The Winner of the Waiting for Godot Award is:

Any existentialist worth his salt will tell you that life is waiting. And nausea. Mostly nausea. But also a lot of waiting. And David Ortiz has won an award for waiting…to bat.

The Edgar Martinez Award, awarded to the most outstanding DH in either the AL or the NL, has been been given out each year since 1973. Ortiz has won the award four straight years. That’s an impressive feat if I understood why there was an award for designated hitters. Are there awards for offensive performances at every position? Maybe. And if so, then this award makes sense.

  • Are we sure it’s 4 years in a row? Edgar Martinez was still playing in 2003…
Does seem a little redundant, given that there’s already the Silver Slugger award for DH’s. Which Ortiz has won every year since 03…

  • that’s what the article says.
There’s a Silver Slugger Award for DH’s? That does seem redundant on its own, even without this award.

  • I would assume it was renamed recently using Maritnez’s name since not only was he playing in 2003 but wasnt even playing high school ball yet in 1973.
Also, how could a NL DH win the award? I understand that they can be valuable in the 8-9 games they play at DH each year but still LOL

  • I put the NL as a joke (not a funny one and it wasn’t meant to be laughed at or thought of as generally funny. Just funny to me, as is much of what I write (funny to me that is)).

  • Yeah looks like it was renamed. The four years thing is wrong either way, then…Edgar Martinez won the DH Silver Slugger in 2003.

  • [note: jeter was unavailable for comment, but his pr firm just released this]: …it’s an outrage, an outrage i tell ya…i get screwed again…and why, because i’m forced to play in the field…this just isn’t fair, dammit, it’s just not fair…why should i be penalized just because i wear a glove…
