Tragedy in Panama

Yankee fans know Mariano Rivera as a religious man, and we can only hope he is finding some comfort in his faith following the accidental death of two relatives at his home in Puerto Caimito. Tom Gordon would take his place as Yankee closer should he not return for the beginning of the ALCS, but Rivera agent Fernando Cuza says “he will be back.” Mentally, there’s no one tougher, so we’re apt to believe him.

A big thumbs down to the New York Times for running on its home page a close-up photograph of Mariano Rivera in tears, presumably at the funeral of two relatives in Panama (the caption is unclear). Doesn’t the man deserve some small bit of privacy? We expect a lot more from the Paper of Record. Booo.
