Vouched For

If he were a teammate, how would he handle Ramírez’s quirks and antics?

"Very easy," he said. "Thirty-five, 120 every year. I’ll take it every day. A lot of superstars have some gimmicks. I’m a goofy guy and I have some [expletive] that comes with me, you know? I judge Manny on two things. No. 1: 7:05 [p.m.]. Every night he’s ready to go. And secondly, he’s probably the hardest-working player I’ve ever been around. He keeps it a big secret. He keeps it away from you guys."

That’s A-Rod, someone who knows hard work, on Manny Ramirez.  From today’s Globe.

  • Who knew that A-Rod and Manny were close friends?

  • Who knew that Manny keeps secrets from the press?

  • Perhaps the problem comes when Manny is ready at 7:05 and the game was at 1:30!

  • Another secret:

  • Ouch, Rodriguez is putting the kiss of death on my man Manny.
I’m a big Ramirez fan but being vouched for by A-Rod is like being called a great composer by John Tesh.

  • There’s a lot of meat in that article. Good read.

  • Hudson, I agree with you to a point in that it won’t matter what ARod would say about Manny, or Manny would say about ARod, or either of them about anyone else. They are premiere right-handed hitters of the total history of the game, and yet get shit on day-in, day-out. Maybe that was your point and I missed it. I probably sound like I’m blowing sunshine up someone’s something something, but how can anyone not be impressed by what these two men, still with (hopefully) many years to play, have brought to the game of baseball? When we mock, we are mocking men of epic talent.

  • Much love from A-Rod, but he ignores the main complaint — that he sometimes excuses himself from the game — are his teammates right that he checked out for a month at the end of the last season? If so, that’s the opposite of being ready every day.
I’m not looking forward to Wake tomorrow. He’s got to get his work in too, but this is a time for the hitters to get their timing down, not to go whaling at 65 mph knuckleballs. Whether they hammer him, he shuts them down, or something in between, it’s just not what they need right now.

  • another secret: Manny only read the first 200 pages of Finnegan’s Wake and lied about reading the whole thing.

  • If any of you guys read Rob Bradford’s blog, he just put up a pretty good comparison between Manny and Ted Williams. It’s a nice read, a little eye-opener.
Are the Sox following the regular pitching schedule, with Papelbon following Wake? If so, that should be fun.

  • Despite the “lovable moron” image of Manny promoted by the media, Manny is actually quite the Renaissance man.
For instance, I heard that Manny works out with Yoga in the offseason.
I can just see Manny in tights doing the Sun Salutation poses in a room full of Yoga chicks.

  • mmm. Yoga chicks.

  • “Another secret:
    Manny speaks english very well.”
Why on earth is that a secret even along sarcastic lines given that he was raised in NYC?
That’s like saying ‘Another secret: walein speaks english really well’
“I’m a big Ramirez fan but being vouched for by A-Rod is like being called a great composer by John Tesh.”
If you’re gonna try out your stand-up material here you should at least come up with an apt analogy. A-Rod, relative to the history of baseball between the lines, does not occupy the same space that John Tesh does relative to the history or recorded music.
    Weak effort.

  • LOL, Gerbil took my comment seriously and LP took it as stand up comedy. I must be doing something right.

  • Supposedly A-Rod and Manny worked out together in the off season
