction in New Jersey on Saturday, according to the promoter of the auction.”

  • Edes’ lede sure is smug. You’d think he was talking to a blogger or something…

  • Manny is obviously buying a car for his ailing mother.

  • speaking of the end of affairs, we really should get a thread going on this Schilling thing:
I’m sad they’re going about it this way, and really felt they would offer him a one year deal.

  • It’s usually a good idea not to offer an increasingly overweight, aging pitcher a guaranteed deal before he plays out his contract.

    Andrew February 22, 2007, 9:39 am
  • Why do we need a thread to dissect more bluster from “the Big Blowhard himself, the inimitable Schill” as Shaughnessy recently dubbed him?
Isn’t there a 2 week exclusive negotiating window after the WS to try and work this out? If it’s not about the money, what would possibly be the hang-up at that point? Doesn’t the guy understand that given his age and injury history, the team needs to wait until then?
C’mon, Curt, you insufferable egomaniac, give it up!!!

    Andrews February 22, 2007, 9:43 am
  • Probably the same reason we needed a thread to discuss an aging, ever slower, ever worse-armed cry baby outfielder the Yankees chose to not offer contract, no?

    Brad February 22, 2007, 10:00 am
  • Exactly

    Andrews February 22, 2007, 10:13 am
  • well, with the exception that one still contributes a good deal to the team he plays for, and I don’t mean the musical entertainment on the plane ride.
