While You Were Out(raged)

As we were busy washing away the bitter tears following the TOTALLY INSANE MVP voting (I mean, seriously, Justin Morneau?!?), two free-agent centerfielders became wealthy beyond our wildest dreams. Rich Lederer at Baseball Analysts calls Juan Pierre one of baseball’s most over-rated players, but that didn’t stop the Dodgers from giving him a 5 year, $45 million contract. Not to be outdone, the Angels have inked Gary Matthews Jr. to a 5 year, $50 million deal. Maybe this is some weird LA competition—we overspent more than you! Certainly, Johnny Damon’s deal is looking a lot better right now, and if the Sox are serious about J.D. Drew, well, John Henry better talk to his broker.

PS: Was that MVP voting done on Diebold machines? Not right. Just not right.

  • if drew can wait until lee has signed, he and his agent… who is his agent again?… should rake in major bank.
will theo epsteinbrenner think it is worth the asking price?
my guess is that theo puts on a turtleneck and goes for it.

  • This is all just insane. Really.
    This market is FUBAR.

  • This market is FUBAR.
Agreed, Lockland, but it’s nothing that the resultant fire sale and mass GM execution in two or three seasons won’t fix while providing bloodletting for the horde. “Are You Not Entertained?!”

  • Rising tide. Won’t someone please think of the journeyman? Maybe Bubba will get paid now.

  • Actually, at what point do the signings actually begin to hurt Drew’s position. Yes, he’s “worth” more than Pierre or Matthews, but as the number of bidders for his services drops, so does his leverage at the bargaining table. But I’m guessing that’s not how Boras sees things.

  • which bubba? because i was weeping for (relatively) poor bubba crosby earlier… he signed with the reds for a mere $400,000.00.

  • YFIB: I didn’t know that. 400k is a rounding error on the contracts coming out now.

  • attackgerbil, it was an early signing, one of the first i saw and it flew low on the radar. but yeah.

  • hey, yankee fans… how would you feel if ca$hman got nick johnson back in ‘stripes?
…i think that IF this is legit, they should try to do it.

  • YF: regarding insane voting, I tuned into Dan Patrick briefly while on my way to get gasoline. He talked with Joe Cowley, who tried to defend his position that he could vote Morneau, Dye, Santana, Ortiz and Thomas all as being ahead of Jeter in value to their own team. I may be wrong on the order and even the players, but I’m pretty close to what he said I think. He also voted AJ Pierzynski ninth but omitted Joe Mauer. I realize this is picking on one guy, but COME ON.
Two guys on the Twins are MVPs over one guy on the Yanks? Mauer isn’t worthy of top ten consideration? AJ is?
He’s only one voter. I’ve already stated that there are several guys worthy of MVEEP over Jeter that I would not argue with. What a mess.

  • YFIB: at the deficit of really not looking into the numbers, I would tentatively say, YES.

  • duncan for johnson? oh, dear god… that would keep the lineup ridiculously solid 1 through 9. i don’t know how accurate this is, but i did read about the sheffield trade on that site a couple of hours before i saw anything anywhere else… but this is likely from a different source.

  • Yeah, Drew’s gonna get $60M at this rate — for which I say, “Pass.” I’ll take my chances with The (40-Homer, 40-Error)Adventures of Wily Mo Pena…

  • I just saw on ESPN that A’s SS Bubba Crosby has a fractured spine, and my not make spring training. This could make Lugo more expensive as well. Of course that would require Beane to open that checkbook, so nevermind. Sorry to hear that about him though because I like him.

  • my = may not…

  • And, I agree about Drew, Paul. I happen to be of the ilk that if Willy Mo plays everyday, he’s going to get much better.

  • Brad, just for accuracy, that’s Bobby, not Bubba. Babalu. And Bobby’s pissed, because the docs got his diagnosis wrong.

    attackgerbil November 22, 2006, 7:15 pm
  • He played six games with a BROKEN BACK?? Crap, that’s tough.

    attackgerbil November 22, 2006, 7:18 pm
  • The Yanks should never have let Johnson go. Bring him back, I say. And since we have third base covered for the next five years, I don’t think we’ll miss Duncan…
