Who Needs Greenies?

Hoorah! Baseball’s back, and what a spectacular Opening Day power barrage for a welcome. Dingers from nearly all the big boys, with one notable exception: A-Rod (slam), Papi, Vlad, Pujols (2), Rolen (slam), Wright, Howard, Piazza, Matsui, Thome, Thomas…. The best were at their best.

  • The superstars got theirs, but the homer that brought the biggest smile to my face was Lowell’s. How sweet would it be if this guy’s back? While the performances of Ortiz and Schilling rightly dominated the highlight reels, it was Lowell’s bomb and Crisp’s 9th-inning Randy Moss impersonation that give us a hint of just how good this team could be. Over/under on Craig Hansen getting a crack at the closer job? I’m gonna go with May 15, on a lark.

  • I think Hansen stays in the minors at least until July. But yr right MJL in LA, I was happily surprised by Lowel’s bomb. I was at the Sox preseason game in Philly last Saturday and Lowell hit one there too. I think he’s gonna be OK this season.

  • I am not on the bandwagon yet. Lowell’s first couple of at-bats were weak, so how can we know from such a small sample? Not knocking the dinger, since it’s clearly a good thing, but it might be a tad premature to read anything into it. I remember in the 1990s Kal Daniels had like 6 home runs in the first week of the season, boosted his draft value in our fantasy league (for some reason we traditionally drafted after the first few days of the season) and ended up skunking his owner.

  • I agree, SF. Its no sure thing. But its a good sign. Much better for him to be hitting homers than for him to be K’ing over and over.
