Wake at the Jake: Sox-Indians Gamer II

Manny did it again last night, standing and staring as a sharply hit baseball flew high in the air and landed well into the stands in left field at the Jake, dashing the hopes of vengeful Indians fans, many of whom had apparently stayed home last night in order to let a large number of Sox fans witness the comeback in person.  By the end of the game the Jake resembled Fenway West, or at least they resembled one small section of the bleachers at Fenway where people paint their faces, rip their shirts off and wing them around their head, and give everyone watching ESPN full knowledge that they’ve had about six beers more than anyone their size should probably have ingested.  I have a feeling that mothers all across Brockton and Southie were appalled.

But about baseball: the rotation for the Sox is lined up such that on consecutive nights we see Jon Lester and Tim Wakefield, meaning that one can tune in about 90 minutes after the game started and possibly catch the bottom of the second inning.  Things are going to have to change if I am going to follow the action in contests started by these guys; they are both excruciating to watch.  The Indians send out Paul Byrd, who tonight won’t have to think about the distraction of being recently exposed as an HGH user.  That is, until the shirtless hordes with red "B"s painted on their foreheads start yelling.

Use this as your gamer for tonight’s action.  Lineups after the jump, in which you will notice that Jed Lowrie is making his Major League debut.

  • That Paul Byrd. He’s so guile.

    Lar April 15, 2008, 6:01 pm
  • Whats this Jake place you mention? :p

    TJ April 15, 2008, 6:11 pm
  • Wow no real power there 6-9, although Lowrie has superior power for a middle infielder type, surprised to see him playing 3rd wasn’t his arm the big concern for him being a shortstop?

    Bob April 15, 2008, 6:11 pm
  • I think Francona would have been wiser to put Pedroia 6th and Ellsbury second….

    TJ April 15, 2008, 6:12 pm
  • Do you consider Pedroia/Crisp have power? Not to flame, but what happened to this lineup? Ells batting sixth does wonders for his fantasy value though..

    Lar April 15, 2008, 6:13 pm
  • Unless Papi is back to being Papi, this is one of the worst offensive lineups I’ve seen the Sox roll out in a long time. Let’s hope the knuckleball is on tonight.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 6:13 pm
  • I dont think you need as strong an arm at 3rd as you would at SS…. the big thing there is the arm strenth to get it to 1st when deep in the hole…. generally at third your not usually in the hole.

    TJ April 15, 2008, 6:15 pm
  • No I don’t consider them having power, although Dustin has more power than you would expect from a player his size. Lowrie put up some pretty big power numbers in college, and has good power for a middle infielder although well below average for a third baseman

    Bob April 15, 2008, 6:17 pm
  • 1. DiceK is a pretty slow worker, too (especially when he’s giving up a zillion walks). The first couple innings of his last outing were interminable.
    2. Any chance of midges this time of year?

    Hudson April 15, 2008, 6:26 pm
  • I like watching Dice, pace notwithstanding, just because throws about 18 different pitches (or pitches that do 18 different thigns). So that’s at least interesting. Plus he’s obviously a pretty good pitcher.
Wake is brutal to watch, to me it’s like sitting next to a live hand grenade waiting for the “boom”. Lester is just not a good pitcher yet so watching him doesn’t offer much in the way of optimism, plus you add in the lack of control thing, the pace of the game slows down, blech.

    SF April 15, 2008, 6:29 pm
  • Wakefield last year five times went at least seven innings, giving up zero runs, good for second in the league.
He also allowed six runs or more seven times. That crazy knuckleball.

    Paul SF April 15, 2008, 6:54 pm
  • Unless Papi is back to being Papi, this is one of the worst offensive lineups I’ve seen the Sox roll out in a long time. Let’s hope the knuckleball is on tonight.
If you consider a year or two a long time. We did not long ago run out lineups with Alex Gonzalez, Mark Loretta and Doug Mirabelli in there at the same time. I would prefer none of those to the bottom three in there tonight. Crisp-Cora-Mirabelli in May of last year was pretty terrible. Cora-Pena-Mirabelli.
Interleague play presents all sorts of suck: Hinske-Cora-Tavarez.
So, yeah. Needless to say, I disagree with the hyperbole about this being the worst lineup we’ve seen in some time. Cash is not good offensively, but neither was Mirabelli, and Lugo this year is already much better than Lugo last year, and Lowrie is highly likely to be better offensively than Alex Cora.

  • Noooooo. Epic fail on MLB.tv! I cant connect

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:09 pm
  • Quick inning for both sides as I finally get MLB.tv working

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:17 pm
  • Manny could easily had a walk there if not for the ball just happening to hit the nub of his bat as he pulled away twice.
Byrd gets another K on Youk. This game doesnt bode well…

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:26 pm
  • Not much count working goin’ on. Not much of anything really for the Sox offense.
Can’t we just have ONE stress free win this season? Please?

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:27 pm
  • Paul – yeah, you got me, there was definitely some hyperbole in there. In my defense, though, I would point to the qualification I made about Papi – if he’s still a gigantic black hole in the 3 spot, it is a pretty terrible lineup, because at least with those other lineups you’re bringing up we actually had Papi being Papi most of the time (as well as, say, Lowell in the lineup). No, the bottom 3 isn’t quite as bad as some of the trios we’ve run out there in the past (although unless Lowrie looks good right away, it could be close), but they’re not significantly better either. And this is the way I was looking at the top six:
    1. Crisp – might get on base once or twice and steal, but not really a threat to do more than single unless he gets lucky on a chopper down the line.
    2. Pedroia – Solid as usual, though he hasn’t been hitting great.
    3. Papi – if he’s still slumping, as the first-inning GIDP suggests he is, has the potential to erase any gains from the top two.
    4. Manny – Manny being Manny, still awesome. One of the two dangerous hitters in this lineup.
    5. Youkilis – the other one. Fittingly, he and Manny both struck out in the top of the second.
    6. Ellsbury – I love Jacoby, but right now he’s still figuring things out (especially in regard to inside fastballs) and doesn’t have the power to be much more than a table-setter for the (pretty atrocious) 7-8-9 guys.
What I don’t see this lineup as having is a good chance to put together a really long inning – I think we’re going to be scratching any runs we get tonight onto the board one at a time. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Regardless, I should’ve just said “worst lineup we’ve run out this year”.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:28 pm
  • I hope Jacoby figures out the inside fastball. At least how to reliably foul it off. Otherwise his career will eb very very short indeed.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:30 pm
  • Lowell woulda had that.
    Youk woulda had it

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:31 pm
  • i put Ellsbury’s hitting at .250 on his not playing everyday, he cant get into a groove.

    TJ April 15, 2008, 7:31 pm
  • I agree, TJ. A decision on CF needs to be made. This is not good for his development.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:32 pm
  • Uh oh. WP – npot even Dougie woulda stopped that one. Come on Wake… retire this guy.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:35 pm
  • Wow. Got him on one crazy knucklestrike.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:36 pm
  • Well, at least the knuckleball seems to be working tonight (hopefully it won’t STOP working in the middle of the game). Probably for the best that I’m watching this on Gameday though – I love Timmy, I love his undying loyalty to the Red Sox, but watching him pitch flat-out terrifies me. Every single pitch, even if they end up swinging and missing by two feet, feels like it’s going to go 500 feet.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • Lugo! Earn that paycheck.. or at least a small small portion of it

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:38 pm
  • Just trying to make me feel bad for saying Jed should play SS and Julio should sit.

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 7:39 pm
  • Lowrie’s first AB!
    And he takes a strike.
    Fouls one away.
    Takes a ball. 1-2.
    Another one, high. 2-2.
Lowrie swings through a ncie pitch and strikes out. Thats ok kid. It was only your first AB.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Why can’t this team hit Paul Byrd? What in Mr. Junkball Steroid’s repertoire is so difficult to hit? Ugh.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Holy crap that sucked. Amazing Defense by Cleveland

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:42 pm
  • Look, Kevin, grounding into double plays is bad. Doing it on the first pitch is really bad. Don’t do that again.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:43 pm
  • It was a pretty imprezssive DP, Micah. But yeah… swingign at the first pitch, especially when you suck, is bad.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:45 pm
  • Ok, 3-1. Here comes a Wake Walk.
    and so it is.
    So it begins.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:46 pm
  • And a Wake Stolen Base. I am officially “bleh” on this inning.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:48 pm
  • ick. Stop calling him “Goo”
    HOLY COW! Amazing!

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:49 pm
  • WHAT?! Hahahahaha. Pickoff by Timmy!

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:49 pm
  • Another Walk. Ugh ugh ugh. Just case Franklin got erased doesnt mean Im happy.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:50 pm
  • And the walks were the 8 and 9 hitters, too. Ugh. What’s the record for walks by starting pitchers on three consecutive nights? :P

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:52 pm
  • I’m not likign the Cleveland annoucners. Their idea of a joke is “Youkilis is just hoping Wakefield doesn’t throw him a knuckleball”

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:53 pm
  • Well, to be fair, only the one guy seemed to think he was beign funny. His partner seemed rather contemptous.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:54 pm
  • At least it’s not Joe Morgan, Dio.
Single puts runners on the corners. Urgh. Very glad I am not watching him pitch to Hafner live, that guy scares me.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 7:54 pm
  • God, Wake is hard to “watch” – I’m only listening but it’s still nauseating.

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 7:56 pm
  • I’ve got some cleaning to do regardless of how this inning goes, so I’ll be gone soon…

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:57 pm
  • Wake gets him!

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 7:58 pm
  • And Wake gets out of it after terrifying every Red Sox fan remotely following the game.
Holy shit. Speaking of my previous question about walks – how many full counts have we seen the past couple of days? God, this pitching staff is painful to watch right now. And we get to play the Yankees the next two days, too.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 8:00 pm
  • Aack! Lsot the feed as Byrd gets 0-2 on Dustin. He’s reallyd oign well at gettign ahead of batters and keeping his PC down

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 8:03 pm
  • Byrd is throwing 83-85. He has five strikeouts, no walks, and isn’t even at 50 pitches yet. Am I missing something? Is there an elaborate system of mirrors helping him here? What is going on?

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 8:04 pm
  • Papi got a hit!!

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 8:05 pm

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 8:19 pm

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 8:19 pm

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 8:24 pm
  • Gameday (which I use to keep an eye on PCs) is stuck on Lowrie’s at bat (the first pitch too!) but I’m PRETTY sure Wake and Byrd’s pitch coutns are jsut about identical so far. Surprisingly so.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 8:26 pm

    DP, pretty pretty please?

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 8:31 pm

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • what is wrong with Wake??
Nothing. This IS Wake. Didn’t you read my game thread?!?!

    SF April 15, 2008, 8:33 pm
  • Two walks load the bases with one out. And Wake’s almost at 90 pitches.
I really didn’t think six innings was too much to ask from one person in three days. I guess it is.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 8:36 pm
  • And there’s the two-run single. GOD DAMMIT.

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 8:40 pm
  • One batter too late Wake.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 8:42 pm
  • Well, another deficit. Commonplace this year. This rotation needs to do much better. Sick of the 5 inning start already.

    SF April 15, 2008, 8:42 pm
  • Two runs in five innings isn’t terrible, but it’s the pitch count and the fact that this start is going to tax the bullpen AGAIN that gets me a bit concerned. Can we get get a couple of consecutive seven inning starts? What’s the over/under on this happening this year, ever?

    SF April 15, 2008, 8:46 pm
  • double pump this.

    sf rod April 15, 2008, 8:47 pm

    6th foul of the AB.

I wish there was a way we could PH Drew for Lugo, but I cant figure it out with defensive alignments. At least not without emptying the bench entirely.
    I’m ascared.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2008, 9:58 pm

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2008, 10:24 pm
  • 1 for 4 with 3 RBI’s ain’t bad for a ML debut.

    Atheose April 15, 2008, 10:24 pm
  • OK. Take a breath.
    Two-run cushion.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2008, 10:25 pm

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 10:28 pm
  • Okajima > Hafner

    Atheose April 15, 2008, 10:28 pm

    Atheose April 15, 2008, 10:30 pm
  • Unreal stat of the night: 20 combined LOBs.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2008, 10:31 pm
  • Ath –
Yes, he was quite a local star about 4 years ago.

    rootbeerfloat April 15, 2008, 10:31 pm

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 10:33 pm
  • He took it away from a fan. HAHAHAH!!!!!

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2008, 10:34 pm
Just filthy pitching from Okajima and a great catch from Ellsbury. Not such a disaster after all, tonight!
Now let’s go take two more in New York!

    Micah-SF April 15, 2008, 10:36 pm
  • McNeal, are you obsessed with that LOB stat :p

  • were you left on base a lot in little league?

    TJ April 15, 2008, 10:52 pm
  • WHat a nice night for the Farm. Youk, Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Lowrie all have huge nights.
Only Lil Manny suffered, but I blame Tito mor than him for that whole thing.

    Dionysus April 15, 2008, 10:56 pm
  • No. I never got on base.

    I'mBillMcNeal April 15, 2008, 11:12 pm
  • Boston’s only pinch homer last season was by Kielty in the World Series. … I’m just parroting Joe C’s trivia.
This is cool. Also cool is that Game 5 of the ALCS through Game 4 of the WS marked Boston’s only winning streak of more than five games last year. Saving your best baseball for the postseason = a good idea.

    Paul SF April 15, 2008, 11:18 pm
  • Well, definitely a bad call there as the replay showed Melky was safe. Tough night for the umps, apparently – this is the first inning I’m catching on TV.
