We Salute You, Mariano: Yanks-Sox Gamer III

To a career well-played and a baseball life well-lived. Hope the Sox fans get a chance to cheer him, but also that the Sox aren’t down a run or three at the time. The Sox have won five of the six series with the Yanks (including all 3 at Yankee Stadium), but have not swept a series against them this season. Buchholz tries to provide that sweep while Nova tries to deny it.

To you, Mr. Rivera…won’t miss trying to come back against you, but will miss YOU. Comment away.

  • There’s every chance, of course, that the Sox will face Rivera in October, but this last “for sure” matchup (with so little on the line for the Sox) is making me more wistful than I’d have thought. Less charitable note: a Sox victory today officially eliminates the Yanks from the division race.

Only if they trade him to Oakland next week.

  • The Rangers are 2-10 in September and are losing to the A’s mid-way through today’s game. They then play 7 vs. Tampa Bay and KC. I’m not thrilled about the Yanks’ prospects but the daily dread of inevitable losses while a once-comfortable lead slips away in September is a different kind of fan-torture altogether. As for the Yankees, a fenway sweep today might not put a nail in the coffin, but it would be a pretty good-sized tack.
