Uh, Scott, Can I Opt Out Now?

This Yankees’ season has gotten really ugly really fast, and now the tabloids are piling on with off the field stuff. For some reason all I can think of is this

  • Hey wasn’t Jeter performing that night at Scores?

  • Damn….I just spit coffee all over my keyboard. Too damned funny.

  • Gay Rod may be a world class sissy, but dude can pull some world class punanny. Nice.

  • Come on, JP, can you do a little better than that?
Enough with the “Gay Rod” stuff, it’s lame.

    SF May 30, 2007, 10:32 am
  • The guy makes close to thirty million dollars a year.
What would you expect him to pull? :P
Here’s what came to my mind….
    A) This kind of thing should not be a part of what the press get’s involved in. Steve at WasWatching expresses my opinion on this issue nicely. Would they have run the story if it were Farnsworth or Jeter? Obviously, the circumstances are different, and they don’t know ANYTHING about who that woman is or what her business is with ARod. For all they know, it’s ARod’s cousin or something, and they’re trying to start a fire where there may be no spark. It’s none of their business what ARod is doing with whomever. Talk about his May stats all you want, but draw the line between that and his off the field stuff. It’s not necessary, as the Yankee papers have more than enough to write about lately.
    B) Why is ARod not staying with the team? This only solidifies the naysayers (me!)opinion – the guy is leaving in a few months for greener pastures.
    C) If this is true, and IF it is actually something that causes trouble with ARod’s marriage, his wife is going to be filthy, filthy, stinking filthy wealthy.
    D) Again, it’s not our business. NY is chasing this guy out of town with a stick, and when he’s gone and Johnny Third Baser is playing that spot again (Boone) while ARod is playing MVP ball somewhere else, they’re going to regret it.

  • SF – did someone take their morning leak in your oatmeal this morning?
    How about Nice Lay Rod?
There’s this thing called sarcasm…I was going to tell you to look it up, but here, I’ll do the work for you…
Sarcasm from Greek σαρκασμός (sarkasmos), ‘mockery, sarcasm’ is sneering, jesting, or mocking at a person, situation or thing. It is strongly associated with irony, with some definitions classifying it as a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound[1] — stating the opposite of the intended meaning, e.g. using “that’s fantastic” to mean “that’s awful”. It is used mostly in a humorous manner, and is expressed through vocal intonations such as over-emphasizing the actual statement or particular words. Use of sarcasm is sometimes viewed as an expression of concealed anger[2] or annoyance.

  • Gay Rod? Classy.
First a steal of home dooms the night, then A-Rod gets caught cheating. Just keeps getting better and it’s not even June yet.

  • It’s pretty unrealistic to think that the press isn’t going to print stuff like this. The reality is, right or wrong, people love this stuff. They love watching rich good looking athletes and movie stars getting besmirched and falling from grace. Kind of sick, but a fact nonetheless. The press is a business, and it would be bad business to turn this kind of stuff down.

  • Enough with the “Gay Rod” stuff, it’s lame.
    Along with offensive.
Agreed, Brad, that the press should not be delving into this stuff. But this is the New York Post. Not exactly the Times we’re talking about here. The front page of their Web site has three “news” stories circulating — A-Rod, Lindsey Lohan and a car crash. Considering he’s a celebrity, and a married one at that, this seems pretty par for the course. Of course, par is still crappy, but I don’t think A-Rod is being treated unfairly in this case.

    Paul SF May 30, 2007, 11:08 am
  • What I really want to know, without sounding too shallow, is what possesses a man who due to his skill and wealth could land a different piece every night to get married in the first place?

    z118 May 30, 2007, 11:10 am
  • You would think a guy who has finally got himself back in the good graces of “Most” Yankee fans wouldn’t be (A) At a strip club following a loss and (B) Leaving the strip club with a hot chick that’s not his wife.

    Triskaidekaphobia May 30, 2007, 11:12 am
  • Not to play devil’s advocate, Trisk, but what, exactly does that have to do with his on field performance? You really can’t believe that good looking millionaires with free time wouldn’t frequent strip clubs and/or want to take home the talent, can you?
I got news for you, there are Yankees (and Red Sox and Devil Rays and normal people) that do the exact same thing as ARod…it’s just that (a) not all of them have the cash at their disposal that ARod does and (b) they’re not in the public eye like he is.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 11:16 am
  • Zero. And trust me I know he is not alone. A friend of mine used to DJ at a local strip club and we would see Jetes and Jorge in there at least once a week and this is back in 97, 98, 99. Problem being this, not everyone judges a player based on what he does between the white lines. I am a big A-Rod fan and this really wont change my opinion of him, but for the casual fan it certainly might. For a man/player so concerened with his public image and so insecure this was a blunder.

    Triskaidekaphobia May 30, 2007, 11:38 am
  • Actually, I think this speaks volumes about ARod’s insecurities. Usually, a man cheats on his wife because of his insecurities. He wants to be loved by everyone, including hot women in Toronto.
There’s also the argument to be made that he will actually look HUMAN in the eyes of some casual male fans…and there are female fans out there that think they have a shot to hit the “ARod Lottery” now. Sure it will strike a sour note with some…but so will going 0-4 with 3 K’s in the playoffs. At least he can control who he sleeps with. He cannot control who strikes him out or how the fans react to that.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 11:47 am
  • Again, none of you know who that woman is or what her business is with ARod. It’s not like this picture was taken through the window while the man was hard at it. They’re walking. In public. Not one of us was there for it, so really, not one of us really know what went on. Speculating is nice when we’re talking about late June trades or the weather, but not a man’s marriage. This woman could be family or any other million people that ARod has contact with and IS NOT sleeping with.

    Regular_Brad. May 30, 2007, 12:03 pm
  • True, but I seriously doubt that anything we say on this site is going to affect ARod’s marriage. What conclusion do you expect people to draw when it’s reported that they went to dinner together, then hit a strip club and then went back to his hotel and went up the elevator together?
Maybe ARod and his wife have a deal ala Andrei Kirilenko?? Maybe Mrs. ARod knows? Maybe she doesn’t care as long as he comes home at the end of the road trip and she gets to spend her fair share of the quarter-billion? This is all stuff we don’t know.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 12:09 pm
  • Do some people take their female family memebers to strip clubs?
Maybe its just me… I will never go to a strip club with a woman unless I think there’s a reasonable chance I will some day have sex with her.

    z118 May 30, 2007, 12:10 pm
  • oh man, if that was the case, he has the absolute best deal (and wife) in the history of mankind.

    Regular_Brad. May 30, 2007, 12:10 pm
  • Do some people take their female family memebers to strip clubs?
I wouldn’t think so, but then again, a TON of stuff happens everyday that I would think should not happen.

    Regular_Brad. May 30, 2007, 12:13 pm
  • RB – Google Andrei Kirilenko and see what his wife does for him…and she’s a world class Russian Supermodel. I think if more women were like AK47’s wife, there would definitely be less divorce in this world. Also, we’d have to reclassify what “cheating” actually is.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 12:16 pm
  • Brad, I thought the same thing when the Post story said A-Rod went to dinner and the club with the woman and two other men. But then they left the strip club alone and went to a hotel and into an elevator together. Let’s put it this way: Either he’s cheating or he’s incomprehensibly stupid. Maybe his wife’s cool with it, but if she’s like most normal wives — European supermodels don’t count in that category — she’s not. And A-Rod would know she’s not. And he should then be taking care not to put himself in those types of situations.
So not much sympathy from this end, regardless of who the woman is and whatever his intentions with her are.

    Paul SF May 30, 2007, 12:38 pm
  • The other question that begs answer is how many wealthy, good looking athletes can resist the attention of hot young women looking to give it up? The only thing I’d say to ARod is that he has money to be a little more discreet, so use it. The paparazzi is just looking for stuff like this and if you are out in public with a hot woman, they will put you on the front page of their rag. Discretion is the better part of valor.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 12:44 pm
  • The NY Post clearly wants A-Rod to implode because it’s so damn good for sales. The guy is probably the best player in the game but we all know he’s been susceptible to letting things get in his head. I’m pretty sure this will qualify as “a distraction,” to use a sports cliche. And not just for A-Rod, either, but for the whole club.
So much for his great season.
What utter B.S. to follow the guy….

    MJL in L.A. May 30, 2007, 12:46 pm
  • What utter B.S. to follow the guy….
Any more BS than to follow and take pics of Derek Jeter with his many hunnies and Paul LoDuca during his troubles? This is nothing new for the NY tabs. I’m not sure why this is suddenly the most awful thing ever.

    Paul SF May 30, 2007, 12:57 pm
  • I don’t think ARod is having a great season. He had a phenomenal month of April and a crappy May. Over the last month, he’s only hitting .235 5 10. He’s having a good season, all told…but not a great one as of May 30th.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 1:03 pm
  • Of course you’re right, Paul. It’s nothing new for the tabs. I guess I’m so chagrined because I can easily see this causing A-Rod, and by extension the Yankess, to continue their downward spiral.
And as a Sox fan and a lover of the rivalry, I’m getting kind of…I dunno…bored?

    MJL in L.A. May 30, 2007, 1:07 pm
  • This Sox fan isn’t bored. I’m loving it!

    crabby May 30, 2007, 1:16 pm
  • There is no way to get bored here. Success is fleeting and the season can turn on a dime. If it were September 1st and we had this lead, I’d be a little more optimistic. But it’s May 30th. We still have 4 months of baseball to play. Anything can happen.

    jp-sf May 30, 2007, 1:22 pm
  • maybe a-rod was just pushing her out of the way of an oncomming vehicle. and then that vehicle entered the hotel lobby.
had it been papi that got caught, the headline would have read, “Papi Helps Struggling Cosmotolgy Student”. that’s just the way things are going this year.

  • …that woman is remarkably unattractive. I find it hard to believe that she was the best Canada had to offer…

    desturbd1 May 30, 2007, 4:21 pm
  • d1 – I disagree…she’s built exactly like my fiancee. Nice toned arms, pretty face, athletic build. She doesn’t look froofy…

  • Remember when Wade Boggs got caught cheating and then cried on 20/20 or some other show? That was the beginning of the end for Wade in Boston.
