Winner’s (and Loser’s) Spoils

While the Red Sox take home about $19M in post-season money and the Yankees get $1.6M (a single playoff share should buy Joba a nice supply of bugspray or, at the least, a new game hat), we’re happy to know that an epic collapse doesn’t leave those hard-working ballplayers from Queens empty-handed.  Shea’s players will split a little over a half-mill for their efforts (or lack thereof?).

Well done, Metropolitans!

  • The Mets can send me $20 of that share, to countervail the trauma of attending Game 162. Considering the circumstances, I could probably ask for more, but I just want justice.

  • Why do non-playoff teams receive playoff shares?

  • because they really need the additional $9411.

  • I was surprised (even after following baseball intently for three+ decades) to find out that second place teams get “playoff” shares. It’s pocket change to everyone but probably the guys making the minimum and basically a testament to the power of the MLBPA to extract money from Ownership, not much else.
