They’ll Take Manhattan

As Tyler Kepner reports this morning, the Yanks plan on quite the off-season buying spree. The team has every intention of resigning Mo and Jorge, would like to extend Alex, and plans to pick up the option of Bobby Abreu. All those young pitchers leave some room in the books, we suppose, and they’ll need it. Jorge certainly seems to be staying, if his real estate dealings are any indication. Curbed reports the catcher just put down $3.1 million—in cash!—to expand his apartment in a building designed by Robert A. M. Stern on the Upper East Side. I went to school (all twelve grades) right around the corner; it’s a nice place to live, and an easy commute. He can pick up the train to the stadium on the block.

  • I’m sorry if I sound trollish, but how is this new news? We already knew that they would probably resign Mo and Posada (thanks to cheap young pitching freeing up cash).

  • The news to me is that they are picking up Abreu’s option. Almost everyone one had him a goner in May. The season is long.

  • Abreu is a bargain. It really makes sense to pick up the option. The only way you don’t is if you are going after a big name like Jones or Hunter. I believe the option is $16M.

  • If Jorge rides the subway to the Stadium, I’ll start ordering a limo to work. If I can get a black car in my neighborhood that is…

  • I like Abreu but am not huge on him frankly. Best thing about him is that he is a consistent second-half-of-the-season superstar at the plate and that’s pretty good (don’t have time or knowledge on how to capture his career offensive stats broken down by month, but I think his July, August, September stats are probably very strong and stronger than his April-June). I am not confident about his production if he were to be locked into a long-term deal. His option is for how many years??

  • It’s one more year, IH. I think that’s what’s attractive about him given the free agent options. I think he probably has 1-2 more decent years in him.

  • Nick, thanks. One-year…yeah, for sure take the option. He is worth it, especially as he plays for a new contract in NY or elsewhere. Next year will probably be his best given the circumstances.
